Complete Guide: Jailbreak & Unlock iPhone 2.2 (2G) using QuickPwn (For Windows) [Updated for firmware 2.2.1]

Thanks for waiting. Finally, I managed to update the iPhone 2.2 jailbreak guide for Windows user. This guide is specifically for iPhone 2G (also known as 1st generation iPhone).

Update: Now, you can refer to the latest jailbreak guide to upgrade to iPhone 3.0.

Previously, I covered the whole process to jailbreak iPhone 2.2 using Pwnage Tool (for Mac). Here comes to the complete guide for Windows users. This guide is designed for:

  • Those who own iPhone 2G and plan for jailbreak & unlock (If you do not know what Jailbreak & Unlock are, check out my post of “Why Jailbreak?“)
  • Those who already have jailbreak iPhone and would like to upgrade to firmware 2.2 or 2.2.1. (To learn more about new features offered in firmware 2.2, you can refer to this post)

To jailbreak firmware 2.2 on Windows, we’ll use QuickPwn 2.2 or 2.2.5-2 to perform jailbreak and unlock for your iPhone. Developed by iPhone Dev Team, QuickPwn is the easiest tool to jailbreak & unlock iPhone. The jailbreak process is so straightforward that any iPhone owner can manage the jailbreak.

Before going forward to the jailbreak procedures, let’s me highlight again. This guide is for iPhone 2G. I’m updating the jailbreak guide for iPhone 3G. Please stay tuned.

Okay, let’s get start.

Preparation for Jailbreak & Unlock

1. First, make sure you have upgraded to iTunes version 8.0.2 and backup your iPhone data by synchronizing it with iTunes.

Tip: You can download older version of iTunes here if Apple already releases a newer version of iTunes at the time you’re reading this post.

2. Download QuickPwn 2.2, Bootloader 3.9 & 4.6 and iPhone firmware 2.2. Save them all in the same folder. And unzip So make sure you have all the files in place before continue.

If you plan to upgrade to firmware 2.2.1, please download QuickPwn 2.2.5-2 and firmware 2.2.1 instead. Firmware 2.2.1 is only a bug fix version. It’s up to you to consider the upgrade.

Installing iPhone Firmware 2.2 via iTunes

3. Next, connect your iPhone to your computer via USB cable and launch iTunes. Select your iPhone in iTunes.

4. Okay, now hold the SHIFT key and click the “Restore” button. iTunes will launch a file dialog for you to select the firmware file. Locate the “iPhone1,1_2.2_5G77_Restore.ipsw” you have downloaded in previous step and click “Open”.

For firmware 2.2.1, please use “iPhone1,1_2.2.1_5H11_Restore.ipsw” instead.

5. iTunes will then restore your iPhone with firmware 2.2. Keep your iPhone connected, don’t touch it and wait until the process completes.

Jailbreak & Unlock with QuickPwn

6. Now, your iPhone should completely restore to firmware 2.2. But it’s locked right now.

7. Launch QuickPwn 2.2 to start jailbreak & unlock.

If you’re upgrading to firmware 2.2.1, please use QuickPwn 2.2.5-2.

8. Ensure you have the iPhone connected and then click blue button to continue.

9. Next, you are required to provide the firmware 2.2 IPSW file. Click “Browse” button to locate it. You should see a big tick if your firmware file is correct. Then click the blue arrow to continue.

For Firmware 2.2.1 jailbreak, please locate your firmware 2.2.1 IPSW file (iPhone1,1_2.2.1_5H11_Restore.ipsw)

10. You can then configure the settings for QuickPwn. Normally, you can check all checkboxes (i.e. Add Cydia, add installer, Replace boot logo & unlock iPhone). But if you do not keep the Apple logo, left “Replace boot logo” unchecked. Click blue arrow button to continue.

11. Next, locate the bootloader 3.9 and 4.6 files that you have downloaded by clicking “Browse” button. Once complete, QuickPwn will verify the files and show a big tick if they are correct. Then click blue arrow button to continue.

12. Your iPhone should still be connected with USB cable. QuickPwn requests you to confirm it once again as the Jailbreak process will begin. If you’re ready, click blue arrow button to continue.

13. Now, QuickPwn starts to jailbreak and unlock your iPhone. It automatically puts the iPhone into recovery mode. After that, you’ll be asked to hold Home button for 5 seconds. Then hold Home and Power buttons together for 10 seconds. Next, release Power button and continue to hold Home button until your iPhone is in DFU mode (QuickPwn will prompt you when you’re in DFU mode, just follow what QuickPwn says).

14. While jailbreaking, your iPhone will show downloading jailbreak data, flashing NOR, etc. And, just don’t touch your iPhone and keep waiting.

15. Once completed, QuickPwn will let you know the jailbreak process is successful. Your iPhone will be restarted and automatically launch BootNeuter to perform unlock. This process will take 3-5 minutes to complete. Be patient. When complete, your iPhone will be rebooted.

16. Congratulation, you now complete the jailbreak process with iPhone firmware 2.2. Lastly, sync back your backup data with iTunes.

Hope you’ll have a smooth jailbreak process. As always, leave me message and share your jailbreak experience.

Hi I just did this whole process like you explained except for the unlocking part. I upgraded mistakenly to 2.2 but i was still able to mak,e calls using Tmobile. The only problem I’m having is when it’s asking me to hold the buttons down. Right when it’s about to jailbreak, quickpwn tells me the connection failed cause i either didn’t follow instructions or have a failed usb (which i don’t). I did the process like 10 times, downloaded quickpwn from different sources and still nothing. My phone even goes to the jailbreaking data screen so i don’t know. Have any suggestions?

  16. Jamie November 28, 2008 at 7:10 pm #

Am I right in saying I would lose all my “Contacts” that are saved onto my iPhone by upgrading my jailbroken firmware to 2.2?

  17. Jamie November 28, 2008 at 7:16 pm #

I have just looked into it. If you have jailbroken already, and are upgrading. Download and install “iSIM” from Installer. You can copy all your phone contacts over to your Sim card.

This way you won’t lose all your contacts when updating to the latest jailbroken firmware. Hope this helps anyone worried about losing their phone contacts.

  18. Jamie November 28, 2008 at 8:01 pm #

No problem at all whilst using this jailbreak method. Was real smooth. Thanks again. xD

  19. Jamie November 28, 2008 at 8:05 pm #

Only problem is, I seem to have lost 0.20gb disk space. Is that normal? It’s not a problem though really.

  20. Simon Ng November 28, 2008 at 10:18 pm #

Jamie, you can sync your contact via iTunes before upgrade. Later after jailbreak, resync it with iTunes to restore all your contacts.

  21. Jamie November 28, 2008 at 11:07 pm #

Thanks mate. I have done. I used Windows Address Book. Unfortunately it’s imported thousands of contacts from Outlook Express too. Ha. Not to worry, I think I have them all on my SIM Card. =]

Thanks though. Jailbreak went well. How come installer seems to have less things than in 1.1.4 version?

  22. ammy November 29, 2008 at 12:03 am #

    is this site a scam??
they claim to be able to unlock 3g with firmware 2.2

  23. Ricci November 29, 2008 at 12:35 am #

    Thanks a lot!!!
I just had one problem, I couldn’t run QuickPwn 2.2 because my computer’s .Net Framework needed to be updated. So I just updated my Framework and everything went smooth. If someone else had the same problem, just go to the link below.

All my contacts, music, photos, etc. are restored, no loses there.

Unfortunately some of my previous applications are gone, not even with the sync was I able to restore them.

    Thanks again!

I´ve read the guide and seams to be very easy to do, but the first time that I try to jailbreak my Iphone I was not able to enter the DFU mode, so I´m a little afraid to upgrade from firmware 1.1.4 to 2.2. I´ve read that Kison had this problem, could you tell me how you solved it?

Thaks a lot for your support.

  25. Alcion November 29, 2008 at 1:44 am #

Another question, if I want to keep the apple logos on my iphone, do I have to check the option “Replace boot logos”???? Thanks again.

Alcion, do not check the “Replace boot logo” option if you want to keep the Apple logo.

    Hi Simon,

I’ve read this thread and also, the thread using 2.1
I have an unlocked and jailbroken iphone on 1.1.4 (4A102) with a bb of 04.02.13_G I used ziphone 2.3 and 2.5 to get the iphone unlocked and jailbroken.
    Should I use 2.1 or 2.2?
Also, before I begin, do I need to restore the iphone first (DMF – back to the original out of the box) before attempting to do the things you listed?

Thanks for the info. Greatly appreciated.

  43. matt November 30, 2008 at 9:44 am #

This was a great tutorial! I had to update from 1.1.1 to 1.1.4 using ZiPhone, which was easy with some basic youtube videos. But then once i was standing on 1.1.4 i was able to use this tutorial above to get it upgraded to 2.2! Pretty easy with QuickPwn! Thanks. unfortanly i lost all my contacts, make sure you back them up in a txt file atleast just so you can manualy type them if itunes find your restore currpt. Good lick!

  44. Simon Ng November 30, 2008 at 10:11 am #

Sam, I suggest you to upgrade to firmware 2.2 directly, which offers more features. You can follow this guide from step 1 and it already includes everything you need to upgrade from firmware 1.1.4 to 2.2.

  45. Sam November 30, 2008 at 10:16 am #

Thanks for the quick reply Simon. I will read this over a few more times before attempting. Will post results. Tnx again for the tutorial.

  46. Alcion November 30, 2008 at 11:50 am #

Thanks for all your help, I´m downloading firmware 2.2 at this moment, so tomorrow you´ll have the follow up, I´m sure I´ll give you good news.

    Thanks Simon for you tutotial.

I still can’t get the phone to work on Suncom. It said the unlock was successful and everything went through, is there something I’m missing? Is there a way to select another carrier?

  48. Matt December 1, 2008 at 12:40 pm #

I have a non-jailbroken iPhone 2g with the 2.2 software already installed from iTunes. If I want to simply jailbreak my phone, are these the correct steps to take?

  49. Alcion December 1, 2008 at 3:26 pm #

I follow the tutorial and jailbreak and unlock my 2G iphone with the 2.2 firmware without problems in about 15 minutes, thanks for this excellent work Simon.

  50. Chris December 2, 2008 at 12:29 am #

I was able to jailbreak and unlock my previously unlocked IPhone without any problems. I am now operating my Iphone on T-Mobile in the United States with T-Zones hack as my data plan. I have recorded video with cycorder and have installed a new theme with Winterboard. Thanks for the incredibly easy to follow instructions. For those of you who got here through a google search like I did, you have reached the right place. Follow the instructions above and you will be able to unlock without a problem.

Followed this guide step by step and would like to shake hands with the author. It worked a treat and cydia is an added bonus. Thank you very much and keep up the good work.

How long do I have to wait untill nothing will happen? I think I have reached that point. What could be the problem?

  69. skerning December 4, 2008 at 9:37 am #

There are quite a number of ppl who upgraded their iPhone from 1.1.4 to 2.2 and run into “No Service” problem. I have this problem and it is still not resolved, despite trying twice to repeat the steps. There is also no “Carrier network” in the Phone Settings, hence I believe my iPhone is successfully jailbroken but not unlocked. I have no solutions and I searched everything but no answers. Can anyone help here?

During one of the step where it asks to tick “unlock phone”…I did check on the box. In fact I checked all the boxes except replacing the logo.

Can anyone share the solution of how to resolve this “no service” problem.

I can’t even restore back to 1.1.4 and basically…I am stuck here.

  70. Mbarak Shebe December 5, 2008 at 1:42 pm #

Thanks buddy, I enjoy unlocking my iPhone… It worked with iTunes, lol, I took 15min and just worked at first attempt.

  71. toiletooth December 6, 2008 at 2:27 am #

I used quickpwn 2.2 and t-mobile edge works fine. if it doesn’t, go into cydia and apply the t-mobile hack. don’t try installing through itunes. not even a pwned backup will install anymore.

  72. vel December 6, 2008 at 4:44 am #

I got my iPhone 2G unlocked at a random phone store and the guy there said that if i update software my phone wont work (i use AT&T Go Phone Plan, which works awesome on the iPhone, email me to find how i did it). He used that same software that’s online, the one that’s in this tutorial. Anyway, when I check Cydia it says YES in green next to 2.2, does that mean I can undate and be good to go? I mean will my phone still work? I’m addicted to my iPhone and would go crazy if it doesnt work. I want 2.2 bc some apps i try to get from the AppStore wont work on 2.1.

    Some advice?

  76. Erin December 7, 2008 at 3:18 am #

Everything seemed to work smoothly. However, after the whole process was done, I inserted my sim card and my iPhone displayed this message:”Different sim card detected, please connect to iTunes.” I connected, and iTunes told me that they did not support my t-mobile carrier. Nothing seemed to go wrong, though! What has happened?

    • Joerg June 11, 2009 at 2:13 pm #

I am having the same problem with the t-mobile sim card. Has this been solved?

  77. Edgar December 7, 2008 at 5:07 am #

    Hi Simon

Your blog is excellent. Just what a novice needs to know for basic unlocking and jailbreaking. I already used your guide once for 2.1 and just upgraded to 2.2. Thanks a lot and keep up the good work!

  82. Ronny December 7, 2008 at 9:21 pm #

    Hi there,

Followed your guide and all worked very well. Started to use cydia and the installer and generally working out how it all works. Afetr a day I could no longer access my phonebook or make any calls. I managed to restore my iphone and go through the jailbreak process again but I wanted to know if there was any reason for this and maybe a quick way to fix the problem without having to restore the whole phone?

  83. crossbin52 December 8, 2008 at 7:05 am #

THANK YOU SO SO MUCH FOR THIS!! I ‘ve been trying to restore my phone for the longest time and nothing worked!!! Its finally unlocked and jailbroken!! Thanks!!

@Ronny, that’s pretty strange. Normally you only need to jailbreak once and your iPhone should be OK.

@vic, can you access Cydia? If yes, you can download bootneuter from it and launch it to unlock your iPhone again.

  87. JT December 9, 2008 at 12:43 am #

I followed your instructions exactly and it worked beautifully! Thank you so much for the instructions and all the other great stuff on your website!

  88. Zaz December 9, 2008 at 6:04 am #

    Absolutely Fantastic :)
it took me no less than 9 minutes to finish the whole thing, including restoring my old contacts, songs and apps.
This is by far the best Jailbreaking and unlocking tutorial I’ve seen on the net!
Thank you so much.. and if you could include a Paypal donation button, I’d love to donate. You deserve it!

Have a great day, and happy holidays.

  90. Stuart December 9, 2008 at 2:26 pm #

    Hi Simon,
I used your jailbreak guide to upgrade to 2.1 a few months back and my phone works great! Now I want to upgrade to the new 2.2.
Do you know if/how I can keep my current Apps during the process… is this achieved through the iphone backup in itunes?
    Thanks for your hard work!

  91. Simon Ng December 9, 2008 at 9:26 pm #

Stuart, you can just sync the iPhone application back to your computer via iTunes. After upgrade, sync it back to restore them.

  92. Zeze December 10, 2008 at 4:29 am #

GREAT!!!! it took me less than 9 minutes. THNXS a lot

  93. Kimonodoll December 10, 2008 at 11:00 am #

You have got the instructions right to the tee! I don’t know much about computers and the iphone technology itself, but I followed your instructions step by step and now it’s unlocked. Many thanks! The only MINOR difficult part was step 13…(had to do it 3 times). Thanks again!

  97. Demis Benjamin December 11, 2008 at 5:16 am #

Hello, I have an issue here.
I followed a guide earlier that upgrades Iphone 2G from 1.1.4 to 2.0, but I didn’t work out cause I was apparently using a too update Itunes (8.0)(ERROR 1600). So I got now a LOCKED Iphone. Which only shows a cable pointing towards Itunes on the screen. I tried to follow your guide but I get stuck on Part 3. Cause I can’t click on “Restore” button. It sais “The SIM card inserted in this Iphone does not appear to be supported.” but I’m using the same SIM as before. I even tried taking out the SIM but still wont work. I really regret trying to upgrade to 2.0 from the start. I wouldn’t had this problem :(
If it’s any use, my SIM is from Sweden.
Please Simon, any chance you could help me out here ?

  98. Demis Benjamin December 11, 2008 at 5:49 am #

Problem solved. Since my Iphone was already locked, I went into DFU mode before step 3 and it worked out for me. I could click on Restore button now. Thanks anyway :)

Thanks for the hard work dude!!

  113. G33K December 13, 2008 at 7:19 pm #

Is it possible that someone uploads his working Custom firmwork and that I just shift+restore it in itunes? Would that work?

HAHAHA :D You guys rock!!! :D It works. If you ever come to Slovenia i’ll buy you as many beers as you want :D Tnx guys.

  115. Simon Ng December 13, 2008 at 10:55 pm #

QuickPwn is also available for Mac. Alternatively, for Mac platform, I suggest you to use PwnageTool for jailbreak. And you can check out this post for jailbreak.

  116. ktquah December 13, 2008 at 11:50 pm #

Too bad, the restore process took me more than half hours and I guess there is something wrong somewhere. I do not how to fix it, the jailbreak and unlock seems to be correct, but why the Restore process take so long time?
Is the jailbreak and unlock using Quickpwn must have the itune open all the time? I accidentally closed it during the jailbreak processes. Would it affect the device jailbreak process?
    Simon, please advice, thank you.

  129. Simon Ng December 14, 2008 at 9:36 pm #

@parwez, you can set the EDGE setting by tapping Settings ->General -> Cellular Data Network. Consult your carrier for APN, username and password.

@Ankit, great to see you successfully upgrade the iPhone!

@Husam, did you check the Unlock iPhone checkbox in step 10?

  130. G33K December 14, 2008 at 10:19 pm #

Hi. Before firmware i had installed 2.1 and i was able to download apps for free with programs appshare and installous. Now with 2.2 the icons of installed programs from installous are not shown. Why?

  131. Simon Ng December 14, 2008 at 10:50 pm #

G33K, you can use Cydia to download free iPhone application. Did you see that icon?

  132. G33K December 14, 2008 at 11:25 pm #

Yes I have Cydia icon. But in Cydia there is less applications available. I installed BossPrefs and checked the hidden icons. There were all applications that I installed with installous but even if I set them on unhide the icons don’t appear.

I live in Australia and i had 1.1.4 ive now upgraded all has work well but now i can not make any phone calls. please help

  142. Simon Ng December 15, 2008 at 11:21 pm #

@Mrphisto zap, you can follow this guide to jailbreak and unlock the iPhone. Hope this can solve your issue.

@divya, if you follow this guide, you’ll not see the pineapple logo after jailbreak. I prefer to keep the Apple logo. But if you want to have pineapple logo, you can check “Replace boot logos” in step 10.

@jebs81, did you install any application from Installer? And can you make phone call from Contacts? I have heard about the issue. Most of them are related to “Kate”, an application from Installer. You may solve it after uninstall it.

  143. jebs81 December 16, 2008 at 5:48 am #

Thanks for your help Simon i turned my phone on this morning and the phone was letting me chose vodafone which it was not doing last night so i can make phoen call. The only thing now which i will deal with is when there is no signal it keeps prompting me to change back to Auto network, but like i said i will deal with that. Thanks again for your help.

  152. Simon Ng December 18, 2008 at 8:10 am #

Pierre, did you try to restart the computer and run the whole procedures again? Sometimes, a second trial may resolve the issue, especially for Windows platform.

  153. MK December 18, 2008 at 1:59 pm #

Thanks a lot to Simon and iPhone Dev Team.

For the last one month I was little hesitant to upgrade my iPhone (2G) based on the bad experiences that few of them got into to while upgrading their iPhones.

After going through Simon’s steps and the user feedback it gave me full confidence to go ahead with the Upgrade :-)

I have successfully upgraded my iPhone (2G) from 1.1.4 (that was jailbreaked/unlocked using Ziphone in Mar’08) to 2.2 (using Simon’s instructions and QuickPwn22-1.exe).

The whole process took me 45 minutes, right from Step-1 to Step-16 (including the restoration of my contacts, songs and etc that were synced to my computer earlier before the upgrade).

Step-5 (10 mins) and Step-14 (7 mins) are the most time consuming steps.

Just follow the steps listed in this page (by Simon) diligently and you will not have any problems. The key word is patience !!!!!

Good luck to the rest of the folks still on 1.1.4 firmware.

    Hi Simon..!

This is the most awesome site i could log onto for my iphone.
your step by step guidlines are exceptional and amazing. Thank you very much.

  157. Simon Ng December 19, 2008 at 12:07 am #

@mynk, if you’re on firmware 1.1.4, your iPhone should be a 2G iPhone.

@lady l, which step did you encounter the error?

@kenny, did you upgrade iTunes to the latest version? Also, did you use USB hub? Try not to use USB hub and connect iPhone via USB cable directly. You can also refer to Apple support forum for possible fix.

  158. Pankaj December 19, 2008 at 3:35 pm #

    Hi Simon,

Thanks for your efforts to make jailbreak process easy.

    Successfully completed the process.

hey Simon.. Thank’s for the advice when I tried to do the procedures again it did good i’m now in 2.2 do you know an application like isms by shawn chain that can work in 2.2?

  161. Simon Ng December 19, 2008 at 10:30 pm #

@Pankaj, did you backup the SMS (via iTunes) before upgrade? If yes, you can sync it with iTunes again and restore it back.

@pierre, you can try “MySMS”, which is a pretty good SMS application. You can download it for free from Cydia.

  164. solikedude December 20, 2008 at 1:37 pm #

I upgraded from jailbroken and unlocked 1.1.4 phone to 2.2:
I remove the SIM, upgraded iTunes and the phone firmware to 2.2
After the firmware, I did NOT “restore” in iTunes, but ran the steps for QuickPwn above. I inserted the new SIM card before running the final step in QuickPwn

    Everything worked fine!

My original 2G that was never under AT&T contract and unlocked from the beginning, started to develop touch screen problems. After much persistence, I got Apple store to give me a replacement phone without trying to activate it at their store. Now that I’m at home and trying to unlock it, I can’t get iTunes 8.02.02 to recognize my phone to get to the “restore” button. Instead, it is asking my to activate my phone, first. I’ve downloaded all your files, but how do I get iTunes home page where the I can hold down the “shift” button while selecting “restore” in iTunes and perform step 3?

Hi, thanks alot man for the guide really helpful. i am using tmobile and this guide has succesfully upgraded me from 1.1.4 to 2.2 and jailbreak and unlocked it. i was really hesitant in upgrading before but after reading the success comments via this guide i gave it go and worked out really well.

  183. iphoneprob December 24, 2008 at 2:01 am #

using 2.1 version. want to use t mobile sim card. I have done this process everything seemed to work fine the only problem is I get no carrier settings and when I insert my sim it says please connect to I tunes different sim detected.

  184. Rayed December 24, 2008 at 5:34 am #

    I have a problem.
I did the procedure while having the AT&T SIM in the iPhone, and everything worked fine. But, when I inserted my other SIM It says “Different SIM Detected, Please connect to iTunes.” When I connect to iTunes it tells me that the SIM I have is not supported and that only supported SIM cards from supported carriers can be used to activate the phone.
I put my AT&T SIM back to activate it, but it already is activated. I only get this message when I put my other SIM.
I can receive calls and messages but I can’t send them nor can I use my phone.
It’s on the USB –> iTunes page.
I read through the comments and couldn’t find a similar problem, Simon?

    Hi Simon,
My phone was bricked and I was giving up until I read your blog. Worked first time without any issues. Big thanks to the Dev Team and to yourself – keep up the good work – all the best..

  186. Christian December 24, 2008 at 7:57 am #

Thanks!!! It worked like a charm and this is the first time I’ve ever unlocked an iPhone!! I recommend this highly.

I have a iphone 2g with 2.2 software. Currently I have AT&T connection and the iphone is unlocked. I want to unlock the iphone mainly because I want to use different carriers when travelling abroad, but in US I want to use ATT. Please let me know if ATT can be used with unlocked iphone?
Also the post here have steps to upgrade from 2.1 to 2.2 and followed by Jailbreaking and unlocking. Will it work if i start from step 6 to unlock my iphone and still use ATT sim card?

  190. Pankaj December 25, 2008 at 2:35 am #

    Dear Simon,

I upgraded my 1.1.4 iphone through the above process to 2.2 and the process went successfully. I have been using the iphone for more than a week normally. But since yesterday when I tried to restart my phone it got stuck on the apple logo, it doesnt go ahead of that. I tried to sync it with itunes and it detects the iphone, but the problem is that the iphone restarts within 15 minutes again and again so it cannot sync completely.

Please help me. Should I restore it again.

Thank you. Waiting for your quick reply.

I just purchased a 2G iphone with 2.2 already installed. So I skipped the first 2 steps 3,4 and 5. But after running the jailbreak I’m getting an error message that ” It could not be done. Iphone was connected in a wrong mode. ”
    please help me.

  192. Ron December 25, 2008 at 3:59 am #

“Your device has connected in the wrong mode. This can caused by incorrect following of the instructions or a faulty USB connection. Please try again.

    Hey everyone,

My phone is currrently jailbroken with 2.02 firmware and I am going to upgrade to 2.2. Does anyone know about contacts being removed? When I plug my phone into Itunes it says it’s backing it up, does that mean when I plug it in after ugrading that it will re-sync all of my contacts currently on my phone?

  194. Aarron December 25, 2008 at 11:14 am #

ok so atm i am jail breaking it and it all appears to be going well… ill leave follow up comment on how it all went.

  198. Aarron December 25, 2008 at 8:08 pm #

right so i noticed that a couple of other people were having the same problem i was, were after jailbreaking and unlocking it said different SIM detected please connect to to Itunes and it would not work on any other service provider.
what i did to solve this problem was remove the SIM card and reinstall the 2.2 oftware on to the Iphone again. after it is compleat it will ask you to put in a SIM card to register the phone, don’t. close Itunes and then put in the SIM you would like to use (in my case t-mobile) and start the jailbreaking/unlocking prossess again and vuala and thats that prblem solved.

Mynk you asked if your Iphone is still 2g after updating to the 2.2 software, in answear the that, no your iphone is still a 2g Iphone

hoped this help a few people

Hi i want to try this on ver 1.1.2 , anyone tried it yet ,
do let me know if it works ,
    Thank you .

  202. Simon Ng December 26, 2008 at 9:48 pm #

@Pankaj, that’s pretty strange for your problem. Did you try to reboot the iPhone? Sometimes, a simple reboot will clean up the problem.

    @Divyang, I think it’ll work for firmware 1.1.2.

@Aaron, thanks for your sharing and great advice.

  203. Simon Ng December 26, 2008 at 11:07 pm #

@vicky, you can still use AT&T sim card after jailbreak. As you’re already using firmware 2.2, you may probably start from step 6. But make sure you download all the required files in step 2.

  204. CyB3R December 27, 2008 at 3:04 am #

Thanks a lot for this step-by-step tutorial, i had the 1.1.4 installed until yesterday and it was a real pain in the ass, i dont even have edge enabled and when i opened safari always tried to connect from edge..! that was the thing that push me to change firmware..i follow the 1.1.4 to 2.0 and then 2.0 to 2.2 im pretty happy with it right know, its first time i use cydia, looks nice tough.

Thanks for your support. and sorry for my english its not my first language.

    Happy hollidays!

  205. Charlie December 27, 2008 at 5:47 am #

Do you lose contacts when you jailbreak and even re-sync with itunes? Or do they go back into your phone when you re-sync it after jailbreaking and unlocking it?

  206. Simon Ng December 27, 2008 at 9:36 am #

@Charlie, you won’t lose the contact after jailbreak. What you have to do to preserve the contacts and SMS is to sync it with iTunes before jailbreak. After jailbreak complete, re-sync again with iTunes to restore the contacts.

  208. Simon Ng December 27, 2008 at 2:49 pm #

@mynk, your iPhone should be a 2G iPhone. Here 2G means you are using the 2G telecom network. There is no way to convert any iPhone from 2G to 3G. If you want to enjoy 3G network for better data transfer speed, you’ll need to buy a iPhone 3G. For details about the difference between 2G & 3G, you can check out Wiki here and here.

Hey guys, so I just tried to update from 2.0.2 to 2.2 using the pwange tool on my friends mac and ran into a few errors. Wondering if anyone knows what they mean. First was error 1600 when trying to load custom IPSW. Second was error 6 when trying to load the IPSW. Both of the IPSW’s were custom made. Does anyone know if windows has had better success with jailbreaking 2.2?

  212. Charlie December 28, 2008 at 5:42 am #

BTW thanks Simon Ng that was true what you said. After the error messages I loaded 2.0.2 back with my friends mac and re-synced and im back to square 1 again. It is like that entire headache didn’t happen…

Now that i upgraded to the 2.2 and ran winpwn i get (could not activate cellular data network: you are not subscribed to a cellular data service) everything else seems to work but not edge. I tried the tmobile hacks from cydia and i tried running winpwn over again. Anyone have a fun link to a vid that will make me whole again i miss my iphone. The g1 just isn’t the same.

FOR THE PEOPLE HAVING “NO SIGNAL” ISSUES AFTER JAILBREAK (3G, 2nd gen, 2.2, Windows, Quickpwn 2.2)
Lots of people seem to be having the “no signal” problem after jailbreaking their iPhones. I also had this problem after jailbreaking the first time.
This solution worked for me, and according to everything else I’ve read this should work for other versions of the iPhone and using the Pwnage Tool for Mac.

Connect your iPhone to iTunes and do a restore. Just click the “Restore” button in the iPhone window of iTunes and it will take care of restoring your iPhone (if you want to preserve your contacts, calendar, etc. then iTunes will prompt you to back up that data). Allow your iPhone time to restore to factory settings.

After the restore, you can go ahead and add back those contacts and calendar dates. DO NOT ADD BACK ANY APPS YET. I believe this is the cause of the problem.

Now use Quickpwn (Windows) or Pwnage Tool (Mac) to jailbreak your iPhone. Afterwards everything should be fine.

The idea here is that Quickpwn/Pwnage Tool can’t do their work properly with all the apps/other crap that people put on their iPhones over time, and the interference from those things causes issues with service/rebooting after jailbreaking. After doing all that my iPhone is jailbroken and working perfectly. Props to Simon for this blog post, and I hope this helps others to avoid a service loss like mine.

  220. Joe December 29, 2008 at 4:19 pm #

    Two additions to my post:

1)Make sure that whatever generation/firmware you have, you’re using the corresponding Quickpwn/Pwnage Tool. (Generation/firmware info is under Settings==>General==>About) For further clarification, if you have the volume/mute buttons on the side of your iPhone, you have a 2nd gen.

2)My email is [email protected] if you need some more help. I can’t really help with incredibly technical issues like error messages or network/ip settings.

  221. JEDDDD December 30, 2008 at 6:34 am #

So i when and got the old 2.0.2 and the winpwn did all of that. Get the data working by downloading the tmobile hacks but because of the version half of the apps i have now don’t work. Is the idea for people in the US with a full plan sim? Because there was no place in my settings to put in cellular data service. Oh and why are the winpwn screens always hard to read? they are never centered?

  222. Curiosjo December 30, 2008 at 10:25 am #

I followed all the steps, It worked like a charm. Holding Home & Power button was weird but it worked. Good job.

  223. Spangila December 31, 2008 at 3:12 am #

Thank you thank you thank you!

I was on an unlocked US AT&T 1.1.3 on UK Ornage and ‘accidently’ updated to 2.2 and locked it out. Been trying other unlockers for a day now with no success and am happy to say this one worked.
    Thanks again x

Obviously I mean Orange not ornage!

  225. JEDDDD December 31, 2008 at 10:03 am #

Wow was i being dumb. Okay to anyone else that has had problems with data after the unlock and JB, do not i repeat DO NOT install the tmobile hacks from Cydia. I started over and went step by step and what do you know? It worked. In 2.0.2 i needed the Hacks to make data work and just expected that i would need it but once i checked after running QuickPwN it all worked and seems faster. You people are GOD’s. Dev team and all involved, really your money. Oh and Buuf2 is a sick theme check it out.

@ Simon Ng – Thanks for having this blog where we can get help for our problems. I’m having the same issue as Ronny from a few dozen posts up. I’m using t-mobile in a 2G 2.2 unlocked phone using QuickPwn and Windows Vista. I can’t make calls or receive calls, but it shows full bars. The first hour or two I could make calls. Now when I hit the green call button, it just opens up the dial-pad, freezes, and then closes.

    What should I do?

Thank you in advance for your help and Happy New Year!

  231. Amry January 3, 2009 at 5:18 pm #

    Hi Simon

Thanks a ton for posting all this here.. :-)
I successfully upgraded my firmware from 1.1.4 to 2.2 and itunes to 8.0
I am successfully able to make calls but I am unable to sync data back into iphone.

Infact I cannot see any arrow besides iphone which could be expanded to see the phone contents. There is no option as such to “Sync iphone” in file menu! So my iphone is all blank without any previous contents! And I am also getting error “itunes was unable to load provider data from sync services”

    Waiting your inputs on this!

  232. JEDDDD January 4, 2009 at 2:19 am #

Not sure but some ideas are : Easy to over look it that you have to tell it what to sync with. there are little check boxes in itunes when your iphone is connected. Another thing to get you started is settings>mail, contacts>Import SIM contacts. you might also try to set up accounts on the phone first. Hope that helps. Let us know.

I too am having the problem where my iPhone hangs after the prompt “Wait for your iPhone to connect in recovery mode…” at the start of step 13. I am running Vista Business and have tried the unlock process a number of times. I’ve tried it with my original back up as well as by first backing up with the blank-slate version of the firmware. Can somebody please help me???

As an aside, I originaly managed to unlock my phone on a computer running XP and when I got to the UK I inserted the new SIM card but I got the error telling me that it isn’t a valid SIM card so I tried to re-run the unlocking process on my Vista machine but now I can’t get past the 13th step. The problem is that I only have this laptop with me so I’m in a bit of a bind.

  236. EVAN January 4, 2009 at 10:36 am #

Hi everyone, i may need some serious help here…

i all ready did all this steps 3 times. and everything went according to the description… it does all the steps fine, and it tells me that everything seems to be working fine.

the iphone is still locked.. every time i put a different sim card it tells me that that is an incorect sim card, and not appears to be supported.. even if a put a sim card from another iphone tells me the same, if a put an att sim card from another phone not an iphone tells me the sa,ethe only time it works is when i put the original sim card from that iphone on… and then is telling me that it needs to be activated to please use itunes to do the activation process… so i did it again and again… following the steps one by one and still the same situation.. im doing the fourth try at this moment but well lets see what happens..

so i have a few questions.. does it matter if a put or not a sim card on the iphone while jailbreaking and unlocking? do i need to put the original sim card? or a sim from another company? anyways i all ready try everyone…

    please help me…

p.s. i try the same staeps in two different iphones 2G or first generation and the same situation, the jailbroken is fine i get cydia installer and i use and ownload packs and even som “games” but with the unlock phone part im just stuck

  239. Kitek January 4, 2009 at 8:56 pm #

Great guide. I followed all the steps, It worked like a charm. It is working with T-mobile.I propose to reset iphone to factory setting before you start..

  240. Simon Ng January 4, 2009 at 10:37 pm #

@EVAN, while jailbreaking and unlocking, I suggest to put the 3rd party SIM card in iPhone.

  241. Maky January 4, 2009 at 11:08 pm #

Everything worked out fine 4 me. Except that the Phone doesn’t work… I mean I cannot call nobody because when I tap the Phone app, it appears for 2-3 sec and then disappears (can’t tap into it). So I go into Contacts to call somebody (or use Fring to call via cellular), but I can’t interrupt the conversation (the other part has to do it). There is a bar at the top of the screen saying “Touch to return to call” but nothing happens when I touch it (it disappears and appears again). Any suggestion? Thanks in advance, greets from Croatia!

  242. JEDDDD January 4, 2009 at 11:43 pm #

Maky, i had the same issue and found it was because of the dialer themes. Leave it plain. Let me know if that helps.

  243. Maky January 5, 2009 at 12:45 am #

I’m new to all this stuff, but I’m sure I didn’t installed any theme, so I think the problem is somewhere else (maybe some package from Installer or Cydia). Thanks anyway… :)

  244. Jose January 5, 2009 at 1:05 am #

@Simon NG. So I have tried what you recomended to Evan, but all I can do when I insert the sim is make emergency calls using my T-mobile service, but I have to remove my sim to access the rest of the Iphone apps and settings. Thank You for your time.

  245. y0han January 5, 2009 at 1:35 am #

Great stuff! Took me 4 tries at step 13 and 1 switch of USB port.

    Hello all,
I am working from my compaq laptop, and quickpwn is not detecting my iphone.
I didnt follow the steps however to restore my iphone to firmware 2.2 because i thought that it was already running on that. Please let me know what i should do. Should i restore the firmware as described, or can quickpwn detect my iphone without restoring the firmware.

  250. Soubhik Datta January 5, 2009 at 9:51 pm #

    @ Raj

quickpwn will only detect the iPhone if the phones software version is above 2.0.
I will assume you are getting the message from the application.
your question does not state what you want to achieve though.

  251. Raj January 5, 2009 at 10:31 pm #

Yes i am getting the message, but i am positive that i have updated it to 2.2
    My question is:
Quickpwn is not detecting my device, and is this due to the fact that i skipped the restore firmware steps?

If not then tell me how quickpwn can detect my device, when i plug it into the USB port.

  252. Raja January 5, 2009 at 10:32 pm #

Please cross check the version on iTunes. It should auto detect if it is a supported version.
If it does not, then I think you should restore the firmwire to the the one given here.

  254. Atif January 6, 2009 at 3:02 am #

simon, i have successfully upgrade my 2G to v2.2 but now im having problem that it doesnt show any number when i want to dial or show my contact list. Also it automatically closed when i dial through contact list.

  255. JEDDDD January 6, 2009 at 6:20 am #

Qdawg, I had the same problem. I think it was because befor i would even check to see if edge worked, i installed the tzones and tmobile hacks. But I still re did everything. Took the links at the top for Gen1 iphones put it all in one folder. Updated itunes. Restarted my computer and went from there. The final try at 3am took less than 20mins and worked.

Simon: Now im having a problem after jail breaking I could no longer access my phonebook or make any calls. What should i do, should i do the whole process again or restore to factory setting through itunes

  258. Michael January 7, 2009 at 2:50 am #

Worked the first time on my unlocked g2 with 1.1.4. Read the instructions over and over about 5 times and then went for it. Pulled my SIM card out at first until the itunes site said to replace it (T-Mobile). I figured I was done for, but went on to a completely successful conclusion. It did ask me which provider I wanted to use (ATT or T-Mobile) and after selecting T-Mobile it got bars and Edge. When I turn the power off and then back on, it asks which network I want, but I dismiss it and it works fine.

Thanks a lot for a very good guide! Michael

well i finally got both phones working fine… i did had the latest version of itunes installed.. i knew that was not the problem because with the first iphone it happen with the last quickpwn, and using the 2.1 firmware…

i did the firmware installation whit no sim on the phone. and then put the sim in and then plug it to itunes, and then the QUICKPWN, and i did turn off my firewall all the way true… because my firewall also control the creation of applications (McAffe desktop firewall 8.5).

well all the iphones are working great now… i just had the battery problem in one it didnt last one day on stand by… i just did a full 10 hours charge and unpluged it. will see how long it last.. i remove sim card

thank you to all for all the help…

    hi guys,
Simont tnx for a hard work.
I unlocke my phone even it was little bit difficult in the start because I placed downloaded files on desctop, and was using ATT’s sim. When I put that files in different directory and used 3rd party SIM everything worked fine. SO I DID it, of course with Simon’s help, and you guys who left notes of your own experiences with it.

I was sucessful in using QuickPwn 2.2 to unlock and jailbreak my 1st gen phone. Everything appears to be correct, except the “No Service” in the top left corner. I did the process twice and still get the same message. I even did another phone for a friend and it reads the SIM on that unit. Can someone please advise as what I can try to get service and SIM recognized.

Hi guys, I have a jailbreaked Iphone 2G with 1.1.4 software version and I’m trying to update it to 2.2. My problem appears at step 4: I can’t locate the file “iPhone1,1_2.2_5G77_Restore.ipsw”. I have downloaded twice the files simon mentioned, and still there is no file with this name.
Can you tell my what am I doing wrong? I am running Windows XP on my computer. Could this be the problem? Maybe it cannot read .ipsw files?

I have a problem; I think the jail break was successful, but not the unlock. I had 2.2 version before i started this process. I followed all the steps and i think jail break was done, not unlock. I did not have another carrier sim, so i put my friend’s att sim, it did not recognize, “different sim detected, connect to itunes”. I tried the procedure again. this time while restoring in the first step I took the original sim off the phone (as evan suggested) and restored it and put it back in and followed all the steps. again, I guess yes for jail break and no for unlock. I did not have any problems in any of the steps. i went through as describes in the above steps. As I said, I had 2.2 already on my 2g iphone. does it have anything to do with and I have another att sim to test if its unlocked or not. Please help/suggest me. Simon, I appreaciate your page as it seems many benefitted from this content.

  272. Simon Ng January 11, 2009 at 1:40 am #

@Wee, for application installed via iTunes, you can sync it to iTunes on your computer. After upgrade, you can then sync it back to restore them. But for applications installed via Installer, you may need to install them again.

@radu, which browser are you using to download the files? Are you using Safari?

  273. Rajanee January 11, 2009 at 1:49 am #

For any one having problem with the message after jail break, “different sim detected, connect to itunes”, try this. I did it and worked for me:

restored without original att sim on 2.2 and then closed/disconnected itunes. and then put external sim which i planned to use (another att sim in my case) and followed the same procedure. It works great, no problem. I have to try it other carrier’s sim to check it works or not.

    Thanks a lot guys.

ok so i used the previous version 2.1 to upgrade and unlock my 2g iphone from 1.1.4 to 2.1 firmware i am using tmobile and it worked great first try. i followed all the above steps to try and get 2.2 but when i get to step number 13 it just sits on wait for iphone to reboot in recovery mode and will not go through the rest of the process. i tried it 4 times and still no progress. so i went back and restored to 2.1 but would still like 2.2 any suggestions would be fantastic.

@Jacob, you’ll get the App Store icon after upgrade to firmware 2.2.

@nk, did you try to jailbreak your iPhone again?

@Desmond, I think you’re referring to those games installed via Installer. Yes, you may not be able to install those games. Installer on firmware 2.2 is still in beta and those free games may not be compatible with the latest firmware. Also, compared to iPhone App Store and Cydia, the applications hosted on Installer is less attractive.

After going through trouble shooting guide on Apple’s web site I did a erase & reset of the iphone. Will revert back if get into any more problem.

I got to step 7. When I launch quickpwn it says that it only supports firmaware 2.0….I am using windows vista. Please helpe me….anyone…

  300. Charlie January 17, 2009 at 7:12 am #

Hey guys, no idea what happened but I will do my best to explain my dilema and solution so if anyone else has this probem they don’t have to do what I did and lose their mind and almost throw up. When I launched quickpwn it told me that .>=2.0 firmware is not supported. So what you can do to bypass that stupid error message is simple. unplug your iphone once you put the 2.2 firmware from above onto your phone. Then launch QuickPwn and click ok to the error message and plug in your iPhone. Then follow the steps and it should work like mine did. Except you are freaking out as its working haha. And the screen will turn white for a few moments and thats ok…just relax. Also I got an error message when I first put the fimware on my phone (unknown error OxE0000435). Switch USB ports and that should sort it out… The important part is my phone is unlocked and jailbroken on firmware 2.2 from 2.0.2. Thanks for the Blog Simon! Keep up the good work. Happy jailbreaking everyone.

  301. Charlie January 17, 2009 at 7:18 am #

@Poitius- try bitesms…it offers the landscape typing without the 30 second delay in messages. it will only do landscape for typing though, not viewing messages. It also does not have the forwarding texts option either. Try and let me know what you think..

  306. Manny January 19, 2009 at 12:42 pm #

I also had the “different Sim detected”issue.Tried over and over but still had same problem.

    Heres how i solved it..
    1. I restored the iphone with the 2.2 firmware downloaded from this site(with no Sim inserted)
    2. After restoration, you’ll be asked to install valid sim and connect to itunes so the phone can be activated.Close itunes and Install the DESIRED sim(in my case tmobile).
    3. Follow the quickpwn process and Voila!!

    Hey Simon!

I have a bit of a problem. I have an jailbroken, unlocked iphone 2g running on 2.0. I want to update it to 2.2 but i see that the instructions you gave require the power button. Unfortunetly my power button does not work. =/ Is there anyway around that?

    Thanks in advanced!

hey i have the first generation iphone 16g and I have 2.2. I did everything thats instructed but the phone wont unlock it doesnt let me access the phone because it wont accept the sim card. @ nk, I had the same problem. after jailbreak and unlock, phone freezed frequently, power button did not respond and some weird stuff. i thought it could be a hardware issue. I went back to itunes and restored it and my phone is unlocked now. I will have to follow the same process again. can you please tell me what exactly did you do from the apple website that helped you in the troubleshooting and not facing above issues?

after much angst and worrywarting about bricking the phone , I upgraded my 2.0FW unlocked 2gen iphone to 2.2FW without a hitch using this site. I had turned off terminal and messenger in XP , and loaded .net 3.5 but I never pulled the tmobile sim out. thanks , Simon, for helping us!

  311. Simon Ng January 22, 2009 at 8:18 am #

@Jandry, I can’t think of any workaround for that. You need to use the POWER button to put iPhone into DFU mode.

@Amanda, did you try the jailbreak procedures again? Sometimes, a second attempt may solve the issue.

I have a 1st gen Iphone, v2.2 just upgraded via Itunes. It’s my old Iphone, as I am using the 3G. I was basically using it in v2.1 as an Ipod Touch, had wifi, working email, apps, etc. The phone has no sim card in it, and I upgraded it to v2.2. Now I get the phone wants to be activated by Itunes. At this point I only want to use it on wifi and try out jailbroke apps. Can I run through this process on a Vista machine with no SIM Card, and jailbreak it so it works like an ipod touch basically?

I’m new to the SIM card thing, as I was a Sprint customer, so if I wanted to could I take the sim card out of my wife’s AT&T phone, and insert it into the Iphone and use it?
Not sure how that would work with the data plan and all?

    Open for advice.. Thanks

  334. Simon Ng January 25, 2009 at 10:21 pm #

@Marc, which SIM card did you use during jailbreak? Try to put in the vodafone sim and perform the procedures again.

@Kade, you probably need to enable some Windows services before using QuickPwn. You can check out this post about the hang issue of QuickPwn.

    I have a iPhone 2G 2.2 with T-Mobile, running Vista, iTunes 7.7.
I synced my iphone because my screen stopped working.
Apple gave me a new one no questions.
It had 2.2 installed, so I jailbroke it and unlock it with this tutorial.
but iTunes still says “the sim card inserted in this iphone does not appear to be supported ”

Please help! Please! I really can’t live without my iPhone.
    It’s my life!

I recently jailbreaked my iPhone 2.0 using this guide. So I restored it to 2.2 FW and used QuickPwn on Windows 7. So everything worked out on the QuickPwn and it was supposedly unlocked with BootNeuter. But I today just put in a T-Mobile SIM card in to see if it was unlocked and it says it was a different network and I had to connect it to iTunes. I did that and it says the network wasn’t supported. Any ideas?

  339. Alec January 26, 2009 at 11:48 am #

Just jailbreaked my iphone. Everything went smoothly. Iphone rebooted upon completion but still says”Different SIM detected. Please connect to iTunes”. I can only get to emergency call screen. Was able to make calls using tmobiel sim card, but can not get to any apps. Does anyone know what is wrong?

I forgot to include that I had an AT&T sim card in it by accident. I saw it in my iPhone when I ejected it out. Any ideas?

I have the 1st gen iphone. I did everything right, i think, and when it went to reload my ipod, the apple never went away, I waited 5 mins. HELP!!!
It just stopped on the step saying wait for your iphone to connect in recovery mode.!!!

  342. Salim January 27, 2009 at 6:31 am #

I posted this in 2.1 blog too.. followed the procedure here in 2.2, same issues:

I am new to iphone .. I bought a refurbished iPhone, trying to follow the procedure described here. But I never get to the first screen in itunes that shows me a “restore” button (The picture shown after these words above: Installing iPhone Firmware 2.2 via iTunes
    3. Next, connect your iPhone to your computer via USB cable and launch iTunes. Select your iPhone in iTunes.).

When I first connect my iphone to the computer, I am presented with a screen that prompts me to activate my iphone with at&t. When I cancel out of it, I get ” your activation has been cancelled” and that point I can only eject out my iphone. Any help will be appreciated!

  343. Salim January 27, 2009 at 8:47 am #
I got some hint from the above and then I successfully completed unlocking .. Thank you!

  344. Jackie January 27, 2009 at 11:33 am #

Well I did it. Wasn’t very hard. My only problem is that I lost all my apps along with other things. I guess my iphone did not back up properly. Kinda upset because I was trying to avoid this but…. Just make sure your phone is backed up properly.

Hey simon, i have read each & every comment but i still need a nod from ur side before i actually proceed.
I have 2g iphone firmware 1.1.14 jailbroke & unlocked using ziphone done by myself.. & now i feel i have waited a long time to upgrade my iphone to 2.2

BUT i have few queries after checking all comments…
    1. Should i keep sim card inside the iphone or remove it before starting the process?
    2. Should i uninstall all the applications which i installed through installer before the process?
    3. can i revert back to my current firmware 1.1.14 in case something didnt work out?
    4. Will it improve battery life of my 2g iphone after upgrade? currently last just a day

I am just little uncertain … that’s all

Do I have to leave the AT&T sim card in while running this program on my Iphone or do I put my T-Mobile sim card?

  355. Simon Ng January 29, 2009 at 12:22 am #

    1. I suggest you to keep the SIM card inside the iPhone.
    2. No need to uninstall the application, but all Installer applications will be removed after upgrade. You’ll have to re-install it. However, you may not be able to find the Installer application on firmware 2.2 as not every Installer applications are compatible with the new firmware. Also, Cydia (an alternative to Installer) is more popular on firmware 2.x.
    3. I haven’t tried to revert back my firmware. But from some readers’ reply, this is possible.
    4. No. Don’t expect there is a great improvement.

@Damian, I suggest you to put in T-mobile sim card during jailbreak. However, there is no concrete answer to your question. Some readers mentioned, they took out the sim card during the jailbreak process. You may browse through the comments and I believe you may find out some t-mobile users’ experience. Any other t-mobile users can help Damian?

  356. Raj January 29, 2009 at 6:55 pm #

@simon, should i keep AT&T (original) SIM card or the one i am currently using (different carrier) during the process? BTW i m in India…

    Hey Simon….

  363. DARWIN615 January 31, 2009 at 2:25 am #

Tmobile Users, this worked for me!!

    Erin. Post # 76
    “Everything seemed to work smoothly.”
However, after the whole process was done, I inserted my sim card and my iPhone displayed this message:”Different sim card detected, please connect to iTunes.” I connected, and iTunes told me that they did not support my t-mobile carrier. Nothing seemed to go wrong, though! What has happened?

This is exactly what happened to me the first time I went through this unlock process and I was starting to worry.
Note: I had an AT&T SIM card in the phone during this first try at unlocking the phone.

What worked for me was putting the Tmobile SIM card in before the jailbreak process, I put my Tmobile SIM card in right after step 5 where the phone is restored to 2.2 firmware and before step 7.

SO, restore the iphone to 2.2 firmware as seen up to step 5. After this process is complete stick your Tmobile SIM card in and launch Quickpwn 2.2 and follow the steps provided in this guide. It worked beautifully for me. BIG thanks to SimonBlog for putting this up and the iPhone Dev Team for developing Quickpwn.

Hopefully this will help some people and if someone has already posted something like this, then I don’t care because I didn’t read through all the comments.

hey, i have a question… it says that i successfully done the process with quikpwn 2.2 but then again, it says no service and wouldn’t recognize any sim? Plus I’ve tried to download bootneuter and my iphone 2g hangs up everytime I open it, making me unable to access it at all… What should I do?

  371. Stef February 2, 2009 at 4:26 am #

Hello I have a slight problem with unlocking an iphone 2g 16gb on software version 2.2.1. I updated to 2.2.1 with itunes and followed all instructions with quickpwn 2.5. The problem I have is: Iphone shows T-Mobile sim, which is correct, but I cannot make or receive phone calls or send and receive sms. It says call forwarding active…and a voice mail. When I call the voice mail service it doesn’t work. When I add the simcard into another phone, there is no voice mail. When I go into the phone settings it says call forwarding active – forwarding to “error” and I cannot move the slider. I can’t do anything within the phone settings. Everything is greyed out. I added an orange sim into the iphone to see if it recognises it, but it shows “no service”…any other sim card doesn’t work either. I tried unlocking with a simcard in the phone and also no simcard in the phone. Both times it didn’t work. I unlocked many iphones and this is the first one that doesn’t work. This phone has been previously activated with O2 on a contract, but the owner then gave me the phone as a present. I really don’t know what else to do. Please let me know…and many thanks.
I also downgraded it to software version 2.2, and tried to unlock it, but no luck.
    Cheers Stef

I get the message “different SIM installed, connect to itunes” after doing a jailbreak with Quickpwn.

The phone works fine if I replace the Orange SIM with my O2 SIM. It has installed Cydia, which seems to work, though I do not yet know what it is supposed to do.

Iphone 2G, latest upgrade as of Feb 1st 2009

    What am I doing wrong??????

I jailbroke an 8GB 2G U.S. I-phone to use it in the UK on with Orange Sim on a contract. The jailbreak worked fine and everything appeared to be fine using version 2.2. However after several weeks of trying to get on-line using GPRS I can not get it to work. I can surf great using wifi but not get online at all apart from this. I have entered all the Orange network setting combinations I can find but to no avail! If there a problem with this as other users appear to have made it work??

Any help or things to try would be great, as I have been desparately been trying to get this to work for 5 weeks now….

  377. RJ February 4, 2009 at 6:40 am #

I started the process by downloading thse files and I clicked SHIFT+Restore and selected the iphone firmware file from itunes. It displayed error message “An unknown error occured (1403).”
I cannot beyond this point. However, I have tried without this step and with quickpwn, and it didnt work. Am I doing anything wrong?

    Thanks for the help.

this is regarding the “different sim card” problem that many people are having.

alright i posted a comment earlier. comment number 366.

that time i unlocked an 8gb 2g iphone. i upgraded to a 16gb iphone and tried to unlock/jailbreak the new phone. it wouldn’t work! i was mad as fack because i was thinking it would go smoothly and the stupid “different sim card message” wouldn’t go away. well i did some more research and i ran across a post by “Willoughby” in this thread. post number 42.

    His method works!

“1. I restored the iphone with the 2.2 firmware downloaded from this site(with no Sim inserted)
    2. After restoration, you’ll be asked to install valid sim and connect to itunes so the phone can be activated.Close itunes and Install the DESIRED sim(in my case tmobile).
    3. Follow the quickpwn process and Voila!!”

SIMON you should include this in your steps to unlocking/jailbreaking. i know it would help a lot of people.

    • Simon Ng February 13, 2009 at 7:48 am #

@khalid khan, you’re right. For iPhone 3G, firmware 2.2.1 will also upgrade the baseband. And presently, yellowsn0w (the unlock solution for iPhone 3G) does not support this baseband version. So, if you’re targeting to unlock iPhone 3G, please stay with firmware 2.2. Don’t upgrade to firmware 2.2.1!

I successfully unlocked and jail broke my iphone on a 2.1 version with QuickPwn.. just recently I reseted my phone and now I can’t seem to run QuickPwn on any of my computers. Home computer is saying this file may be unsafe so windows has blocked access (I don’t know how to allow access, it doesn’t give that option). On my work computer it says “QuickPwn has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.” I have re downloaded QuickPwn2.1 and tried 2.2 as well. In all cases I’m having the same issue.
    Please help!

    Hi Simon,
Thanks a lot for the great work….
I had a 1.1.3 iphone classic, and I used Itunes 7.6 to do the job, and it was great. Well, I lost my apps from the previous installer, but the upgrade was worth it. I’ll try to re-download them if I can.

    Thanks a lot!!!!!

  414. chillum February 17, 2009 at 4:11 am #

This worked out fine with my upgrade from 1.1.4 to a 2.2.1.
I would like to say flawless but there was a hiccup. The initial firmaware load through itune completed but failed with an error E something so I did not see a step 6 screen but saw an image with a USB cable connect to itunes and the ability to dial a emergency number. I went ahead with step 13 (goofed up a few times) but eventually it worked out. Thank you making the instructions available.
BTW I use the Airtel service in India and the phone seems to be working without any issues so far.

i’ve install the itunes 8.0 it ask me to upgrade my iphone 2g to 2.2.1 firmware, by using windows vista the mission was completed & it was installed successfully, then i tried to install cydia by using quickpwn 2.2 but it stop responding & closed by windows, here my iphone was not recognised by my computer any more,
now i try to put it in dfu mode or restore mode, the quickpwn close with not responding while the itune start installing the firmware into the iphone till 15 minutes i c an error 1601 or 1604 & some times 2002

thanks for the link thats what did the trick.

If you can’t load QuickPwn then look back at RICCI post at the top or

just go to this link and download and then it should work…

    .Net Framework Download

@Tabare, it doesn’t work for iPod Touch 2G for now. Hopefully, the next version of QuickPwn can jailbreak it.

    What a perfect Guide!!!!!

I bought an unlocked iphone almost 2 yrs back. Since then I never tried to come out of firmware Ver 1.0.2. Though I have read hundreds of Jailbreaking & unlocking procedures on web, it never gave me the confidence to upgrade my phone.

Your guide was just perfect and worked like Magic and now I’ve upgraded my phone to 2.2.1 (thanks for your additional notes for that).

    Thanks a million!!!

  457. Eddie March 8, 2009 at 2:31 pm #

    hi Simon & bloggers,
I upgraded 2G 1.1.4–>2.2 flawlessly, thanx to u all. However, wi-fi is now very weak or drops-out and sadly can’t SCP nor get goodies from Cydia/Installer.
If I try to update Cydia/Installer sources, I get ‘repos’ sources not contactable with POSIX: operation timed out. I’m sure Saurik, BigBoss & ModMyi repos are online.
I’ve tried disabling wi-fi; enabling but m not successful.
Any suggestions/opinions on this would b much appreciated.

    • Simon Ng March 9, 2009 at 8:07 am #

@Eddie, sometimes, it’s normal even you got POSIX timed out error in Cydia. I’m not too sure why your wifi signal is weak. It may proabably due to your wireless router. Or are you connecting to the right wireless network? Sometime, your iPhone may pick up a wrong wireless network. Also, one more thing you can try is to reset the network settings of your iPhone. Hope it helps.

  458. Tufa March 9, 2009 at 6:22 pm #

Hi all, First I’d like to thank Simon & DEV team for all their efforts. Second, for all those who get stuck in quickpwn at step 13 (Waiting for iphone to connect in recovery mode) all you should do is move the folder you’re working in from the desktop to any other directory. & ppl pleeeeeeeeeeaaase! read the feedbacks before you post your problems, some problems were posted here & answered TOO MANY TIMES!!

  460. Nico March 12, 2009 at 5:02 am #

Hi all, I’ve downloaded QuickPwn 225-2 from every mirror that’s located on the quickpwn site.
But I just can’t run QuickPwn, I receive the message that it has stopped working.
I’m running Windows Vista, I have the newest version of .net framework, I’ve tried a lot of things but none of them work.
    Can somebody help me?

  461. Yessser March 12, 2009 at 5:20 am #

Just did this successfully for the second time. It’s straightforward. I’m now operational on T-mobile. I didn’t have an AT&T sim card, thus I had to go into restore mode (hold down power and home for about 5 seconds, then continue holding down home for another 10) first to bypass the itunes message stating that I didn’t have a sim card.

    Good Luck

  462. Jay March 12, 2009 at 9:01 am #

You’re the man Simon!, thanks for the tutorial. For those who wonder if it works with t-mobile, it works just fine for me.

Thank you so much Somin!! You have no idea how much pain and agony you have helped ease. I made sure I read this forum twice and understood exactly how to do it before I jalibreaked and unlocked my brand new iphone 2g (got it as a replacement for my old one). Worked like a cinch, my phone was unlocked and working on my T-Mobile sim in less than 15 mins. Appreciate it buddy!

  467. Shobhit March 15, 2009 at 4:32 pm #

    Thanks very much Simon.
I had a unlocked & jailbreaked v1.1.2 2G iphone, I used restore using iTunes 8.0.2. The iphone firmware was upgraded to 2.2.1, however the phone was locked (did not recognize my carrier).
I used the above process and within half hour my iPhone is up a running, with no issues at all and with the latest firmware version 2.2.1 and softwares (App store etc)…
Also, my contacts, photos (taken from iPhone) are all restored using the standard functionality of iTunes.

I ran through the entire process and it said it was successful. But now when I plug my iphone into itunes it says that the sim is not supported. On my phone itself, it shows the network as Tmobile and it shows that I have a voicemail, but it’s at the Emergency call screen and I can’t get it off of there. Someone help please!

  470. Raj March 18, 2009 at 4:54 am #

    Hi Jeannie..

Try to do the steps 7 through 15 and make sure @ every step process matches as shown in the screen shots and messages. Sometimes things might go wrong @ step 13 if not alert.

  473. JEDDDD March 18, 2009 at 7:05 pm #

zobi, not sure what the 1403 is. But whenever mine went bad i would relax, go back and erase everything, start over, follow the step to the t, download all the stuff again. And everything would always work out. BTW leave the sim in. Let us know how it goes. In Simon we trust.

  474. ConorD March 18, 2009 at 10:52 pm #

Did the process, it worked perfectly fine but now when I sync with iTunes it’s saying that my software is too old and I need to create a “New iPhone” before restoring my data. When in Settings-General-About it says I’m on Version 2.1

    Wondering what I did wrong.

@zobi, for 1403 error, that means the IPSW is corrupted. Please download the firmware file again.

zobi, to tell ya the truth i had problems with 2.2.1 so i dropped back to 2.2 and everything has been fine. And like Simon says, re download everything make sure the number match and give it another go. P.S. Hey Simon can we get a page break or something? Scrolling all the way done here on my iPhone is no fun.

Hi, I am in a bit of trouble. I am trying to unlock the iphone 2g but have just downloaded itunes 8.1 today. Now I don’t know how to get past the first step as it asks me whether I have an AT&T account or make a new account. I am with Tmobile. Please advise!

    • Simon Ng March 22, 2009 at 12:06 am #

@yhn, did you follow the instructions from step 1 of this guide? After you complete the whole process, your iPhone will be activated automatically.

Hello Simon I followed all the steps to jailbreak my phone. When I load up the quckpwn, it say please connect device via USB to continue. The device is already connected. I tried reconnecting it but it will not reconize that it is connected. I am stuck at this point I cant go any further with the process.

I am tech-savvy but this is my first iPhone unlock/jailbreak and it worked perfectly. Went from 1.1.3 unlocked/jailbroken to 2.2.1 unlocked/jailbroken. Just need to follow the instructions CAREFULLY and follow Darwin’s special instructions in commeNt #400 above. Note that, in step 10, you must explicitly click the “Unlock phone” checkbox – it is not pre-selected. And to be safe, connect the iPhone directly to a motherboard USB port, not to a downstream USB hub. REMEMBER TO DO AN INITIAL BACKUP IN ITUNES OF IPHONE-SPECIFIC DATA THAT IS NOT STORED ELSEWHERE (PHONE NUMBERS, NOTES, ADDRESSES, PICTURES, ETC.) BEFORE YOU START – I didn’t and I lost all that data.

    Hi Simon…

I’ve followed all the steps above… i tried bout 5 times already… and i’m sure theres no steps missed..

the problem is… my iphone 2G 8Gb sucessfully unlocked.
It could detect my provider etc…
But i still can’t open 3rd party applications, it can be installed, but when i tried to open it there’s always “the application “****” cannot be opened”

is that means that my iphone only got unlocked, but not jailbroken ?

    help… almost desperate here…

No.. I mean in cydia i installed installous, then install 3rd party application / games
but every applications cannot be opened… it always says cannot open..

I use iphone 2g 8gb, using firmware 2.2.1, then in cydia already install mobileinstallation

haven’t tried to install from appstore… will do it now… tell u soon bout the result

  496. Johny April 2, 2009 at 2:52 am #

    hi simon..

    it works !!!!

The solution is: u have to install at least 1 application downloaded from applestore, to make other cracked application to work…

What Happens to me is :
I follow all the steps above, installing firmware 2.2.1, then in cydia i install mobileinstallation, and install installous
then after i download & install few application from installous, it always says the application cannot be opened.

    The Solution is:
install any free application downloaded from applestore, then afterwards open the application, suddenly the screen went white, and looks like the iphone is hang…. then i try to hard reset, and after it reload….. viola….. all the programs include the cracked application now can be opened..

Thanks a lot Simon… i found ur last comments to be so useful…

The problem I had was the damn BL-39.bin and BL-46.bin on my first download was incomplete. I downloaded the .bin files again..and did the jailbreak/unlock again …and its working now….Thanks simon for the unlock guide….. now i can SLEEP
