EasyWriter – Another iPhone Application for typing Email in landscape orientation

by Simon Ng on November 9, 2008

According to iPhone Wish List that I have mentioned about, typing email in landscape orientation is one of the top demanding features. We’re not sure when Apple will allow us to do landscape typing in email. But until such built-in feature available, you can always find alternative iPhone applications that support this feature. Earlier, we have reviewed Firemail. And now, here comes to EasyWriter. At the time I write this post, EasyWriter is the top-25 free applications in App Store.

Same as Firemail, EasyWriter allows you to type email in landscape orientation. So, you’ll have a wider keyboard to type your email. This is especially great when you’re working on a lengthy email. EasyWriter also offers other features such as:

- Automatically save your text during interruption (e.g. incoming call or go back to home screen)
- Reduce font size by pinching to show more text
- Increase font size by zooming
- Support international characters

The support of font size change is pretty awesome, even it’s considered as a minor feature. By reducing the font size, you can view more text in the same text area.

Writing a new email is easy, you can launch EasyWriter and type in the message. Then click “Send to Mail” button. EasyWriter will automatically launch Mail application with your message. And you can just send your email right away.

A little trick when replying email

However, there is a little limitation when replying email. And you have to switch between Mail and EasyWriter in order to type email in landscape mode.

1. Launch Mail and reply your email
2. Click “Home” button
3. Open EasyWriter and type your message
4. Press “Send to Mail” and the text will appear in the reply. You can then send it out.

My Wish List

Presently, EasyWriter only supports Mail application. In future, I’m grateful to see it supports landscape typing in other iPhone applications such as SMS. Of course, Apple should build this feature in later firmware release and allows every iPhone application to do landscape orientation.

I have noticed that both EasyWriter and Firemail can only use the default email account for replies. There is even a note about this in the Mail Settings “page” on the iPhone and Touch stating that emails created outside Mail will be sent from the default account. Unfortunate. Hopefully someone comes up with a fix or workaround for this for those who have more than one Mail account.
