One of our readers, Carl, raised a question after successfully jailbreak the iPhone: What should I do after jailbreak? It’s probably a typical question for any iPhone jailbreak beginner. Thanks Carl for raising this question and I’d like to share my answer with all readers.
Before responding to the question, I’d like to ask you a question. Why do you consider to jailbreak your iPhone? There should be some benefits that make you take the action to jailbreak. Remember even QuickPwn & PwnageTool are awesome softwares for jailbreak, the software is not 100% tested on all iPhones distributed in all countries. You’re baring a certain level of risk that your iPhone may be brick, though the chance is low. So, do you know what you can get after jailbreak?
Someone may equal jailbreak to unlock. Let me stress again. Jailbreak and unlock are two different stuffs. Jailbreak your iPhone means you are allowed to install 3rd party applications on iPhone. For unlock, it refers to the process to open up your iPhone to accept all carriers. They’re totally different.
Jailbreak does offer quite a number of benefits for each iPhone user. One great feature is you can install a Video Camera application to capture video on iPhone. And, if you’re bored with simple theme of iPhone, you can install a theme manager (i.e. WinterBoard) to switch to different kinds of themes. I’m not going to cover all the great things about jailbreak here again. You can read this post about the top 5 reasons to jailbreak iPhone for details.
Once you know the motivation behind iPhone jailbreak, you should know what to do next. But the remaining question is “How”? Say, how do you use WinterBoard? How do you use Cydia and add other source repository? How do you use SSH to copy file to/from iPhone?
These may be part of the questions you come across when first start using the jailbreak iPhone. Thanks for some of the readers’ suggestions and questions. I’ll write up a series of articles for Jailbreak Beginner that try to answer each possible questions some of you may have.
The first post for jailbreak beginner will come up very soon. So, stay tuned.
What do you do next after jailbreak your iPhone? Leave me comment and share it with other readers.

I used my iPhone to jailbreak however I updated my iPhone because of personal choice. I figured my iPhone would go back just as before. I lost a few apps and my wallpaper would not change. I had to do a full restore. I’ve noticed other people have ran into the same problem? How do you prevent this from happening again?
Hello, I am looking for information that I can’t find anywhere. maybe you can point me in the right direction.
I have jailbroken my 3G iphone and I can access the file structure through Finder on my computer. By deep searching through the folder structure I finally found where photos are stored and I can copy these from the iphone to my desktop by dragging and dropping. BUT these are only the photos that I have taken with the inbuilt camera. (they are stored in root\private\var\mobile\Media\DCIM\100APPLE\ )
I have also a lot of photos that I have synched through iphoto and itunes. I placed these on the iphone to show family etc. BUT i wanted to copy these onto a family members laptop but, whilst I get access to the file structure, I can’t find these photos anywhere in the file structure.
My two questions are:
1. can I access them on the iphone and copy to another computer?
2. has someone published any instructions on where different items are stored on the iphone folder structure?
Hi there…… I have a iphone 8gb and now I have some isssue with it…… my phone keeps hanging and auto reboot when I trying to use it……. what had happen to the phone?? is there any idea to solve it????
@Daniel, I encountered your issue very very long time ago. At that time, I completely restore the iPhone and jailbroke it again. And, this resolves the issue. I have no ideas what the root cause is. But this just works for me.
Thx for your concerned Simon….. but I tried to restore the phone…… it gives me error and cant restore it…… I have tried many version of firmware…… it just cant work…. I am currently using 1.1.2 firmware…… help pls…. thx…..
@Daniel, which guide are you using? I suggest you to use redsn0w and jailbreak your iPhone. Here is the latest guide.
@Simon, I am currently using firmware 1.1.2. Is my problem due to uncomplete jail break or the firmware itself? Cause I cant even restore to other version of firmware. Thx.
@Daniel, what’s your problem? Are you using redsn0w for the jailbreak?
actually I did not jailbreak it yet…… the phone hang after reboot when restoring…… and itune gives me error……. I dunno how to solve it…. thx……
@Daniel, what’s the error? What version of iTunes are you using? If you’re not using the latest version, I suggest you upgrade your iTunes first.
itune 8.2…… error 16xx and <99 error…… conclusion is cant restore……. thx…..

I jailbreakededed my 32Gb 3GS Friday, having owned it since day 1 in June. I’m still kicking myself for not doing it sooner!
aside from the GUI tweaks I’ve implemented (5 columns FTW) I’d say my favorite improvement would have to be the Backgrounder app. now I can use my radio apps to stream new death metal in the background while I peruse google maps for work, whereas before the music would stop as soon as I exited the app.
can’t wait till payday comes so I can get some good stuff!
@social parasite, cool! Are you twitter user? If you use Twitter, you should also check out Twidget for jailbroken iPhone. It’s a great app!
