Jailbreak Update: iPhone 2.2 Jailbreak Solution Available

by Simon Ng on November 23, 2008

The wait is over! The brilliant iPhone Dev Team has just released a new version of QuickPwn (Windows/Mac) and PwnageTool (Mac) to jailbreak iPhone 2.2 firmware. iPhone Dev Team has once again proved to Apple that any firmware update can be jailbroken.

So, for those who have already upgraded iPhone 2.2 (either accidentally or by intention), now you do not need think of ways to downgrade it back to firmware 2.1. Just go ahead to jailbreak firmware 2.2.

Before going ahead to download the new Jailbreak tool and upgrade to firmware 2.2, a few points you should note (Please read carefully):

For iPhone 3G:

  • The new version of QuickPwn or PwnageTool will NOT unlock your iPhone 3G. iPhone Dev Team is still in process to develop a solution for unlock. And, if you’re using a locked version iPhone 3G and want to unlock in future, please do NOT use QuickPwn and do not use the official IPSW or iTunes update process.
  • In other words, if you’re using iPhone 3G, the only way to have a Safe Jailbreak is to use PwnageTool (Mac only). By using QuickPwn to jailbreak iPhone 3G, you’ll not be able to unlock your iPhone 3G in future, even iPhone Dev Team develops the solution.

For iPhone 2G:

  • iPhone 2G (or 1st generation iPhone) user should have no problem with jailbreak & unlock firmware 2.2 using both QuickPwn / PwnageTool. As iPhone Dev Team mentioned, restore your iPhone 2G with iTunes, then run QuickPwn to do the magic.

For those using latest model of Macbook / Macbook Pro / Macbook Air:

  • These latest models of Macbooks have an issue with DFU mode of iPhone. Please consider to perform jailbreak on other computers.

You can download the latest version of QuickPwn/PwnageTool at below links:

QuickPwn 2.2 (for Windows)
PwnageTool 2.2.1 (for Mac)
QuickPwn 2.2 (for Mac)

The jailbreak procedures should be very similar to that we have done in firmware 2.1 (QuickPwn Procedure / PwnageTool Procedure). I will update the jailbreak & unlock guide for firmware 2.2 very soon. So, stay tuned.

Update: You can refer to the updated guide of PwnageTool to jailbreak iPhone firmware 2.2 on Mac. The guide applies to both iPhone 2G & 3G.

Update: You can refer to the updated guide of QuickPwn to jailbreak iPhone firmware 2.2 on Windows. The guide applies to iPhone 2G.

In canada on Rogers network, Using a AT&T Iphone with firmware 1.0.2 can I upgrade to jailbroken 2.2? If yes do i just follow the “jailbreak procedures you have done in firmware 2.1″? Or dI have to jump through a little more hoops since I’m using very old firmware?

@moonaz, thanks for your update. You are probably the first reader to jailbreak firmware 2.2.

@Mithun, it should be okay.

@RAv, please refer to my answer in this post.

Well 2 upgrades within a week :)

1.1.4 -> 2.1 -> 2.2

The procedure is the same as going to 2.1 with Simon’s steps. All app store apps backed up by syncing with Itunes 8.0.2 and restored after the update Easy.

On another note my wifi did not work until I restored back the last sync from iTunes. The same happened when going to 2.1.

Regards

@mithan, unzip it first than u will find the file with black pineapple icon.run that and u wont have anyproblem.and just directally upgrade to 2.2 it doesn’t matter what firmwere u r on.
note: download 2.2 from any other source rather than i tunes. and save it in the same folder as quickpwng. use i tunes 8 or higher.

I have a jailbroken 2.1 iPhone 3G.
To upgrade to 2.2, what do I do first? Do I do the QuickPwn 2.2, THEN upgrade on iTunes, or upgrade on iTunes THEN do QuickPwn 2.2???

Nevermind, I figured it out – stupid question :P
Now I just want to make sure I can save my apps – how can I do that?

@Hassan, hopefully, I’ll post the jailbreak guide for QuickPwn in these two days.

@j, you can sync the iPhone with iTunes first to backup all applications. Later after upgrade, you can restore the applications by sync it again with iTunes.

Hi,
Please help me to solve this problem!
I have a 2g iphone with a firmware of 1.1.4. I wanted to upgrade it to higher version so i could use some other kool application and i went across this instruction as aboved! Here is how I did with my Iphone
First, I dl newst version 2.2 directly from itunes apple.
After I did that, my foen was locked because i am using a tmobile sim
Then, I dl all the files that needed for jailbreaking like bootloader 3.9, 4.6, firmware 2.2_5G77 restore and a quickpwn 22
after i dl them i put them in to the same folder in desktop.
follow the instruction, i run quickpwn 22 but the blue button turn grey. It said that quickpwn need to detect my iphone in order for it to continouing the process. I recheck all the possibillity like hook the cable to diff port and also check with itunes application. and it showed that my fone is connected to itunes. I dont know what to do now! Please help or I dont have any fone to use :(

Tutorial worked great, I forgot to back-up my data before restoring to version 2.2 from j/b 2.1…so I have to start all over, but hey the upgrade worked great. My phone quit working in my j/b 2.1 version for some bizarre reason sms and incoming calls worked fine, but when I tried to dial out the phone would bring me back to the home screen. I tried many reboots but nothing seemed to work…any ideas? 2.2 works fantastic!!!

@Leyna, did you try to close iTunes and kill all iTunes processes, and launch QuickPwn again?

Hi simon,

I bought a new 2g iphone 16gb and it has a 1.1.4 firmware and all working fine, when i was trying to update it to 2.2 like what i used to do with my 8gb before, after updating and using quickpwn, a message appear “no sim card installed”.

I downloaded the quickpwn 2.2 last month ago, is there a problem with that version they released last month? the link you provided is a new version?

thanks a lot simon!

Gino, I’ve heard about the issue from some readers. But can you follow the updated guide and try the jailbreak again? Sometimes a second trial may work. You can check out the guide here.

Hey Simon, how do you do? sorry for the late update about my question, i had figured out the problem and that is when you try to use jailbreak process, DO NOT insert your simcard while jailbreaking it, otherwise it will damage your simcard i’m not yet pretty sure but i already broke 2 simcards while doing jailbreak… Hope i am correct with this and somehow may help other jailbreakers..

Thanks,
Gino

@Gino, that’s pretty strange. I think the jailbreak won’t damage the SIM card. And, it’s recommended to put in the SIM card during jailbreak and unlock process. Anyways, thanks for your info.

Hi there,

I just read through most of this post. So just to confirm, I can most definitely upgrade my 1st gen iPhone from Version 1.0.2 to 2.2? I am using the lastest version of iTunes on a new MacPro, do you think I’ll have any problems? Could someone give me a step-by-step because all this jailbreaking and hacking is all very new to me. I have no idea what the QuickPwn or Pwnage Tool all means. Please and thank you!

I have followed your instructions, have gotten to the window asking “Has you iphone been pawned before?” and clicked “NO”. ITunes launched and I closed Itunes. However, the iphone does not turn on and thus cannot “Turn off device” to proceed to the timed sequence.

I have tried this three times from the start now but cannot get past this step. Any suggestions?

I recently bought an iPhone 3G from Dubai, which was pre-installed with 2.2 and modem firmware 02.30.03. I was able to use it in Zambia (a country in Africa) with my carrier ZAIN for the past 3 months.

Unfortunately, I inadvertently fail prey to Apples suggestion to update my software to firmware 2.2.1. Inevitable, when the installation was completed, a message was displayed in iTunes that I was not using an authorized carrier, and needed to obtain a Sim from an authorized courier. I found this rather unfair, but what the heck, I found you guys.

I downloaded QuickPwn 225-2 for Windows XP, and went through the steps to successfully unlock the phone. I then installed yellowsn0w from cydia and restarted the phone. Unfortunately my carrier is still not being recognized.

Is there any solutions your team can offer to help me successfully complete the unlock of my phone?

Thanks for the commendable job you are doing.
