iPhone Nano Rumor and its Concept Photo

by Simon Ng on December 24, 2008

It’s just about two weeks before Apple is on stage at Macworld 2009 and probably shows off some of its newest products. Before the show, the iPhone Nano rumor is back again and still spreading out across the blogsphere.

Earlier, MacRumors revealed the case manufacturer XSKN added an iPhone Nano category on its website. You may not heard of XSKN, but it has a reputation of releasing information about new cases before Apple announces iPhone 3G. So, it seems there is a chance the rumor comes true. And today, MacRumor again posted a so-called concept photo of iPhone Nano, which is submitted anonymously.

Is it real or fake? Personally, I think it’s quite likely it’s a fake one. And, I believe Apple will not waste time to create another phone that just scale down in size. Yes, size does matter. But think about how you use iPhone. It’s not just a phone to make and receive call solely. Think how much time you spend using it to read email and browse the web with Safari. It’s a small tablet computer in your pocket. The current screen size is absolutely well-thought and about right for viewing photos & web browsing.

A reduced screen size (say, 2.5inches) for iPhone Nano doesn’t make sense. First, some iPhone users already complain the existing virtual keyboard. A reduce in screen size means a smaller virtual keyboard that is even less convenient to type. Second, it’s less useful as a web tablet for internet browsing. And finally, don’t forget iPhone is now a game platform. How can we play awesome games on a smaller screen?

For me, I really don’t have any expectation to see the debut of iPhone Nano. The size of iPhone 3G is already perfect for me. But it doesn’t mean I do not have any expectation. I want to have even thinner iPhone with less weight. And, I want the iPhone with cheaper price ($100 lower). And in terms of function, I hope Apple will listen to our iPhone Wish List.

What do you think about iPhone Nano? Are you expecting one?
