Complete Guide: Jailbreak & Unlock iPhone 2.2 (2G) using QuickPwn (For Windows) [Updated for firmware 2.2.1]

by Simon Ng on November 27, 2008

Thanks for waiting. Finally, I managed to update the iPhone 2.2 jailbreak guide for Windows user. This guide is specifically for iPhone 2G (also known as 1st generation iPhone).

Update: Now, you can refer to the latest jailbreak guide to upgrade to iPhone 3.0.

Previously, I covered the whole process to jailbreak iPhone 2.2 using Pwnage Tool (for Mac). Here comes to the complete guide for Windows users. This guide is designed for:

  • Those who own iPhone 2G and plan for jailbreak & unlock (If you do not know what Jailbreak & Unlock are, check out my post of “Why Jailbreak?“)
  • Those who already have jailbreak iPhone and would like to upgrade to firmware 2.2 or 2.2.1. (To learn more about new features offered in firmware 2.2, you can refer to this post)

To jailbreak firmware 2.2 on Windows, we’ll use QuickPwn 2.2 or 2.2.5-2 to perform jailbreak and unlock for your iPhone. Developed by iPhone Dev Team, QuickPwn is the easiest tool to jailbreak & unlock iPhone. The jailbreak process is so straightforward that any iPhone owner can manage the jailbreak.

Before going forward to the jailbreak procedures, let’s me highlight again. This guide is for iPhone 2G. I’m updating the jailbreak guide for iPhone 3G. Please stay tuned.

Okay, let’s get start.

Preparation for Jailbreak & Unlock

1. First, make sure you have upgraded to iTunes version 8.0.2 and backup your iPhone data by synchronizing it with iTunes.

Tip: You can download older version of iTunes here if Apple already releases a newer version of iTunes at the time you’re reading this post.

2. Download QuickPwn 2.2, Bootloader 3.9 & 4.6 and iPhone firmware 2.2. Save them all in the same folder. And unzip QuickPwn22.zip. So make sure you have all the files in place before continue.

If you plan to upgrade to firmware 2.2.1, please download QuickPwn 2.2.5-2 and firmware 2.2.1 instead. Firmware 2.2.1 is only a bug fix version. It’s up to you to consider the upgrade.

Installing iPhone Firmware 2.2 via iTunes

3. Next, connect your iPhone to your computer via USB cable and launch iTunes. Select your iPhone in iTunes.

4. Okay, now hold the SHIFT key and click the “Restore” button. iTunes will launch a file dialog for you to select the firmware file. Locate the “iPhone1,1_2.2_5G77_Restore.ipsw” you have downloaded in previous step and click “Open”.

For firmware 2.2.1, please use “iPhone1,1_2.2.1_5H11_Restore.ipsw” instead.

5. iTunes will then restore your iPhone with firmware 2.2. Keep your iPhone connected, don’t touch it and wait until the process completes.

Jailbreak & Unlock with QuickPwn

6. Now, your iPhone should completely restore to firmware 2.2. But it’s locked right now.

7. Launch QuickPwn 2.2 to start jailbreak & unlock.

If you’re upgrading to firmware 2.2.1, please use QuickPwn 2.2.5-2.

8. Ensure you have the iPhone connected and then click blue button to continue.

9. Next, you are required to provide the firmware 2.2 IPSW file. Click “Browse” button to locate it. You should see a big tick if your firmware file is correct. Then click the blue arrow to continue.

For Firmware 2.2.1 jailbreak, please locate your firmware 2.2.1 IPSW file (iPhone1,1_2.2.1_5H11_Restore.ipsw)

10. You can then configure the settings for QuickPwn. Normally, you can check all checkboxes (i.e. Add Cydia, add installer, Replace boot logo & unlock iPhone). But if you do not keep the Apple logo, left “Replace boot logo” unchecked. Click blue arrow button to continue.

11. Next, locate the bootloader 3.9 and 4.6 files that you have downloaded by clicking “Browse” button. Once complete, QuickPwn will verify the files and show a big tick if they are correct. Then click blue arrow button to continue.

12. Your iPhone should still be connected with USB cable. QuickPwn requests you to confirm it once again as the Jailbreak process will begin. If you’re ready, click blue arrow button to continue.

13. Now, QuickPwn starts to jailbreak and unlock your iPhone. It automatically puts the iPhone into recovery mode. After that, you’ll be asked to hold Home button for 5 seconds. Then hold Home and Power buttons together for 10 seconds. Next, release Power button and continue to hold Home button until your iPhone is in DFU mode (QuickPwn will prompt you when you’re in DFU mode, just follow what QuickPwn says).

14. While jailbreaking, your iPhone will show downloading jailbreak data, flashing NOR, etc. And, just don’t touch your iPhone and keep waiting.

15. Once completed, QuickPwn will let you know the jailbreak process is successful. Your iPhone will be restarted and automatically launch BootNeuter to perform unlock. This process will take 3-5 minutes to complete. Be patient. When complete, your iPhone will be rebooted.

16. Congratulation, you now complete the jailbreak process with iPhone firmware 2.2. Lastly, sync back your backup data with iTunes.

Hope you’ll have a smooth jailbreak process. As always, leave me message and share your jailbreak experience.

Hi I just did this whole process like you explained except for the unlocking part. I upgraded mistakenly to 2.2 but i was still able to mak,e calls using Tmobile. The only problem I’m having is when it’s asking me to hold the buttons down. Right when it’s about to jailbreak, quickpwn tells me the connection failed cause i either didn’t follow instructions or have a failed usb (which i don’t). I did the process like 10 times, downloaded quickpwn from different sources and still nothing. My phone even goes to the jailbreaking data screen so i don’t know. Have any suggestions?

Am I right in saying I would lose all my “Contacts” that are saved onto my iPhone by upgrading my jailbroken firmware to 2.2?

Reply

17 Jamie November 28, 2008 at 7:16 pm

I have just looked into it. If you have jailbroken already, and are upgrading. Download and install “iSIM” from Installer. You can copy all your phone contacts over to your Sim card.

This way you won’t lose all your contacts when updating to the latest jailbroken firmware. Hope this helps anyone worried about losing their phone contacts.

No problem at all whilst using this jailbreak method. Was real smooth. Thanks again. xD

Only problem is, I seem to have lost 0.20gb disk space. Is that normal? It’s not a problem though really.

Reply

20 Simon Ng November 28, 2008 at 10:18 pm

Jamie, you can sync your contact via iTunes before upgrade. Later after jailbreak, resync it with iTunes to restore all your contacts.

Reply

21 Jamie November 28, 2008 at 11:07 pm

Thanks mate. I have done. I used Windows Address Book. Unfortunately it’s imported thousands of contacts from Outlook Express too. Ha. Not to worry, I think I have them all on my SIM Card. =]

Thanks though. Jailbreak went well. How come installer seems to have less things than in 1.1.4 version?

I just had one problem, I couldn’t run QuickPwn 2.2 because my computer’s .Net Framework needed to be updated. So I just updated my Framework and everything went smooth. If someone else had the same problem, just go to the link below.

All my contacts, music, photos, etc. are restored, no loses there.

Unfortunately some of my previous applications are gone, not even with the sync was I able to restore them.

Thanks again!

I´ve read the guide and seams to be very easy to do, but the first time that I try to jailbreak my Iphone I was not able to enter the DFU mode, so I´m a little afraid to upgrade from firmware 1.1.4 to 2.2. I´ve read that Kison had this problem, could you tell me how you solved it?

Thaks a lot for your support.

Hi Simon,

I’ve read this thread and also, the thread using 2.1
I have an unlocked and jailbroken iphone on 1.1.4 (4A102) with a bb of 04.02.13_G I used ziphone 2.3 and 2.5 to get the iphone unlocked and jailbroken.
Should I use 2.1 or 2.2?
Also, before I begin, do I need to restore the iphone first (DMF – back to the original out of the box) before attempting to do the things you listed?

Thanks for the info. Greatly appreciated.

This was a great tutorial! I had to update from 1.1.1 to 1.1.4 using ZiPhone, which was easy with some basic youtube videos. But then once i was standing on 1.1.4 i was able to use this tutorial above to get it upgraded to 2.2! Pretty easy with QuickPwn! Thanks. unfortanly i lost all my contacts, make sure you back them up in a txt file atleast just so you can manualy type them if itunes find your restore currpt. Good lick!

I have recorded video with cycorder and have installed a new theme with Winterboard. Thanks for the incredibly easy to follow instructions. For those of you who got here through a google search like I did, you have reached the right place. Follow the instructions above and you will be able to unlock without a problem.

I downloaded everything, followed the tutorial to the T, and QuickPwn goes all the way to the “Ready to Pwn” screen and gets stuck on the first step: “Wait for your iphone….recovery Mode”. I have waited about 20 mins and nothing.
How long do I have to wait untill nothing will happen? I think I have reached that point. What could be the problem?
Thanks

There are quite a number of ppl who upgraded their iPhone from 1.1.4 to 2.2 and run into “No Service” problem. I have this problem and it is still not resolved, despite trying twice to repeat the steps. There is also no “Carrier network” in the Phone Settings, hence I believe my iPhone is successfully jailbroken but not unlocked. I have no solutions and I searched everything but no answers. Can anyone help here?

During one of the step where it asks to tick “unlock phone”…I did check on the box. In fact I checked all the boxes except replacing the logo.

Can anyone share the solution of how to resolve this “no service” problem.

I can’t even restore back to 1.1.4 and basically…I am stuck here.

Hello,

I got my iPhone 2G unlocked at a random phone store and the guy there said that if i update software my phone wont work (i use AT&T Go Phone Plan, which works awesome on the iPhone, email me to find how i did it). He used that same software that’s online, the one that’s in this tutorial. Anyway, when I check Cydia it says YES in green next to 2.2, does that mean I can undate and be good to go? I mean will my phone still work? I’m addicted to my iPhone and would go crazy if it doesnt work. I want 2.2 bc some apps i try to get from the AppStore wont work on 2.1.

Some advice?

Absolutely Fantastic :)
it took me no less than 9 minutes to finish the whole thing, including restoring my old contacts, songs and apps.
This is by far the best Jailbreaking and unlocking tutorial I’ve seen on the net!
Thank you so much.. and if you could include a Paypal donation button, I’d love to donate. You deserve it!

Hi Simon,
I used your jailbreak guide to upgrade to 2.1 a few months back and my phone works great! Now I want to upgrade to the new 2.2.
Do you know if/how I can keep my current Apps during the process… is this achieved through the iphone backup in itunes?
Thanks for your hard work!

Stuart, you can just sync the iPhone application back to your computer via iTunes. After upgrade, sync it back to restore them.

Hello, I have an issue here.
I followed a guide earlier that upgrades Iphone 2G from 1.1.4 to 2.0, but I didn’t work out cause I was apparently using a too update Itunes (8.0)(ERROR 1600). So I got now a LOCKED Iphone. Which only shows a cable pointing towards Itunes on the screen. I tried to follow your guide but I get stuck on Part 3. Cause I can’t click on “Restore” button. It sais “The SIM card inserted in this Iphone does not appear to be supported.” but I’m using the same SIM as before. I even tried taking out the SIM but still wont work. I really regret trying to upgrade to 2.0 from the start. I wouldn’t had this problem :(
If it’s any use, my SIM is from Sweden.
Please Simon, any chance you could help me out here ?

99 Demis Benjamin December 11, 2008 at 5:49 am

Problem solved. Since my Iphone was already locked, I went into DFU mode before step 3 and it worked out for me. I could click on Restore button now. Thanks anyway :)

Too bad, the restore process took me more than half hours and I guess there is something wrong somewhere. I do not how to fix it, the jailbreak and unlock seems to be correct, but why the Restore process take so long time?
Is the jailbreak and unlock using Quickpwn must have the itune open all the time? I accidentally closed it during the jailbreak processes. Would it affect the device jailbreak process?
Simon, please advice, thank you.

@Mrphisto zap, you can follow this guide to jailbreak and unlock the iPhone. Hope this can solve your issue.

@divya, if you follow this guide, you’ll not see the pineapple logo after jailbreak. I prefer to keep the Apple logo. But if you want to have pineapple logo, you can check “Replace boot logos” in step 10.

@jebs81, did you install any application from Installer? And can you make phone call from Contacts? I have heard about the issue. Most of them are related to “Kate”, an application from Installer. You may solve it after uninstall it.

Thanks a lot to Simon and iPhone Dev Team.

For the last one month I was little hesitant to upgrade my iPhone (2G) based on the bad experiences that few of them got into to while upgrading their iPhones.

After going through Simon’s steps and the user feedback it gave me full confidence to go ahead with the Upgrade :-)

I have successfully upgraded my iPhone (2G) from 1.1.4 (that was jailbreaked/unlocked using Ziphone in Mar’08) to 2.2 (using Simon’s instructions and QuickPwn22-1.exe).

The whole process took me 45 minutes, right from Step-1 to Step-16 (including the restoration of my contacts, songs and etc that were synced to my computer earlier before the upgrade).

Step-5 (10 mins) and Step-14 (7 mins) are the most time consuming steps.

Just follow the steps listed in this page (by Simon) diligently and you will not have any problems. The key word is patience !!!!!

Good luck to the rest of the folks still on 1.1.4 firmware.

Cheers,
MK.

@mynk, if you’re on firmware 1.1.4, your iPhone should be a 2G iPhone.

@lady l, which step did you encounter the error?

@kenny, did you upgrade iTunes to the latest version? Also, did you use USB hub? Try not to use USB hub and connect iPhone via USB cable directly. You can also refer to Apple support forum for possible fix.

I remove the SIM, upgraded iTunes and the phone firmware to 2.2
After the firmware, I did NOT “restore” in iTunes, but ran the steps for QuickPwn above. I inserted the new SIM card before running the final step in QuickPwn

Everything worked fine!

My original 2G that was never under AT&T contract and unlocked from the beginning, started to develop touch screen problems. After much persistence, I got Apple store to give me a replacement phone without trying to activate it at their store. Now that I’m at home and trying to unlock it, I can’t get iTunes 8.02.02 to recognize my phone to get to the “restore” button. Instead, it is asking my to activate my phone, first. I’ve downloaded all your files, but how do I get iTunes home page where the I can hold down the “shift” button while selecting “restore” in iTunes and perform step 3?

I have a problem.
I did the procedure while having the AT&T SIM in the iPhone, and everything worked fine. But, when I inserted my other SIM It says “Different SIM Detected, Please connect to iTunes.” When I connect to iTunes it tells me that the SIM I have is not supported and that only supported SIM cards from supported carriers can be used to activate the phone.
I put my AT&T SIM back to activate it, but it already is activated. I only get this message when I put my other SIM.
I can receive calls and messages but I can’t send them nor can I use my phone.
It’s on the USB –> iTunes page.
I read through the comments and couldn’t find a similar problem, Simon?

Hi,

I have a iphone 2g with 2.2 software. Currently I have AT&T connection and the iphone is unlocked. I want to unlock the iphone mainly because I want to use different carriers when travelling abroad, but in US I want to use ATT. Please let me know if ATT can be used with unlocked iphone?
Also the post here have steps to upgrade from 2.1 to 2.2 and followed by Jailbreaking and unlocking. Will it work if i start from step 6 to unlock my iphone and still use ATT sim card?

Thanks,

Dear Simon,

I upgraded my 1.1.4 iphone through the above process to 2.2 and the process went successfully. I have been using the iphone for more than a week normally. But since yesterday when I tried to restart my phone it got stuck on the apple logo, it doesnt go ahead of that. I tried to sync it with itunes and it detects the iphone, but the problem is that the iphone restarts within 15 minutes again and again so it cannot sync completely.

Please help me. Should I restore it again.

Thank you. Waiting for your quick reply.

My phone is currrently jailbroken with 2.02 firmware and I am going to upgrade to 2.2. Does anyone know about contacts being removed? When I plug my phone into Itunes it says it’s backing it up, does that mean when I plug it in after ugrading that it will re-sync all of my contacts currently on my phone?

right so i noticed that a couple of other people were having the same problem i was, were after jailbreaking and unlocking it said different SIM detected please connect to to Itunes and it would not work on any other service provider.
what i did to solve this problem was remove the SIM card and reinstall the 2.2 oftware on to the Iphone again. after it is compleat it will ask you to put in a SIM card to register the phone, don’t. close Itunes and then put in the SIM you would like to use (in my case t-mobile) and start the jailbreaking/unlocking prossess again and vuala and thats that prblem solved.

Mynk you asked if your Iphone is still 2g after updating to the 2.2 software, in answear the that, no your iphone is still a 2g Iphone

hoped this help a few people

@Pankaj, that’s pretty strange for your problem. Did you try to reboot the iPhone? Sometimes, a simple reboot will clean up the problem.

@Divyang, I think it’ll work for firmware 1.1.2.

@Aaron, thanks for your sharing and great advice.

205 Simon Ng December 26, 2008 at 11:07 pm

@vicky, you can still use AT&T sim card after jailbreak. As you’re already using firmware 2.2, you may probably start from step 6. But make sure you download all the required files in step 2.

Do you lose contacts when you jailbreak and even re-sync with itunes? Or do they go back into your phone when you re-sync it after jailbreaking and unlocking it?

Reply

208 Simon Ng December 27, 2008 at 9:36 am

@Charlie, you won’t lose the contact after jailbreak. What you have to do to preserve the contacts and SMS is to sync it with iTunes before jailbreak. After jailbreak complete, re-sync again with iTunes to restore the contacts.

@mynk, your iPhone should be a 2G iPhone. Here 2G means you are using the 2G telecom network. There is no way to convert any iPhone from 2G to 3G. If you want to enjoy 3G network for better data transfer speed, you’ll need to buy a iPhone 3G. For details about the difference between 2G & 3G, you can check out Wiki here and here.

FOR THE PEOPLE HAVING “NO SIGNAL” ISSUES AFTER JAILBREAK (3G, 2nd gen, 2.2, Windows, Quickpwn 2.2)
Lots of people seem to be having the “no signal” problem after jailbreaking their iPhones. I also had this problem after jailbreaking the first time.
This solution worked for me, and according to everything else I’ve read this should work for other versions of the iPhone and using the Pwnage Tool for Mac.

Connect your iPhone to iTunes and do a restore. Just click the “Restore” button in the iPhone window of iTunes and it will take care of restoring your iPhone (if you want to preserve your contacts, calendar, etc. then iTunes will prompt you to back up that data). Allow your iPhone time to restore to factory settings.

After the restore, you can go ahead and add back those contacts and calendar dates. DO NOT ADD BACK ANY APPS YET. I believe this is the cause of the problem.

Now use Quickpwn (Windows) or Pwnage Tool (Mac) to jailbreak your iPhone. Afterwards everything should be fine.

The idea here is that Quickpwn/Pwnage Tool can’t do their work properly with all the apps/other crap that people put on their iPhones over time, and the interference from those things causes issues with service/rebooting after jailbreaking. After doing all that my iPhone is jailbroken and working perfectly. Props to Simon for this blog post, and I hope this helps others to avoid a service loss like mine.

222 Joe December 29, 2008 at 4:19 pm

Two additions to my post:

1)Make sure that whatever generation/firmware you have, you’re using the corresponding Quickpwn/Pwnage Tool. (Generation/firmware info is under Settings==>General==>About) For further clarification, if you have the volume/mute buttons on the side of your iPhone, you have a 2nd gen.

2)My email is jpampalon@gmail.com if you need some more help. I can’t really help with incredibly technical issues like error messages or network/ip settings.

So i when and got the old 2.0.2 and the winpwn did all of that. Get the data working by downloading the tmobile hacks but because of the version half of the apps i have now don’t work. Is the wap.voicestream.com idea for people in the US with a full plan sim? Because there was no place in my settings to put in cellular data service. Oh and why are the winpwn screens always hard to read? they are never centered?

I started over and went step by step and what do you know? It worked. In 2.0.2 i needed the Hacks to make data work and just expected that i would need it but once i checked after running QuickPwN it all worked and seems faster. You people are GOD’s. Now when I hit the green call button, it just opens up the dial-pad, freezes, and then closes.

What should I do?

Hi Simon

Thanks a ton for posting all this here.. :-)
I successfully upgraded my firmware from 1.1.4 to 2.2 and itunes to 8.0
I am successfully able to make calls but I am unable to sync data back into iphone.

Infact I cannot see any arrow besides iphone which could be expanded to see the phone contents. There is no option as such to “Sync iphone” in file menu! So my iphone is all blank without any previous contents! And I am also getting error “itunes was unable to load provider data from sync services”

Waiting your inputs on this!

Amry,
Not sure but some ideas are : Easy to over look it that you have to tell it what to sync with. there are little check boxes in itunes when your iphone is connected. Another thing to get you started is settings>mail, contacts>Import SIM contacts. you might also try to set up accounts on the phone first. Hope that helps. Let us know.

Can somebody please help me???

As an aside, I originaly managed to unlock my phone on a computer running XP and when I got to the UK I inserted the new SIM card but I got the error telling me that it isn’t a valid SIM card so I tried to re-run the unlocking process on my Vista machine but now I can’t get past the 13th step. The problem is that I only have this laptop with me so I’m in a bit of a bind.

Hi everyone, i may need some serious help here…

i all ready did all this steps 3 times. and everything went according to the description… it does all the steps fine, and it tells me that everything seems to be working fine.

but…

the iphone is still locked.. every time i put a different sim card it tells me that that is an incorect sim card, and not appears to be supported.. even if a put a sim card from another iphone tells me the same, if a put an att sim card from another phone not an iphone tells me the sa,ethe only time it works is when i put the original sim card from that iphone on… and then is telling me that it needs to be activated to please use itunes to do the activation process… so i did it again and again… following the steps one by one and still the same situation.. im doing the fourth try at this moment but well lets see what happens..

so i have a few questions.. does it matter if a put or not a sim card on the iphone while jailbreaking and unlocking? do i need to put the original sim card? or a sim from another company? anyways i all ready try everyone…

please help me…

p.s. i try the same staeps in two different iphones 2G or first generation and the same situation, the jailbroken is fine i get cydia installer and i use and ownload packs and even som “games” but with the unlock phone part im just stuck

So I go into Contacts to call somebody (or use Fring to call via cellular), but I can’t interrupt the conversation (the other part has to do it). There is a bar at the top of the screen saying “Touch to return to call” but nothing happens when I touch it (it disappears and appears again). Any suggestion? quickpwn will only detect the iPhone if the phones software version is above 2.0.
I will assume you are getting the message from the application.
your question does not state what you want to achieve though.

Yes i am getting the message, but i am positive that i have updated it to 2.2
My question is:
Quickpwn is not detecting my device, and is this due to the fact that i skipped the restore firmware steps?

If not then tell me how quickpwn can detect my device, when i plug it into the USB port.

Please cross check the version on iTunes. It should auto detect if it is a supported version.
If it does not, then I think you should restore the firmwire to the the one given here.

Worked the first time on my unlocked g2 with 1.1.4. Read the instructions over and over about 5 times and then went for it. Pulled my SIM card out at first until the itunes site said to replace it (T-Mobile). I figured I was done for, but went on to a completely successful conclusion. It did ask me which provider I wanted to use (ATT or T-Mobile) and after selecting T-Mobile it got bars and Edge. When I turn the power off and then back on, it asks which network I want, but I dismiss it and it works fine.

Thanks a lot for a very good guide! Michael

hi guys,
Simont tnx for a hard work.
I unlocke my phone even it was little bit difficult in the start because I placed downloaded files on desctop, and was using ATT’s sim. When I put that files in different directory and used 3rd party SIM everything worked fine. SO I DID it, of course with Simon’s help, and you guys who left notes of your own experiences with it.
Tnx

I was sucessful in using QuickPwn 2.2 to unlock and jailbreak my 1st gen phone. Everything appears to be correct, except the “No Service” in the top left corner. I did the process twice and still get the same message. I even did another phone for a friend and it reads the SIM on that unit. Can someone please advise as what I can try to get service and SIM recognized.

Hi guys, I have a jailbreaked Iphone 2G with 1.1.4 software version and I’m trying to update it to 2.2. My problem appears at step 4: I can’t locate the file “iPhone1,1_2.2_5G77_Restore.ipsw”. I have downloaded twice the files simon mentioned, and still there is no file with this name.
Can you tell my what am I doing wrong? I am running Windows XP on my computer. Could this be the problem? Maybe it cannot read .ipsw files?

I have a problem; I think the jail break was successful, but not the unlock. I had 2.2 version before i started this process. I followed all the steps and i think jail break was done, not unlock. I did not have another carrier sim, so i put my friend’s att sim, it did not recognize, “different sim detected, connect to itunes”. I tried the procedure again. this time while restoring in the first step I took the original sim off the phone (as evan suggested) and restored it and put it back in and followed all the steps. again, I guess yes for jail break and no for unlock. I did not have any problems in any of the steps. i went through as describes in the above steps. As I said, I had 2.2 already on my 2g iphone. does it have anything to do with and I have another att sim to test if its unlocked or not. Please help/suggest me. Simon, I appreaciate your page as it seems many benefitted from this content.

Thanks.

@Wee, for application installed via iTunes, you can sync it to iTunes on your computer. After upgrade, you can then sync it back to restore them. But for applications installed via Installer, you may need to install them again.

@radu, which browser are you using to download the files? Are you using Safari?

For any one having problem with the message after jail break, “different sim detected, connect to itunes”, try this. I did it and worked for me:

restored without original att sim on 2.2 and then closed/disconnected itunes. and then put external sim which i planned to use (another att sim in my case) and followed the same procedure. It works great, no problem. I have to try it other carrier’s sim to check it works or not.

Thanks a lot guys.

ok so i used the previous version 2.1 to upgrade and unlock my 2g iphone from 1.1.4 to 2.1 firmware i am using tmobile and it worked great first try. i followed all the above steps to try and get 2.2 but when i get to step number 13 it just sits on wait for iphone to reboot in recovery mode and will not go through the rest of the process. i tried it 4 times and still no progress. so i went back and restored to 2.1 but would still like 2.2 any suggestions would be fantastic.

@Jacob, you’ll get the App Store icon after upgrade to firmware 2.2.

@nk, did you try to jailbreak your iPhone again?

@Desmond, I think you’re referring to those games installed via Installer. Yes, you may not be able to install those games. Installer on firmware 2.2 is still in beta and those free games may not be compatible with the latest firmware. Also, compared to iPhone App Store and Cydia, the applications hosted on Installer is less attractive.

Hey guys, no idea what happened but I will do my best to explain my dilema and solution so if anyone else has this probem they don’t have to do what I did and lose their mind and almost throw up. When I launched quickpwn it told me that .>=2.0 firmware is not supported. So what you can do to bypass that stupid error message is simple. unplug your iphone once you put the 2.2 firmware from above onto your phone. Then launch QuickPwn and click ok to the error message and plug in your iPhone. Then follow the steps and it should work like mine did. Except you are freaking out as its working haha. And the screen will turn white for a few moments and thats ok…just relax. Also I got an error message when I first put the fimware on my phone (unknown error OxE0000435). Switch USB ports and that should sort it out… The important part is my phone is unlocked and jailbroken on firmware 2.2 from 2.0.2. Thanks for the Blog Simon! Keep up the good work. Happy jailbreaking everyone.

I also had the “different Sim detected”issue.Tried over and over but still had same problem.

Heres how i solved it..
1. I restored the iphone with the 2.2 firmware downloaded from this site(with no Sim inserted)
2. After restoration, you’ll be asked to install valid sim and connect to itunes so the phone can be activated.Close itunes and Install the DESIRED sim(in my case tmobile).
3. Follow the quickpwn process and Voila!!

I have a 1st gen Iphone, v2.2 just upgraded via Itunes. It’s my old Iphone, as I am using the 3G. I was basically using it in v2.1 as an Ipod Touch, had wifi, working email, apps, etc. The phone has no sim card in it, and I upgraded it to v2.2. Now I get the phone wants to be activated by Itunes. At this point I only want to use it on wifi and try out jailbroke apps. Can I run through this process on a Vista machine with no SIM Card, and jailbreak it so it works like an ipod touch basically?

I’m new to the SIM card thing, as I was a Sprint customer, so if I wanted to could I take the sim card out of my wife’s AT&T phone, and insert it into the Iphone and use it?
Not sure how that would work with the data plan and all?

Open for advice.. Thanks

So everything worked out on the QuickPwn and it was supposedly unlocked with BootNeuter. But I today just put in a T-Mobile SIM card in to see if it was unlocked and it says it was a different network and I had to connect it to iTunes. I did that and it says the network wasn’t supported. Any ideas?

I posted this in 2.1 blog too.. followed the procedure here in 2.2, same issues:

I am new to iphone .. I bought a refurbished iPhone, trying to follow the procedure described here. But I never get to the first screen in itunes that shows me a “restore” button (The picture shown after these words above: Installing iPhone Firmware 2.2 via iTunes
3. Next, connect your iPhone to your computer via USB cable and launch iTunes. Select your iPhone in iTunes.).

When I first connect my iphone to the computer, I am presented with a screen that prompts me to activate my iphone with at&t. When I cancel out of it, I get ” your activation has been cancelled” and that point I can only eject out my iphone. Any help will be appreciated!

Well I did it. Wasn’t very hard. My only problem is that I lost all my apps along with other things. I guess my iphone did not back up properly. Kinda upset because I was trying to avoid this but…. Just make sure your phone is backed up properly.

Hey simon, i have read each & every comment but i still need a nod from ur side before i actually proceed.
I have 2g iphone firmware 1.1.14 jailbroke & unlocked using ziphone done by myself.. & now i feel i have waited a long time to upgrade my iphone to 2.2

BUT i have few queries after checking all comments…
1. Should i keep sim card inside the iphone or remove it before starting the process?
2. Should i uninstall all the applications which i installed through installer before the process?
3. can i revert back to my current firmware 1.1.14 in case something didnt work out?
4. Will it improve battery life of my 2g iphone after upgrade? currently last just a day

I am just little uncertain … that’s all

Do I have to leave the AT&T sim card in while running this program on my Iphone or do I put my T-Mobile sim card?

@Raj,

1. I suggest you to keep the SIM card inside the iPhone.
2. No need to uninstall the application, but all Installer applications will be removed after upgrade. You’ll have to re-install it. However, you may not be able to find the Installer application on firmware 2.2 as not every Installer applications are compatible with the new firmware. Also, Cydia (an alternative to Installer) is more popular on firmware 2.x.
3. I haven’t tried to revert back my firmware. But from some readers’ reply, this is possible.
4. No. Don’t expect there is a great improvement.

@Damian, I suggest you to put in T-mobile sim card during jailbreak. However, there is no concrete answer to your question. Some readers mentioned, they took out the sim card during the jailbreak process. You may browse through the comments and I believe you may find out some t-mobile users’ experience. Any other t-mobile users can help Damian?

But not in E-Mail, Google Earth.

WIFI/WLAN works everywhere!

Hey Simon,

Last week my 2G with 2.1 Ver stopped working forced me to upgrade to 2.2. Upgrade was smooth and successful as usual.

I am getting an issue now. When I take calls, sound volume is very very low though the volume bar shows that it is max. Anything I need to do to fix this? If not can I go back to 2.1? This low sound really sucks buddy…

I am upgrading my iPhone from 1.1.4 as per Simon. I am keeping my T-Mobile SIM in the device while upgrading and I never faced any issue till now.

Tmobile Users, this worked for me!!

Erin. Post # 76
“Everything seemed to work smoothly.”
However, after the whole process was done, I inserted my sim card and my iPhone displayed this message:”Different sim card detected, please connect to iTunes.” I connected, and iTunes told me that they did not support my t-mobile carrier. Nothing seemed to go wrong, though! What has happened?

This is exactly what happened to me the first time I went through this unlock process and I was starting to worry.
Note: I had an AT&T SIM card in the phone during this first try at unlocking the phone.

What worked for me was putting the Tmobile SIM card in before the jailbreak process, I put my Tmobile SIM card in right after step 5 where the phone is restored to 2.2 firmware and before step 7.

SO, restore the iphone to 2.2 firmware as seen up to step 5. After this process is complete stick your Tmobile SIM card in and launch Quickpwn 2.2 and follow the steps provided in this guide. It worked beautifully for me. BIG thanks to SimonBlog for putting this up and the iPhone Dev Team for developing Quickpwn.

Hopefully this will help some people and if someone has already posted something like this, then I don’t care because I didn’t read through all the comments.
