iPhone 2.1 – Wifi Issues & Possible Solutions

by Simon Ng on October 30, 2008

Quite a number of users are encountering Wifi issues after jailbreaking & upgrading to firmware 2.1. Personally, I’m really with iPhone jailbreak and do not encounter any flaws with Wifi connection at home or elsewhere. However, I admit the Wifi connection is less stable than earlier firmware release (e.g.1.1.4). Such Wifi issue may not be related to jailbreak. You can browse Apple’s discussion thread and you’ll see iPhone users complaining about the instability of Wifi connection on firmware 2.0/2.1.

So, any solution to all these Wifi issues? The answer may be ‘yes’ or ‘no’. I have checked out forums and other iPhone related websites, trying to find out the root cause of Wifi issue raised by Simon Blog’s readers. But probably there is no single solution for the problem. Wifi connection problem is not an isolated problem of iPhone. Don’t forget Wifi connection involves two parties – iPhone and Wireless router. That makes the issue even more complex. Therefore, when you try to figure out the solution to resolve Wifi issue, also take a look at your Wifi router and see if change of any router settings can solve the Wifi issues.

Okay, back to the possible solutions. Base on my experience and other solutions from forums, I sum up all possible solutions and hope it can help you get out rid of Wifi issue:

  1. Try to reset network settings on iPhone. Go to Settings -> General -> Network -> Reset -> Reset Network Settings
  2. If the above doesn’t work, perform a full erase on all settings. Go to Settings -> General -> Network -> Reset -> Erase All Content and Settings
  3. Did you try to restart your wireless router? Sometimes a reboot of the router may fix the issue
  4. Are you using WEP or WPA security on your wireless router? Try disable all security security, reboot the wireless router and reconnect your iPhone via Wifi. See if this works.
  5. Apple Support suggests to turn off MAC address filtering on your Wifi router.
  6. On the Wi-Fi Access Point/Router, you should verify if MAC address filtering is turned ON or OFF on the router, whether the security settings on the router match the iPod touch or iPhone (WEP password, WEP hex or ASCII, WPA, or WPA2), and try disabling (QoS) quality of service if that feature is turned ON for the router.

If you are still receiving the error message “Unable to Join Network Failure (error -3)” on the device when attempting to connect or join to your Wi-Fi network after trying the above suggestions, tap Settings > Wi-Fi > Other (under Choose a Network) and then enter the Wi-Fi Network Name (SSID) and select your Security setting and enter your password.

  7. Check your Wifi settings (Go to Settings -> Wi-Fi -> “>”). Did you connect to a network already? I have experienced an issue before that I can connect to my home network but fail to connect to Internet. The problem was my iPhone failed to get an IP address from wireless router. For this case, one workaround is to use static IP address instead of DHCP. At the Wifi settings screen, tap “Static” and fill in the IP address and other network settings manually. Here is a sample:
  8. IP address: <Any IP address in your local network (e.g. 10.0.1.188 or 192.168.1.13)>
Subnet mask: <Depending on your IP address range. One example is “255.255.255.0″>
    Router: <Your wireless router IP>
    DNS: <Your wireless router IP>

  9. If the above still doesn’t work for you, the last resort is to restore/jailbreak your iPhone again. This may work for some cases.
  10. Lastly, iPhone Atlas reported that it’s kind of hardware problem. Bring it back to Apple Genius Bar and get a new iPhone. But this one may only apply to those who bought iPhone from official carrier.

Did the above help you or you have other best solution that proves to resolve Wifi connection issue? Leave us comment and share your experience. That’ll be great for any iPhone user waiting for solution.

thanks very much for looking into this important issue. I have a JAU’d iphone with 2.0 firmware and I have read that 2.1 is really great. But the wifi is hugely important to me and I haven’t upgraded because of this issue.

Same problem here. Connects to wifi but the internet won’t work. My husband’s got a non-jailbroken iphone (3G, 2.1, unlocked with turbosim, just as mine) and he has no problem using wifi. Neither had I until jailbreaking (actually it seemed to work for a day or so). What is wrong here?
Don’t think manual configuring will solve the problem as the phone still won’t be able to connect to any wifi networks only to the one at home.

i also think that this wifi problem is with the baseband.
i bought iphone 3g with 2.0 firmware, and upgraded to 2.1 without any problem, and now 2.2 also without any problem. after a few weeks i installed a wallpaper pack from cydia installer and suddenly i lost wifi. there after my iphone couldnt detect any wifi point. so i cant say that this is some shit happened with the phones hardware! this may be with baseband, but i am having 2.28 baseband. now i am going to update apples original update with basebad. or beter to wait for dev boys to fix this fuck.
anyways steve job u sux, u r a son of dick, a jobless shit. so beter make sum cury with ur mom’s cum. listen!!! we will use iphone no mater wot it happens, hahaha we dont need limitations (repeat)

I did a hard reset and it fixed my inability to connect over WiFi. I had even RESTORED MY IPHONE and it still wasn’t working, so I was pretty bewildered when the support tech informed me just to hard reset the thing. That’s when you press the top button and the home button until the thing shuts off by itself. It will ask you to “slide to shut off”, but don’t do it, instead just hold those two buttons until it shuts itself off.
