WinPwn, iTunes – How to resolve Error 6, 1600, 1601, 1604

by Simon Ng on September 25, 2008

I’m really lucky. From upgrading my iPhone to 1.1.4, to 2.0 and then to firmware 2.1, I did not encounter much big issue during upgrade. Except I tried several times to put my iPhone into DFU mode, all the upgrade processes were so smooth. And, I have tried to upgrade several iPhones without any issues. From readers’ comments or email you sent to me about upgrading iPhone to firmware 2.0 with WinPwn, I know some of you are stuck at some points of the upgrade. Mostly, it’s due to Error 6, 16xx errors when restoring custom firmware in iTunes. I have tried to search solution and fix for you. And, here I try to sum up the possible causes and solutions to overcome the error. Hope this help you all complete the upgrade.

Possible Solutions for Error 6, 1600, 1601 & 1604

  1. The most possible cause of the above errors is you do not put the iPhone into DFU mode properly. You probably just put the iPhone in recovery mode. So, make sure you follow step 16 – 18 of this post to put your iPhone into DFU mode before restoring the custom firmware. As mentioned, timing is important. Our reader Gino also suggested this is the root cause of error 1604.
  2. Do you miss the step to iPwner to pwn the iTunes (Step 14 of the post)?
  3. If you’re using WinPwn 2.0.0.4 to jailbreak the firmware, you may try to not to install “Installer 4.0″. This may resolve some of the failed cases.
  4. Make sure you download the IPSW firmware file completely. This may be the issue especially experienced by Safari user. By default, Safari automatically unzip the IPSW file. To download the file correctly on Safari, you should go to “Preferences” -> “General” and uncheck “Open safe files after downloading”. Save the setting and download the IPSW file again. After download complete, change the file extension from “.ipsw.zip” to “.ipsw”.

Alternatively, you may consider to use Firefox to download the file. Natalie, one of SimonBlog’s readers, also made this suggestion.

  5. Another possible cause is you probably miss one or two steps in the upgrade procedures. Try to go over the procedures once again.
  6. Some forums also mentioned this may be the problem of iTunes. Suggested to uninstall iTunes completely and install iTunes 7.7 again. As iTunes 8.0 was released, you can find the download location of iTunes 7.7 in this post.

Lastly, if you still fail to resolve error 6 or 16xx errors with WinPwn, you can consider to use QuickPwn to perform the upgrade:

In case you find other solution to resolve the errors, remember to leave comment and share with other readers.

Hi there!
I’ve got a problem with a 2G-iPhone… Every time I try to pwn it, it fails at the last step (Unlock by BootNeuter). I really don’t know what to do! There’s no possibility to install a Original-Apple-FW, neither 1.1.4 nor 2.0 nor 2.1. Everytime I try that, iTunes (8.0 and 7.7!) gives me Errors from No. 6 to 1600…
Does anyone know a solution? Is there a possibility to transmit the BootNeuter-App to the iPhone? (There is no WiFi and no GSM connectivity!) I tried to sync it with a backup, but that just changed nothing.
The combinations I tried so far:
- Pwnage 2.1 w/ Custom FW 2.1 and iTunes 8.0 on MBP (stops unlocking procedure due to inactivity)
- Pwnage 2.1 w/ Custom FW 2.1 and iTunes 7.7 on MB (gives errors)
- Original FW 2.0 with iTunes 8.0 on MBP (errors)
- QuickPwn for Windows (Vista) with FW 2.1 (stops unlocking procedure)

I could not find any working link for Quickpwn for Mac OS…

plz help!

How to resolve Error: 1603

Vinish, which version of firmware are you upgrading to? If you are upgrading to firmware 2.1, I suggest you to refer to the complete jailbreak guide for firmware 2.1. The post will guide you through the upgrade with latest version of QuickPwn. And, this may bypass the error 1603. Let me know if it works or not.

Hi Simon,
I am downgrading back to 2.0.x because I want to resize partition back to 500mb from 2000mb as I had set before. I figure there is no need for it and I just lost 2GB for nothing. I have successfully downgraded back to 2.0 and trying to restore now with custom 2.0 to get the partition resized. I keep getting errors 1600, 1601 and now error 6 already when restore has started.

What am I doing wrong? I am back on 7.7 from 8.0 and I have used iPwner before shift restore.

Thanks.

Russell, looks complicated. I didn’t experience all 1600, 1601 and error 6 at one time before. My suggestion is

- Uninstall iTunes 7.7 completely and install iTunes 8.0 / 8.0.1 again
- Use QuickPwn 2.1 to upgrade the iPhone and jailbreak it again

You can follow this guide for the jailbreak and unlock. This guide will completely restore your iPhone to factory setting before jailbreak. I’m not sure if this works for your case. You may give it a shot and see if this helps.

Simon,

It was weird. I told myself enough is enough and went back to 2.1. I had no problem doing that before, I just wanted to get my partition resized… and guess what! After going back to 2.1, it was done! I guess while it was trying to restore it had resized the partition all along, I just didn’t know because of the errors :)

But thanks anyway!

Hey guys, i have iphone jailbreak to 1.1.4 from seller and just last nyt was trying 2 upgrade to 2.0 until on the last step where you have to restore in itune using custom build firmware, it let me down with “error 1601″ it was goin on so well through all the steps. All the steps are done, i’m just stuck on the restore stage. I’m definitely sure that my iphone is in DFU mode as i used Ziphone to do it for me. Windows as well detected my iphone in DFU mode when i plug the cable. I’m using windows vista home premium, Itune 7.7. My iphone is not working at the moment because its seems to be staying under DFU mode, its won’t get back to normal mode even if i’m using ziphone to do it. Any opinions or solution to this problem is appreciated, Thanks a lot guys.

@Liera, I suggest you use QuickPwn to jailbreak firmware 2.1. ZiPhone does not work for this version of firmware. For the complete guide of jailbreak, you can refer to this post.

@Lost, I suggest you to follow the same guide as mentioned above. Hope this works.

I have a 2g iphone.. and its stuck at the logo of the usb cord and itunes logo. I’ve tried putting it into dfu mode and restoring..i get error 1600 if i used DFU mode..and i get error 20 if i just have it as it sits.. When i was doing it before ..it would reboot and show the apple logo..and usually it shows the spinning circle, there is no spinning circle…it just freezes on teh apple logo and gives error 1600. now it won’t even reboot. Is it completely bricked? or is there a slight hope? any adivce would help alot. thank you .

HI SIMON.. i recently updated my 1.1.1 iphone 2g to 1.1.4 via your guide ! big up to the great easy steps. i am however having a problem updating to v2.0 as i follow all your steps until i restore the iphone using the custom built ipsw firmware2.0. im confident its the correct firmware as i downloaded it via the link on your website. my problem arises in that i get a message 1600 as well as the next attempt i got given a 1602 error. any ideas to remedy the situation . im curretly on itunes 7.7.0. not 7.7.1. i did use the 7.7.0 as the itunes to updat from 1.1.1 to 1.1.4. Please send me some advise so as to assist me in updating to v2.0. regards kieran

@Tony, you may follow this jailbreak guide and use QuickPwn to jailbreak your iPhone again. Make sure you download QuickPwn 2.2.5-2. Only this version works for firmware 2.2.1.

Simon,

In short: I have an iTouch 2G, i had it completely jailbroken using <a href=”http://iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=3212″?this
Recently I SSH’ed into my iTouch, and i used this method to get cracked apps on my ipod.
When I tried to reboot it, it got stuck on the apple logo.
now I’m trying to get it restored, using the most up to date iTunes possible (8.1.1, just checked it), and all i’m getting is 1604 (when hitting restore while in recovery mode), 1601 (when using ipod2,1_2.2.1_5H11a_Restore.ipsw in DFU mode), and some others when trying to restore using the same custom firmware i used when jailbreaking my iTouch

I’d really appreciate your help, and I hope you can get me a proper solution…
ps. I’m using Windows XP

Ok, nevermind, i had it returned to the apple store after it wouldn’t turn off or on (had it stuck on the boot screen)

they fixed it without noticing it was jailbroken, and now i can start over from scratch
