Complete Guide: Jailbreak iPhone 2.2 (2G/3G) using PwnageTool [Updated for firmware 2.2.1]

by Simon Ng on November 25, 2008

With the release of firmware 2.2 and PwnageTool 2.2.1 for iPhone jailbreak, now I have updated the jailbreak guide for firmware 2.2 using PwnageTool. I want to cut it short and go straight to the jailbreak procedures.

But before you read on and take action to jailbreak your iPhone, please note that:

  • This jailbreak guide is for PwnageTool (Mac Only)
  • You can use this guide to jailbreak & unlock iPhone 2G (the 1st generation iPhone)
  • You can use this guide to jailbreak iPhone 3G (Please note jailbreak only. No unlock yet!)
  • If you’re using the latest models of Macbook / Macbook Pro / Macbook Air, I suggest you to seek other older models to do the jailbreak. There is an issue to put your iPhone into DFU mode on these laptop models.

Update: This jailbreak guide is now updated with procedures for firmware 2.2.1. Firmware 2.2.1 is the latest firmware update for iPhone but it’s just a bug fixes version. It’s not a must for the upgrade. But if you decide to upgrade & jailbreak using firmware 2.2.1, please use PwnageTool 2.2.5 instead.

Ready? Let’s get started.

Preparation for the upgrade

1. First, make sure you have upgraded to iTunes version 8.0.2 and backup your iPhone data by synchronizing it with iTunes

Tip: You can download older version of iTunes here if Apple already releases a newer version of iTunes at the time you’re reading this post.

2. Download all the files including Pwnage Tool 2.2.1, bootloader and iPhone firmware 2.2 (2G / 3G)

Please use Firefox to download iPhone Firmware 2.2. Do not use Safari as by default it’ll unzip the IPSW file

For firmware 2.2.1, please download PwnageTool 2.2.5 and firmware 2.2.1 (2G / 3G) instead.

3. Launch PwnageTool_2.2.1.dmg (or PwnageTool_2.2.5.dmg) and copy “PwnageTool” to your desired folder. Also, extract bootloader to the same folder.

4. Place the iPhone firmware 2.2 file to “~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates”. If the folder does not exist, create it by yourself. However, in case the folder contains other firmware files, please delete them.

5. Finally, connect your iPhone to the dock/USB cable. Please keep connected for the whole process and close iTunes if it has been launched.

Running Pwnage Tool

6. Let’s get started the core part. Go to the folder you save PwnageTool. Click “PwnageTool” to launch it.

PwnageTool

7. Click “Expert” mode. For iPhone 2G, select “iPhone”. For iPhone 3G, please select “iPhone 3G”. Then click the arrow to continue.

Pwnage - Select iPhone

8. Next, Pwnage tool searches for the iPhone 2.2 firmware file. It may take some time to locate the file. Once completed, select the firmware file and click the blue arrow to proceed. Please note the below screenshot is for iPhone 2G. For iPhone 3G, the firmware file is “iPhone1,2_2.2_5G77_Restore.ipsw”.

For firmware 2.2.1, please use iPhone1,1_2.2.1_5H11_Restore.ipsw (iPhone 2G) or iPhone1,2_2.2.1_5H11_Restore.ipsw (iPhone 3G)

9. In PwnageTool main menu, select “General” and click the blue arrow.

In general settings, please accept the default settings. Your root partition size may be different but should be slightly over 500MB. For me, I accept the default settings and set it to 535MB. Then click the blue arrow to continue.

Note: If you are using a legitimate iPhone from official carrier (for instance, iPhone with AT&T), you will need to uncheck “Activate the iPhone”.

10. Next, select “Bootneuter” and click the blue arrow. You will be go through several configuration screens. Keep all the default settings and proceed as shown.

** For iPhone 3G, the bootneuter settings screen is grayed out.

Pwnage - Cydia Setting

Pwnage - Custom Logos Settings

11. After complete all the settings, you will go back to the main screen. Select “Build” and click the arrow to start building the custom firmware.

Pwnage - Build

** In case PwnageTool prompts you to provide the bootloader file (v3.9 / v4.6), please browse to the location that you have saved these files (BL-39.bin / BL-46.bin). You should have saved these files in step 2.

12. Accept the default filename for the custom firmware. (Of course, you can choose a better name)

13. Next, Pwnage will start creating a custom firmware file that will be used later to recover the iPhone. During the process, you will be prompted to enter your logon password.

Pwnage - Building IPSW

14. When complete, Pwnage Tool will ask you whether your iPhone has been pwned before. Okay, take note here. If you haven’t pwned your iPhone before, please Answer “No” and go directly to step 15 to put your iPhone into DFU mode.

Pwnage - Pwned before

But if you have pwned it using Pwnage tool before (say, you have followed my previous guide to upgrade to firmware 2.1 using Pwnage Tool), please Answer “Yes” here. You’ll then be prompted to close Pwnage Tool. Close it and continue and put your iPhone in recovery mode.

Tips: To put your iPhone into recovery mode, first disconnect your iPhone from USB cable and power off your iPhone. Then hold the “Home” button and connect USB cable again. Keep holding the “Home” button until you see a dock cable pointing to the iTunes icon (or yellow triangle for older version of iPhone). Now you are in recovery mode. You can go to step 18 to continue with the procedures.

Put your iPhone in DFU mode

15. Now, the game starts. Pwnage shows you some instructions to follow. You should follow exactly the instructions to put your iPhone in DFU mode. Remember timing is important!

Pwnage - DFU #1

Pwnage - DFU #2

Pwnage - DFU #3

Pwnage - DFU #4

16. By following exactly the instruction, your iPhone can enter DFU mode. In case you fail, don’t panic! It won’t brick your iPhone. I did the procedures twice when I first jailbreak my iPhone. To retry, you can just disconnect your iPhone from USB, turn on your iPhone and connect it again.

DFU mode success

DFU mode fail

17. Ok, your iPhone should appear as if it’s turned off. Don’t touch it. Quit Pwnage and go to the final procedures.

Install the Custom Firmware

What you have completed with Pwnage is you have created a custom firmware 2.2 for your iPhone. The remaining procedures are to use iTunes and install that custom firmware onto the iPhone.

18. Start iTunes and it automatically detects your iPhone is in recovery mode.

iTunes Recovery

19. Confirm “OK”. Hold down “Option” button and click “Restore”. You will be prompted to select the firmware file. Remember to select the custom firmware file.

For firmware 2.2.1, you may have firmware IPSW file with different filename.

20. Now, iTunes will start loading the firmware onto iPhone. Don’t touch anything, keep your iPhone connected. It may take several minutes to complete the process. Once complete, iTune will prompt you that it has recovered your iPhone to the default factory settings.

21. The iPhone will then start up automatically. For first time bootup, BootNeuter will be launched to flash the baseband and unlock your iPhone. The process will take around 3-4 minutes to complete. Again, don’t touch your iPhone. Let it complete the process alone.

22. Okay, I believe everything is smooth. You should see your iPhone come back with firmware 2.2 (look at the version field)

23. Finally, you can sync back all your data using iTunes.

What version of iPhone firmware are you using?

Excellent write up. a small error on step #2:

2. Download all the files including Pwnage Tool 2.2.1, bootloader and iPhone firmware 2.1

should be firmware 2.2, but i’m sure everyone sorta knew that.

hey do you guys think that if windows users were to use a custom made firmware and just use pwnage using that file we too would get the benefit of the upgrade while keeping the downgraded baseband for the 3g .. What do you guys think?!?

Hi Simon,

Do you know the fastest way to bring back applications from cydia or appstore after an upgrade? or should I reinstall the apps all over again?

Reply

11 Simon Ng November 26, 2008 at 11:31 pm

Sherwin, for App Store applications, you can sync them back to iTunes before upgrade. Later after upgrade, you can sync back to iPhone.

For Cydia application, you may try AptBackup that I have covered in this post.

The 2.1 jailbreak instructions for QuickPwn 2.2 works just fine.

Make sure you upgrade to the latest version of iTunes first, oh and make sure you have a backup so you can restore your apps and settings if you so wish.

I had the same problem as Dave until I changed the size of the partition up from 500MB to 537MB. After that the build went smoothly. However, when I put the phone in DFU mode and try to restore with the custom ipsw, I get a failure. I’m restoring to original now, but I can’t seem to jailbreak anymore. Quickpwn was what I used first and it “haz Fail!” too. I just restored to factory and now I don’t have it activated. This is getting tense. I am rebuilding with 535MB partition size now. Any other suggestions? I’m on a 2G phone.

Reply

26 Rick December 6, 2008 at 1:24 pm

Well, 537MB is too much. Don’t be lazy and use the slider to get close, punch in the 535MB and it seems to be working. I have seen the pwnapple already.

Sigh… No that didn’t work either. I can’t restore my iPhone. I get error 1600 from iTunes and on the help page at Apple, that error is not in the list. I see 1601 through 1604 and 1608 and others, but not my error. What’s going on?

And if i want upgrade to fw 2.2 using pwntool 2.2 (mac) should i leave my sim card in iphone or upgrading without sim card inside it?
Too many questions in my head, i’m freshy with iphone3g. Guys plz help…!

AS, I guess you’re using some kinds of unlock SIM solution (e.g. TurboSIM) for your iPhone 3G. The iTunes sync problem may not be related to your firmware version. Upgrading to firmware 2.2 may not solve the issue.

Same problems I’m afraid, I have a 3g on firmware 2.2 with baseband 2.2.8 which I have jailbreaked using Pwnage and also use a RebelSim and can get no signal.

If I insert the O2 sim I get full bars on a roaming network Jersey Telecom (I live in the Channel Islands) and my 3g Sony W890 gets full bars on my home network Airtel Vodafone when next to the iPhone so there is no network strength issues.

I had the phone working yesterday and I have no idea how and used it at work when I connected to different towers and last night had a will this still work if I turn it off moment and guess what it doesn’t!

I have tried two full restores and nothing, any ideas anyone?

Jack, once you have baseband 2.28 there is no going back and this has caused a great number of problems for legitimately unlocked and illegitimately unlocked iPhones as per my comment needing help!

To remove the pineapple logo you have two choices, to undertake a factory restore which will reset your phone to factory settings but keep baseband 2.28 or if you want to use Pwnage re jailbreak the iPhone select Expert Mode and you have the choice of whether you have the pineapple logo or not.

Hi, I followed the instructions for the 3g iphone. I couldn’t put it into DFU mode, and then it had that “do you want to try again” screen, then itunes launched, and the phone went into recovery mode. I recovered my phone and reinstalled my apps. But I’d like to jailbreak it. Help please!
2 things: 1) A few months ago, I had previously done the jailbreak for FW2.1 and returned my iphone to its original state–ie no more jailbreak. Then I upgraded to FW2.2 w/ no problems. 2) I’m using a powerbook OS X 10.4.11

Reply

51 Simon Ng December 15, 2008 at 1:31 am

@Alex & KT,

For error 21, did you put into DFU mode properly? When your iPhone is in DFU mode, the screen is completely blank, just like when the iPhone is turned off.

@jack, you can simply uncheck the “Neuter Bootloader” checkbox in step 10. This will skip the unlock process.

I have the iPhone 3G running 2.2 and I tried this on a mac running 10.4 and what a mess. Steps 9-13 in the pineapple program never came around and it spit out some software. I followed the directions which installed the software on the iphone. It took about an hour. The phone didn’t become a brick. It became an ipod touch. No apps, no photo’s, no phone calls (in or out) no G3 internet, no SMS text message… The only thing that was different (besides it not working) was a pineapple appeared instead of the apple logo. It took me another 2 hours to get rid of this crap so i can use it as a phone again. What is the advantage of this jailbreak?

I have iphone 3G, when it’s 2.1, I jailbroke it, but I accidentally upgraded it to 2.2 using iTune. Now I want to jailbreak it again, At step 14, which should I choose ? Have jail break or not? I actually tried both, none works. If I chose Yes, I went to recovery mode, choose the restore file, iTune reports an error 21. If I chose No, I always get a ‘Failed DFU’.

What should I do?

Thanks,

68 nikon December 19, 2008 at 2:40 pm

Neil, I think I can answer your question because I have made it that far but… I’m curious to see if your 3G with 2.2 will work. Mine did not. Remember where you save the custom firmware that Pwnage made. When it prompts you to… hold down the power button and the home button for ten seconds. Then only release the power button and continue holding the home key. iTunes will load and say something like it detected a iphone in recovery mode. Click OK. In the itunes window you will see “restore” Hold down the “option” key before clicking restore. When the dialog box comes up browse to where you saved the Pwnage file (mine was in the desktop) and restore using that. Once it loads the iphone should restart and show the pineapple. I took this as a sign that it worked but like I said before, the rest was down hill for me after this. Let me know if you make something more than an ipod.

HELP! I get an error when I start iTunes after I put my iPhone 2G (ver2.2) in DFU mode. I get a “Successful” message in pwnage. The error message is: “An iPod has been detected, but it could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the iPod, then try again. An unknown error occurred (2001). What do I need to do? (I only want to jailbreak it, not unlock it.)

Hi simon,

I succesfully did all the steps above… but when I put a different sim card it shows this – “Different DIM detected Please connect to iTunes” an I did that but then iTunes said the sim card that I’m currently using right now is not supported. I’m got a 2G. I thought the instructions here are suppose to unlock my phone?

Thanks for your help!!!

Hi,

When using the tool, it won’t recognize my 2nd gen iPod Touch as being connected via USB. I’ve tried putting it recovery mode, then it recognizes it, but it doesn’t seem to be able to complete the process to go into DFU mode. Is this a known issue?

Thanks,
Nick

@eggz, did you put the SIM card during the jailbreak process? For unlock, I suggest you to use a different SIM card and perform the procedures again.

@Nick, PwnageTool currently does not support 2nd generation iPod. Please do not use it.

@Pahlachander, you really make me nervous as this’s a birthday gift for your father :-) It’s a little bit tough for your question. I think you can still put it in DFU mode and see if it works. If it doesn’t, you can try to skip that process and put into recovery mode. There should be no harm to try the process twice. Good luck.

Need help, trying to quickpwn on windows xp, the process goes smoothly all the way until the phone is supposed to reboot into the newly jailbroken state, the phone never finishes booting. It will sit on the apple boot screen for 15-20 minutes and then reset and again fail to boot. I’ve tried resetting, I’ve tried this whole process with my iphone running 2.1 and then later 2.2 (with the newer quickpwn). I’ve tried it, restored it, and tired again at least a dozen times. Any suggestions would be awesome

Guys, Does anyone has this problem:
I have the 2G first generatio iPhone 4GB. I upgraded it as instructed above to 2.2 and everything works fine. However, few days after, the phone would simply not come back on from sleep mode (black screen). The only way to turn it back on is to push HOME and SLEEP button for 10 secs (hard restart). Does anyone know why this is happening. I tried everything possible, uninstalling apps, turning off autolock, etc. Nothing seems to work. Any Ideas??? Please help…

I think apple has beat us all with the 2.2 update. I have seen tons of iPhone 2,3g with jailbreak, even unlocked ones (with a little card you slide in under your sim card) but they are all running 2.1. All the boot leg cell shops that jailbreak phones for $40 won’t touch ones with 2.2. I have yet to see a 2,3g with the 2.2 work correctly after jailbreak. If someone reading this has done jailbreak on a 3g with 2.2 and has a working phone please post but until then I have to believe the geeks at Apple are reading this “high-five’n” each other.

@outkasted82, PwnageTool (for Mac) should able to jailbreak iPhone 3G 2.2 and also keep an option for future unlock, according to iPhone Dev Team. But please don’t use QuickPwn. You’ll risk any unlock option in future if you jailbreak your iPhone 3G with QuickPwn. But there is no 100% guarantee that jailbreak is problem-free. So, take care and good luck.

@nikon, thanks for your information!

Hi Simon,

I’m on a Macbook pro and the Pwange tool is not working…. I have the 1.1.4 firmware jailbreaked with Pwnage tool 1.1, and when I put the Iphone in recovery mode and open the Itunes to restore it, it gives a msg asking to check for updates instead (wich will lock my iphone, I presume…) How can I restore it via Itunes when I get this msg?? Even if I try to put in DFU mode instead of going straight to recovery, it doens’ work on my macbook.

Any sugestions?

thanks

fabraza, you can just answer “No” when you see the “check for update” message. iTunes will ignore the update.

@Charlie, probably you did not put the iPhone into DFU mode properly. For other causes and possible resolution for the error, you can refer to this post for details.

@SamBass, what’s the size of root partition? Try to increase the size of root partition to around 600MB if 535MB doesn’t work for you. Also, remember you should use expert mode instead of simple mode in PwnageTool. Hope this can resolve the error.

Simon,
Thx for the advice. However it did not work. Smae result. I increased the root partition size to 600Mb and then to 625mb. still ‘Sry I haz fail”

Shld I use the IPSW file that was created when I upgraded to 2.2, as opposed to the one downloaded when I downloaded PwnageTool?

Hi,
I had a Jailbroken Iphone 3g version 2.1.

I downloaded 2.2 on itunes thinking i was over the jailbroken bit looked up various guides etc to see if any problems. Seemed to be every1 thought it was easy and no worries.

Went to install 2.2 and the itunes spat out a 1604 error..Iphone not working.

Researched the error found out needed dfu mode worked that out finally black screen constant is very important for this mode. went to install 2.2 and itunes spat out a 2001 error. Researched this error and found out not many people had worked it out.

Some guy said to install an old version of itunes said he fixed it on itunes 6.

Gave itunes 7 ago same problem.

Tryed 6 and the iphone wouldnt even be recognised at all in dfu mode.

Reinstalled itunes 8.0.2

Then just tryed a standard install of 2.2 using just the normal restore thing with the itunes usb diagram on it.

This finally worked. and now have an iphone that works! however lost 8.0.2 library and lots of stuff etc…not happy bout that buy happy i have my iphone back…

Good Luck

hi Simon,

i just upgraded my iphone 3G from 2.0.2 to 2.2, and done jailbreak on 2.2. Everything works fine now. i’m able to see all my old Apple store apps (i did not do a restore after jailbreak), and download 3party apps via Cydia. However I haven’t do a sync again using iTunes after jailbreak, just want to double check that iTunes sync after jailbreak will not remove my old apple store apps, and other jailbreak apps?

And all i have to is to disable iTunes upgrade? And it is fine to “sync Applications” using iTunes?

Thanks.

I am using the latest iTunes and latest firmware on the iphone. I am running everything on the new MacBook Pro and MacBook (leopard).

I had it fixed and now it is unlocked with 1.1.4 version

do you think i can upgrade my iphone successefully without any mistakes like last time???

Now I really could use your help.

Related to my earlier post, I retried and this time held both the on and home button to turn on, then, was able to “turn off device” and powered off and proceeded through the timed sequence. The timed screens led me through this process.

I successfully reached the “Successfully entered DFU mode!” screen.

Then reached the screen, “Itunes must check the iphone software update server to identify this device” “To enable automatic checking for updates, go to the General pane of Itunes preference and turn on “Check for updates automatically” came up. I debated if I should continue, but clicked “OK”.

The next screen was “Itunes has detected an iphone in recovery mode. You must restore this iphone before it can be used with Itunes.” I clicked “OK”

Then I navigated to the Iphone 1,1_2.2_5G77_Custom_Restore.ipsw under the Iphone software updates that was under itunes and in the library.

It took a long time (10 minutes or more) to restore the software on the phone.

When it completed, the iphone displayed the dreaded “emergency unlock screen. Then, of course, the itunes gave me the only option to do through the Apple registration method of activating the phone.

Can I still get this 2G iphone jailbroken and unlocked somehow. Do I just start over from square one and download all the software again. Do I still indicate at the appropriate time that this phone has not been pawned.

By the way this phone was previously operating well with the 1.4.1 iphone software and was jailbroken using the ZiPhoneOSX method and am syncing with an IMac, IGhz PowerPC G4, running 10.5.6 with the latest Itunes software.

I appreciate your help leading people through this and look foward to your suggestions.

hi there,
love the jailbreak stuff. my first time doing it and it’s way fun.

question though: i run this tutorial on my macbook G4 with my american AT&T 2G iPhone and it went smoothly. Then I tried to put another SIM card, from Norway (i’m in Norway), in and the iPhone tells me to connect to iTunes. Then iTunes says I must use the original SIM. The iPhone was unlocked so why can’t I use a SIM from another country?

@Spencer, during the jailbreak and unlock process, you need to put in the SIM card from Norway instead of that from AT&T. Now, you can try this:

1. Go to Cydia and download Bootneuter
2. Pull out the AT&T SIM card and change to the one from Norway
3. Launch Bootneuter application and unlock the iPhone again

Give the above a shot. It may resolve your issue.

I tried all kinds of builds and played with several options in PWnage tool. I have problems reconstructing which one finally recovered but I give it a try here:

- Build a Customer_Restore from 2.2 with the options:
– General: enable baseband update
– Neuter: update bootloader, downgrade to 3.9, unlock, autodelete

with that kit I was able to restore it with DFU mode (I believe). Well I guess it doesn’t really matter which mode I used …. I have the feeling the bootloader was the problem and the downgrade option did help it.

may be this helps.

@KRIS, if you’re planning to unlock iPhone 3G, you can check out this post about using yellowsn0w for the unlock. To unlock your iPhone, you have first to use QuickPwn to jailbreak it and then download yellowsn0w to unlock the iPhone. Also, for Mac user, you’ll need to use QuickPwn instead of PwnageTool to jailbreak. You’ll find the details in that post.

After jailbreak, you’ll have Installer, Cydia and App Store installed.

hey simon,

great guide! worked for me up until i successfully entered the DFU mode. then when i tunes automatically launched i got the (2001) error. Exactly the same as for Anthony..

my phone’s a 2G, on 1.1.4, and previously both unlocked and jailbroken. and i’m using an older macbook pro (1 y.o.)
i tried building both with and without bootneuter, but i got the same issue in itunes…

ideas? thanks a lot for the guide! appreciate any help you might have.

@Peter, as you’ve jailbroken the iPhone before, you do not need to put the iPhone into DFU mode. That is, answer “No” in step 4. And, follow the procedures in “Tips” section to put it into recovery mode instead.

I have an my older Iphone 2G from when I upgraded to the 3G, I decided to jailbreak this phone only. It was running firmware 2.1, so I upgraded it via Itunes to 2.2 last night. I do not have a sim card in it, as its not a currently active phone. I was basically using it like an Ipod Touch in v2.1. Since the upgrade I get a message on the phone saying I need a sim card to activate it. Can’t get past this screen on the phone. Can I just jailbreak it now with Quickpwn for Mac without a sim card or do I need a sim card in it? If I need one, will any AT&T sim card work? Say I pull a simcard from someone else’s AT&T phone and use it?

Thanks

Hi Simon,
I followed the steps carefully, but i got the message wrong firmware bundle selected, i reviewed your post again and finally, found this..

“If you’re using the latest models of Macbook / Macbook Pro / Macbook Air, I suggest you to seek other older models to do the jailbreak. There is an issue to put your iPhone into DFU mode on these laptop models.”

Considering this, im using latest macbook 13, is there any other workaround for this.? Thanks so much. Im having hard time to look for an answer, since i am using your advise, i decided to ask you, no other than you.

Hi,

I tied jail breaking my iphone 3G with quick pawn for MAC. I downloaded the 2.2 version and everything seamed to be working properly downloading to my MAC. I followed all the steps and after the download was completed it said that my phone will reboot. Well that was last night and I still have the pineapple on my ipone and it won’t turn on. I am trying to restore the phone to the original factory settings but when I turn off the phone and hold the home screen, I never get the yellow triangle and when I connect my phone to itunes, itunes does not recognize it so I can not even restore it on the summary page. Anyone have any ideas what else I can try? I appreciate it!! Many thanks!

How as apple relisted new version 2.2.1 when I go to Itunes its automatically tryes update me, so if I restore its will upgrade me to new version. How to stop that? Also after jailbraiking you can use the Itunes no more, its block my phone again.

Hi Simon,

Excellent description of the procedure.
I have a 2G Iphone running 1.1.4, it is jalibroken and unlocked with Ziphone/mac.

I want to upgrade it to 2.2 using your procedure, but I’m not so sure about the following:
- shall I check ‘activate the iphone’ in step 9?
- shall I check ‘neuter bootloder’ in step 10?
- shall I used the original sim or use my new sim from the other provider?

Thanks in advance for the clarification.

@Masha, you can now using PwnageTool 2.2.5 to jailbreak iPhone firmware 2.2.1. The jailbreak procedures are very similar to that for firmware 2.2. To download, PwnageTool 2.2.5, please check out this post.

@Hector, you can simply follow the procedures mentioned in this post and put in your new sim from other provider in the iPhone.

13. Next, Pwnage will start creating a custom firmware file that will be used later to recover the iPhone. During the process, you will be prompted to enter your logon password.

i have no indea which password and user name to put on i tried everything and i couldnt get through please help !!!!

145 Simon Ng February 10, 2009 at 7:57 am

@Mimo, it’s the password for logging in your Mac OS or the admin account. It’s required for PwnageTool writing the custom firmware into the file system.

Hi Simon, hope u had a nice trip… Great blog by the way, i followed this instructions to upgrade my iphone 2G from 1.4.4 to 2.2 and it worked, smoothly (making my iphone my new favorite toy); very nicely detailed, it helped me and read it helped others as well, thanks.
But i’m having some kind of trouble now, hope u can help me with it (or anybody else who would read this). For some reason the mobilephone application is not working, it shuts down by itself a few secs after opened, not being able to use the dialing pad or check missed calls or do calls or nothing related to that app. Im not sure what happened, but i can tell u that after i upgraded, not long ago btw, i went into a downloading frenzy (i guess i was excited with my new toy! hehe) and probably i dl something that blocked that app and the worse thing is that i’m not sure which one would it be. I’ve asked around and been advised to do the whole upgrade(to 2.2.1)/jailbreak/restore process again but i don’t want to, is there any way i could fix this problem without having to do that?
Sorry for the long message and i’d appreciate lots any help.. thanks again.

I’ve tried countless “rebootings”, “respringings”, even uninstalling apps and erasing weird files looking for the one that could be causing the problem, but nothing works so far (most prob because i don’t know which one is it!).. any advised is welcome..

Ok, well I figured this out for myself. I was able to get this to work with 10.5.6 thanks to another tutorial found whilst browsing.

This has saved me £500 on a new iphone!

Maybe you should update the tutorial and add a link to a site that explains how to use this method on 10.5.6. I’m sure a lot of people have the latest update from Apple and they’d just believe it wouldn’t work when there is an easy way around it!

Anywayz, I’m babbling on so I will go now…

Very greatful for this tutorial :)

Here’s what information I can provide at the moment (meaning, I’m at work and don’t know what Mac OS or iTunes versions I have installed, but I don’t believe her Mac is 10.5.6).
Here’s the story: About 2 months ago I Jailbroke my girlfriends iPhone to version 2.2.1, no problems (using PwnageTool 2.2.5). I used a USB HUB just be on the safe side. About a week ago, she was messing around in Winterboard applying numerous themes and icons and such and managed to place her phone in an infinite reboot cycle (the apple logo, the one vibrate, over and over). At the time I was unable to get it out of this reboot cycle and did a restore to the factory 2.2.1 version. Yesterday I attempted to redo the jailbreak but had no success. Everything works fine up to the point of restoring the custom 2.2.1 firmware via iTunes. I first tried in DFU mode (since the phone was no longer Jailbroke) and received error 1600. I then attempted in restore mode and received error 21. Not sure what the proper step should be at this point. One thing I’m not sure of since I’m not a Mac user per se, after opening PwnageTool a container folder or drive is created with the PwnageTool app in it, do I need to move that file, say to the desktop? I don’t recall doing that the first time I Jailbroke her phone.
It has crossed my mind that maybe I need to reboot her Mac and try, which I will attempt when I get home from work. If that doesn’t work I’m going to attempt the Jailbreak on my Windows XP machine using QuickPwn.

I appreciate anyone with suggestions or “the answer” to get this Jailbreak done.

170 NachoB March 20, 2009 at 10:28 pm

Correction in a part of my post above: where I said I attempted in restore mode I received error 21, I meant I attempted by placing the iPhone in [strong]recovery[/strong] mode and received error 21.

I have used your instructions to jailbreak and update my 2G phone twice before and it worked like a charm. I want to upgrade now to 2.2 but have a few questions:
1. I just bought a new MacBook Pro, will it work on it?
2. The iTunes version I have is 8.1. I tried to download the older version like you say in the instructions but it’s an .exe file, it doesn’t open with mac.
What can I do?

hi again
quick follow up the issue for those who got this error message: “An iPod has been detected, but it could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the iPod, then try again. An unknown error occurred (2001)”

I read on another blog that almost all MacBooks can give this error message, and it suggested plugging the iphone into a USB hub as a work-around. Borrowed a basic hub from a friend, and gave it a try. With the iPhone attached to the hub, iTunes didn’t even recognize there was a device attached. tried 3x, no dice. Read on another blog that i needed a powered USB hub. oh boy. As a last ditch effort, i unplugged the phone from the hub, and tried plugging it into the Macbook USB drive directly, while the USB hub was plugged into the other port. BINGO, iTunes recognized iPhone in recovery mode and Pwnage worked its magic. truth is, i think it was more serendipity than science, but whatever it was, it worked. hope this helps

I just managed to upgrade my 2G iPhone to 2.2 using this guide, again! After careful reading I realised that since I had already pwned my phone twice before, I didn’t need to put it in DFU mode so the “new Macbook vs. DFU” issue was moot. I also read your other post on using iTunes 8.1 and how that worked for you so I decided that I would give it a go and it worked like a charm for me as well! No hassle!

Thanks again! See you next upgrade!

@Attila, iPhone 3.0 is still in beta and will be available officially this coming summer. You shouldn’t worry about the upgrade, even you get an jailbroken iPhone. You can definitely upgrade to firmware 3.0 and jailbreak it again. But I have to warn you. Please don’t upgrade directly via iTunes. This will probably make your iPhone unjailbreakable.

@Melvin, don’t worry. You can use iTunes 8.1 to jailbreak the iPhone using the above procedures.

Hi Simon. I followed everything you wrote down here, and I was able to finish it on my second try. The first time did not work because I was not able to download the bootloader. Anyway, after the second try, my iPhone still doesn’t have the Cydia on the program list, and my phone basically looks the same as it was pre-jailbreak attempt. I dunno what had gone wrong, and I certainly need help regarding this.

I have the iPhone 3G Version 2.2.1 (followed all the changes for 2.2.1 users, as you enumerated), modem firmware: 02.30.03.

I am looking forward to your response. Thank you!

Hi Simon,
the jailbreaking process was pretty easy to follow. But I am having the same error appear. everything works my itouch is in dfu mode but then when i open itunes it says “an ipod has been detected but it cannot be identified properly. please disconnect and reconnect the ipod again. an unknown error occurred” This happens everytime even when i disconnect and reconnect and the summary box never shows! so i get really close but thats when it just stops working, what do i do>?

For all who have the doubt on MacBook Unibody.. hope this useful..
Have tried and tested on iPhone 2G, result? it worked perfectly fine… with iTunes 8.1.1, and Pwnage 2.2.5, mine has successfully updated from 2.2 to 2.2.1…

Sorry for the simple question. I followed all the steps. In step 20, below, is anything happening on the screen? Usually when there is an uploading process I see a bar or something. I am afraid that the fact that I have seen nothing for the last 10 minutes means nothing is happening. When I click on the IphoneRestore nothing starts happening. Is something happening and I just don´t see it? Thanks! And, the directions are great!

20. Now, iTunes will start loading the firmware onto iPhone. Don’t touch anything, keep your iPhone connected. It may take several minutes to complete the process. Once complete, iTune will prompt you that it has recovered your iPhone to the default factory settings.

Hi. I have a Iphone 2G with Firmware 2.2 (I made the upgrade directly from 1.1.4 and I had unlocked). Right know, My problem is put on DFU Mode because the home boton doesnt works, so I unable to complete the unlock process.

I have tried with a DFU tool and Ziphone, but doesnt work. I have tried to customize a 2.2 firmware with winpwn2.5beta2, but I get a 1066 error when I apply directly from itunes. I cannot understand, because when I apply he original firware 2.2 from apple works without problem.

Do you have some suggestion?
or
Do you know a Commvercial SW to do this unlock without use the Home botton ?

regards,
Eduardo Hdez

Help – Jailbreak wth pwnage 2.2.1 results in no service

Hi

I have a UK iphone on o2 and I want to jailbreak it only. I have firmware 2.2.1 itunes 8.2 modem firmware 2.30.

After I have followed the tutorial steps to the letter the phone starts ok and connects to my wifi network but the activation step doesn’t happen and I have no service.

I checked the boxes to install cydia and the installer app but nothing else, should I have entered something in the general settings.

I reset the network services and connected it to itunes etc but this did not resolve the issue. I retried from scratch and got the same issue.

I then tried quickpwn and that software was unable to get an internet connection even though one existed.

I have been round the internet but not found any useful posts, your help would be appreciated. In the meantime I have restored it back to factory settings.

Thanks in advance for any help

Pwning in simple mode fixed this – I think that activation needs to be unchecked in the general menu.

Having an issue, I went through the whole process, but iTunes gives me the message
“The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported.”
I am using t-mobile.
Where did I go wrong?

My phone is jailbroken (using this great guide!). What steps do I need to take to upgrade to 3.0 and still remain jailbroken? I’m assuming that I should NOT upgrade to 3.0 through iTunes, but don’t know what else to do. Thanks!

Filehippo link to iTunes 8.0.2 shouldn’t be used for MAC, this is a link to the iTunes 8.0.2 DMG file: http://support.apple.com/downloads/iTunes_8_0_2_for_Mac

Hi Simon
Few things
When I am in the recovering mode, ITunes asking me for restore and update, and I cant. I have changed the automatic update on the general tab, but the Itunes will not recover without the automatic update enable.

Another thing Itunes already has the OS 3.0, is there a Jailbreak for update for that OS?

Many Thanks

Hi Simon, I just wanted to thank you.

I first upgraded my 2G (original) 1.1.4 version Ziphone to 2.0 version with pwnage (and had to update itunes to 7.7), then I upgraded from 2.0 to 2.2 version with pwnage (and had to update itunes to 8.0.2).

Both upgrades went off without a hitch. The only thing that threw me off was on the 2.2 upgrade, I selected “new” phone which deleted all my contacts and calendars from the phone. But I eventually was able to figure out how to retrieve contacts and calendar them in itunes 8.0.2 in the “Info” section.

Thanks again, this was awesome! I await the 3.0 upgrade from the Dev-Team!

I’m having a problem. I have a 3G and it was running on the 3.1 firmware, but i needed to downgrade to 3.0 to jailbreak it. So i downloaded the 3.0 firmware and tried to restore it, but it keeps saying “unknown error”. Any hints or tips on what I should do?

@Julian, please check out this downgrade guide. It may help. Also, please ensure you’re using iTunes 8.2 or 9.0.
