As of today, Walmart starts to roll out sales of iPhone 3G at its stores. Rumors have been around for quite a while that Walmart would sell a special 4GB veresion of iPhone 3G at only USD$99. Walmart already knocked down such rumor two days ago.
Walmart now offers the 8GB iPhone 3G for $197 and the 16GB model for $297, including a 2-years service contact with AT&T. The price is only USD$2 off as that offered by AT&T.
The Walmart partnership is really great for Apple. With Walmart’s 2500 outlets, this adds a big distribution channel for Apple. Let’s do a simple Maths. Consider each Walmart store sells only 50 iPhones a month, that will add up a total of 1.5 million iPhone sales a year. It’s really a nice number an d quite probably this is a lower estimate of the sales number.
Walmart, however, is not the company offering the lowest price of iPhone 3G. Best Buy is now running a special promotion during the holiday season ((till Jan 3, 2009). The 8GB model of iPhone 3G now only carries a price tag of USD$189.99. And the 16GB model is now sold at USD$289.99. Both are with the same 2-years service contract with AT&T.
