I have received a number of emails about when the jailbreak guide for firmware 2.2 on iPhone 3G (for Windows) will be available. Understand that you’re awaiting the upgrade, however, I suggest you read through the following carefully before jailbreaking iPhone 3G on Windows for firmware 2.2.
By the time I wrote this post, QuickPwn is the only tool available on Windows to jailbreak iPhone 3G. But take note before you consider to use it to jailbreak.
As mentioned in earlier post, the current version of QuickPwn can jailbreak iPhone 3G but the jailbreak may potentially impact any future unlock of iPhone 3G. Quote from my original post,
The new version of QuickPwn or PwnageTool will NOT unlock your iPhone 3G. iPhone Dev Team is still in process to develop a solution for unlock. And, if you’re using a locked version iPhone 3G and want to unlock in future, please do NOT use QuickPwn and do not use the official IPSW or iTunes update process.
So, here are the rules:
- For those who are using an iPhone 3G which is locked to a particular carrier and you want to have it unlock in future. Please DO NOT USE QuickPwn to jailbreak. If you really have certain need to jailbreak, please use PwnageTool to jailbreak. You can find the jailbreak guide here. But it’s for Mac only.
- For those who have an unlocked iPhone 3G (e.g. those sold in Hong Kong). Okay, as the iPhone 3G is already unlocked. You are free to use QuickPwn to jailbreak your iPhone.
- You own a locked version of iPhone 3G but you’re care about the unlock in future. Okay, you can go ahead to jailbreak.
- And, for those who are using some SIM-card based solutions to unlock iPhone 3G (e.g. TurboSIM), please hold off the jailbreak. There are issues reported by other readers that the iPhone is locked again after upgrade.
Have you made up your mind? Okay, here is jailbreak guide for iPhone 3G. Feel free to leave me comment if you have anything unclear.

Bough my legal phone in Thailand. Worked great until I upgraded 2.2. Phone has been locked since September and is un usable !!! Very frustrating. Nice one “Apple” If only Bill Gates invented it, it would be open to the world. Could you imagine if Microsoft only let pre-selected users officially deal in MS…… he’s be working till the day he dies….
Rgds An Extremely disgruntled user.
P.S. This is the first and last time I buy “ANYTHING” from Apple.
Love your weblog. I have bookmarked it!
Hello there. I own an Unlocked iPhone 3G 16Gbs and i need to Jail break it. It has the 2.1 firmware on it. I’m not gonna upgrade to the 2.2 since i’m afraid it would lock it. I was wondering if there is a possible way to Jail break it without getting it locked.
Will using iPhone1%2C2_2.1_5F136_Restore.ipsw and the QuickPwn 2.1 Jail Break my phone and keep it Unlocked ?
Thanks in Advance.
Babemagnet, I understand your concern of unlock after upgrade. You mentioned it’s unlocked version of iPhone 3G. Is it an official unlocked version?
If it’s an official unlock version, you do not need to worry about upgrading to iPhone 2.2. You can follow the QuickPwn guide to upgrade. But you have to very careful. The iPhone should be an “Official” unlock version. You can check out this post about how you can identify official unlock.
However, if you’re still worry about firmware 2.2 upgrade, you can just follow this guide to jailbreak firmware 2.1.
I bought a iPhone 3G from VIVO in Brazil, it came locked to other providers but VIVO unlocked it for and I staterd using it with TIM, AMAZONIA CELULAR, CLARO perfectly well. It was 2.0.4 after unlocking became 2.1 that’ts when I found out CYDIA and QUICKPWN. What made me to install lots and lots of free APP’s… but happiness came to an end when I upgraded to 2.2 firmware.
Since that I cannot jailbrake my iPhone 3G, I have downloaded the quickpwn 2.2 because of this JAILBREAK GUIDE you posted but it doesn’t work fine. When the screen for the 5 steps comes the process stops (and for God, I’ve been wainting for over 4 hours, and it never finishes, 4 times so far).
In addition I had to restore my iPhone with iTunes, thaks the Lord, at least this worked out on my iPhone.
But I’m not happy I need (desire, wish) Cydia back in / on my iPhone. How can I get it?
Any clue?? Please help me!!!
can anyone tell me how to download free applications?
i just bought my iphone 3g and i don’t know where and how to download applications without paying…
btw….what do you mean by jailbreaking the iphone?
thanks
help me!!
i have a locked iphone 3g and i accidentally updated it to 2.2 and then used quickpwn.
i was hoping to unlock it in the future but now i know its impossible.
is there any way that i can go back to the 2.1 software????
please i really need to unlock this iphone..
I was so nervous about jailbreaking my phone, but after 3 days, I can’t be more excited. The biggest problem………..playing with my phone too much, spending too much time adding the awesome apps/themes/ringtones.
Thanks
@maria, to restore back to firmware 2.1, you’ll need to download the old version of firmware and restore it via iTunes. For firmware download links, you can refer to this post. For your information, the current version of QuickPwn is not ready to unlock iPhone. You’ll have to wait for a few days. iPhone Dev Team will release an updated version of software to unlock iPhone 3G. You may check out this post for further details.
@Bill, that’s really great you find the guide useful. Jailbreak is so fun. I’m always so glad to hear you and other readers who manage to jailbreak the iPhone on their own. Again, thanks for leaving me comment.
@thisisme_08,
With iPhone 3G, you can download free iPhone application by using App Store. Regarding jailbreak, you can check out this post (Why Jailbreak?) to find out more information about jailbreak.

Andrew, you may need to download and install .NET framework first before you can launch QuickPwn. You can download it at the following URL:

Hello, im after some advice. I’ve recently bought a locked (I assume) iphone from O2 (Current version is 2.2). I am interested in jailbreaking my phone to take advantage of the extra apps and visual tweaks i can make. Im not interested in changing my carrier or anything like that. Is it worth jailbreaking? is there any risks? and what is the best program to use for my situation? Thanks in advance for your help!
I upgraded my iphone 2G ver 1.1.3 to 2.2 in 10 mins on a winXP PC!!
1. Ensured that I had, backed up my data from within itunes, had the correct 2.2 ipsw file, BL files- 3.9 & 4.6, quickpwn 2.2, iliberty+ in one folder on the desktop & had installed itunes 8.0.2
2. Flashed my BL to real 3.9 using iliberty+ ( I had flashed it earlier, if you haven’t, then skip this step), from the fake blank that I had
3. Ensured that all apple services are running & terminal service was also running (from within services.msc in windows)
4. connected iphone to PC & launched itunes 8.0.2
5. Clicked shift+restore & browsed to the “iPhone1,1_2.2_5G77_Restore” file from the folder I created, itunes will run your phone into recovery mode automatically
6. It’ll evaluate & consume some time in it, then there’ll be a few stages: “preparing iphone for restore”, “preparing the software for restore”
7. It’ll restart a couple of times & come to a screen where it’ll say “emergency calls only” & itunes will start automatically connecting to itunes store- cancel it in itunes & close itunes
8. open quickpwn, select the same ipsw file, BLs…next …next & then select all that applies- cydia, installer 4.0, boot logos, activate
9. let quickpwn do its thing!! it’ll take time & don’t worry
10. it’ll restart & recognize the sim card in it
11. reconnect to itunes, it’ll ask you if you want to start afreash or restore the back up, choose what you want &
….ENJOY!!

I have iphone 2G and all my efforts to upgrade to firmware 2.0 above have failed. I used all your guides winpwn, quickpwn, pwnage no way. I keep getting a message that iphone can’t be restored for unknown error (5). Please assist.
I recently bought a 3G and I did all I can to unlock it for use with my carrier but I keep getting errors. The custom IPSW I built using winpwn gives error 1600 whenever I try to restore and quickpwn does not detect the iphone as anytime I connect it it starts looking for drivers. Are there any drivers? where can I download them? Since I bought the new Iphone I have not been able to use it.
