iPhone Jailbreak for Beginner #2: Capture Video on iPhone

by Simon Ng on December 18, 2008

Back to jailbreak for beginner, this is part 2 of the iPhone Jailbreak for Beginner series.

In part 1, I have walked you through Cydia and covered the details on how to download 3rd-party applications. I hope you’re already enjoying Cydia. What’s the first application you download from Cydia?

Cycoder Adds Video Capturing to iPhone

For me, Cycorder is definitely the first application to download and I highly recommend every jailbreak user to put this application on your iPhone. (Disclaimer: I do not have any connection with the author of Cycorder but really love the application.)

For those who haven’t heard of Cycorder, Cycorder lets capture video using iPhone’s built-in camera. That’s really cool. Cycorder is not new to long-time jailbreak user. It’s been released since Aug and I had put up a post about Cycorder at that time. For jailbreak beginner, you may refer to the post of “Turn your iPhone into Video Camera with Cycorder” for installation procedures and detailed coverage.

iPhone Video Recorder also add video capability to iPhone but it’s not free

Cycorder is not the only application to add video capture capability to iPhone. iPhone Video Recorder, developed by Dream Catcher is another video capturing application you may consider. Dream Catcher is the first comer of iPhone Video Capture application and has been released the application to iPhone since 1.x firmware.

Same as Cycorder, iPhone Video Recorder can record both audio and video to compressed MPEG4 format. In mid-Nov, Dream Catcher released iPhone Video Recorder v3.0. The new version adds:

  1. Real time MOV-format Recording
  2. Huge Improvement in Video quality
  3. Spy-mode Recording (Record video even when iPhone Screen is turned off)

Compared with Cycoder, iPhone Video Recorder comes with more options (e.g. video mode, audio recording quality) to configure. And, it lets you directly upload the video to YouTube or send it via email.

iPhone Video Recorder is available via Cydia. To download, please add iPhone Video Recorder source “http://www.iphonevideorecorder.com” to your Cydia source, and install it.

iPhone Video Recorder is not a free product. It offers a trial version that allows you record video for 30 times. And, it costs you USD$19.95 to upgrade to the full version.

Which one should you head for?

Both applications are awesome and power your iPhone with video capturing feature. But considered the price, the *free* Cycorder is definitely the top choice.
