The wait is over. QuickPwn 2.1 for Windows is here to jailbreak iPhone firmware 2.1

by Simon Ng on September 21, 2008

A week ago, Mac user has the privilege to use QuickPwn & Pwnage tool to upgrade/jailbreak firmware 2.1. And Windows users can just sit there and wait for the next version of WinPwn or QuickPwn to tackle the firmware. Now, the wait is over. While, WinPwn’s creator is still working hard to deliver the next version, iPhone Dev Team has debuted QuickPwn 2.1 to jailbreak firmware 2.1 on Windows. Same as the previous version, QuickPwn 2.1 is expected to:

  • Jailbreak & Unlock iPhone 2G
  • Jailbreak iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 1st generation

Note: QuickPwn 2.1 does not support the unlock of iPhone 3G (Jailbreak only). Also, it will not work for the new version of iPod Touch

You can download QuickPwn 2.1 for Windows at:

http://download.s1.christophertran.net/devteam/quickpwn/2.1/QuickPwn21-1.zip
http://www.technoh.net/forums/Downloads/QuickPwn/QuickPwn21-1.zip

For firmware 2.1 download, you can refer to this post.

For upgrade procedures, you can refer to my post about “Upgrading iPhone to firmware 2.0.2 using QuickPwn“. The procedures are expected to be more or less the same. But ensure you’re using iTunes 8.0 and upgrade your iPhone to firmware 2.1 using iTunes 8.0 first.

I’ll try to wrap up the detailed procedures in later post. As always, do share with me and other readers about your upgrade experience with QuickPwn.

Update: The complete guide for jailbreak & unlock iPhone firmware 2.1 is ready, check out here.

The jailbreak worked for me, but the unlock didn’t. When I put in a T-Mobile SIM card, it says, “Different SIM card, Please Connect to iTunes”.

Trevor, you need to download Bootneuter via Cydia to unlock your 2G iPhone, even you have selected the “unlock iPhone” in QuickPwn. You can refer to step 4 & 5 of this post.

Back in July, I jail broke my 3G iPhone (2.0.1 5B108) with pwnage tool and could not be happier with the results.
I have downloaded several programs which I love. Now there is the new 2.1 firmware. How can I upgrade to the new 2.1 without losing everything I have already downloaded or installed? I understand that letting Apple install the new firmware will erase my version. Please help!!!
Thanks in advance,
Fernando

Hi! I followed your guide, upgraded from 1.1.4 to 2.0.1 and it worked beautifully. My problem is one of the essential apps in Appstore requires 2.1 in order to work. How reliable have you found the QuickPwn 2.1? Do you advise trying it right away or waiting for the new WinPwn? Thanks for everything Simon! Love your blog!

Frans, QuickPwn 2.1 is great. Quite a number of readers have already upgraded to firmware 2.1 without any issues. As always, backup your iPhone data (via iTunes) before the upgrade.

Fernando, for application download from AppStore, you can just sync it with iTunes. iTunes will back up all your applications to your computer.

However, for application download via Cydia, you need to install AptBackup first. AptBackup can be found in Cydia. Install and launch it. Click the “Backup” button to backup the application. Then sync it again with iTunes. This will back up all the applications installed via Cydia to your computer.

Next, after upgrade to firmware 2.1, resync your iPhone with iTunes. All your AppStore applications should be restored. But, for those Cydia applications, you need to install and launch AptBackup. Then, lick “Restore” to restore it.

Hi Simon, thanks very much for your prompt reply. I will try your tip right away but just to make sure: Since my iPhone is already jail-broken I don’t need to use Pwned or QuickPwn 2.1, right? If I do, what would be the procedure so I don’t lose my old Cydia downloaded programs?
Thanks again,
Fernando

Even you own a jailbreak iPhone, after upgrade to iPhone firmware 2.1, you’ll have to jailbreak it again using QuickPwn 2.1.

As mentioned in my earlier comment, you can use AptBackup (you can find it in Cydia) to backup your application first. And restore them back after upgrade. Good luck!

Hi Simon,
I have a 1G (I think – I don’t really know, it is an older model having metal back) iPhone having firmware 1.1.4 It was unlocked by ziphone quite some time ago.
Can I upgrade it to 2.1 in one single step? If yes are there any special steps I have to take, or just upgrade the firmware by iTunes and follow your instructions to unlock it?
Do I have to relock it (if I’m right there is this option in ziphone) before upgrade?
Sorry I’m not very familiar with this unlocking stuff.
Thanks a lot in advance!
Peter

Peter, you do not need to relock your iPhone for upgrade. You can just follow the procedures described in this post to upgrade directly to firmware 2.1 using QuickPwn 2.1. Let me know if you encounter any issues. Good luck!

Question, in the instructions that you referred to in the 2.0.2 upgrade it says you need to download the 2.0.2 firmware and place it in the folder that you unzipped the quickpwn program to. I see on the 2.0.2 page where to download the firmware but I don’t see on this page where I can download the firmware. I only see the link that will let me download the actual program. Sorry to bother you I just am a little confused. Thanks so much for the help, you are the bomb.

Actually you can download the firmware 2.1 via iTunes. This is the latest firmware version. But if you want to download it manually, you can refer to this post about firmware download.

Hi Simon, I’ve just finished upgrading from 1.1.4 to 2.1 according to your instructions and it worked just fine. Thanks for your help!
The only thing I would emphasize for future 2G upgraders is that Wi-Fi is really needed as there is no edge on a locked phone. Yes yes, it is obvious, and yes yes it is in your post, I just overlooked it. Fortunately my friend having Wi-Fi was still awake at midnight :)

One more question: After the unlocking procedure I restored all my data with iTunes. Everything has been restored perfectly, only my songs are missing. They are on the phone, I can see them in iTunes, but iPod says “No Content”. Is there any way to make them visible again without re-uploading them?

To the firmware question: I told iTunes to download the firmware and this way I did not even had to put it in the QuickPwn folder. Either QuickPwn found it in the default download location, or it did not need it at all. I don’t know exactly, but it was not in the QuickPwn folder and the process still worked.

I downloaded QuickPwn 2.1 and iPhone fw 2.1. After I browse the firmware the process is stuck. Status progress bar at the bottom shows three bars and the arrow to move forward is disabled. It was as it is from 20 odd minutes. Does take this long generally or something is wrong?

Thanks,
AJ

I also got stuck at the same state. seems like Quickpwn does not recognize the firmware file.

As and when I selected my 2.1 version file I see some progress on the left side of path text box but it stops there. The arrow on the right bottum is disabled. So, no way to proceed further. May be something wrong either on device or approach.

One point to note is I am closing iTunes before I updrade (Though this point was not mentioned in the steps). But I feel it should not matter.

Any inputs Simon?

It also shows a message below the firmware location textbox, ‘The correct ipsw will have a name beginning with iphone1.1_2.0′ but the firmware 2.1 ipsw’s name is iphone iPhone1,1_2.1_5F136_Restore.ipsw.

Just wanted to help this info if it helps to triage the issue.

Thanks,
AJ

May be I need to upgrade to 2.0.2 first and then 2.1. Simon, is it like that?
Also, I have itunes 8.0 Is it fine to upgrade to 2.0.2 using quickpwn and itunes 8.0?

Reply

27 AJ October 6, 2008 at 5:35 pm

Simon,

I thought I should first upgrade to 2.0.2 and then giving a shot to 2.1 upgrade. If in case thats the workaround. Below is what happened when I tried to upgrade to 2.0.2 using QwkPwn 2.1.

If I try to upgrade to 2.0.2 using QuickPwn 2.1:

1) launch QwkPwn 2.1
2) Browse fw 2.0.2. The next step arrow button is activated (which kept disable when I was selecting firmware 2.1)
3) It asks me four options a) cydia b) installer c) boot logo d) Unlock iPhone
4) Now I am a bit confused whether to select unlock or not. Coz you mentioned to unlock using bootneuter after the upgrade. But I gave it a shot and selected a,b and d and click next
5) Here i am stuck. It asks me for bootneuter files 3.9 and 4.6 which I dont have so I close the quickpwn and terminate the process and still have to live with fw 2.0.

Sorry for bothering you with all these queries but I am getting anxious to upgrade to 2.1 as it fixes a tons of bugs specially the performance ones.

Please let me know if you could find a way to upgrade to 2.1 from 2.0?

Thanks,
AJ

AJ, thanks for your comment. You can check “unlock iPhone” option. This won’t harm even you have unlock it before. For bootneuter file, you find in this post or you can download it here:

Bootloader 3.9
Bootloader 4.6

You can directly upgrade to iPhone from 2.0 to 2.1. Some readers have already done that with QuickPwn. Let me know if this works for you.

Subbu, are you download the correct IPSW file? As AJ mentioned, you should download the firmware file for 2.1. You can try to download again and see if it works. The firmware 2.1 IPSW file can be download here.

Simon,

Thanks for the response on the previous comment.

I downloaded the file from the post you mentioned in the previous comment. Name of the file is iPhone1,1_2.1_5F136_Restore.ipsw. Please let us know if it was the same for you when you upgrade your fon to 2.1.

Subbu and I are facing same issue, the process is stuck after we browse this firmware file. The text below the location text box says ‘The correct ipsw will have a name beginning with iphone1.1_2.0′, but the firmware I downloaded from the post you mentioned begins with iPhone1,1_2.1_5F136_Restore.ipsw. Do you think this is the reason why the upgrade is stuck? If yes, which is the correct firmware file?

Reply

31 Subbu October 7, 2008 at 4:18 am

Thanks for the update AJ. You are right we both are facing same issue.

Simon,
What ever AJ mentioned in his response is correct. I downloaded the correct firmware and QuickPwn does not recognize this file as firmware file.

The text below the location text box says ‘The correct ipsw will have a name beginning with iphone1.1_2.0′, but the firmware I downloaded from the post you mentioned begins with iPhone1,1_2.1_5F136_Restore.ipsw.

Simon,

I guess I got the issue Subbu and I are facing with this upgrade. You mentioned in this post ‘ut ensure you’re using iTunes 8.0 and upgrade your iPhone to firmware 2.1 using iTunes 8.0 first.’

I did not upgrade my iPhone to 2.1 from iTunes 8 before launching QuickPwn2.1

I mean
1) Connecting iPhone and open iTunes 8.0 and go to my device
2) Hold shift key and click Restore
3) Opens a popup window, browse 2.1 ipsw
4) Now follow the steps you have mentioned in your post

I guess if I do this the upgrade would go fine. Just wanted to hear from you before moving ahead. Please share your opinion. Other users who did their upgrade with this method please do share your experience.

Many thanks,
AJ

Hi-
Almost a year and a half ago I unlocked my iphone. Now I am running 1.1.3.
How do I upgrade the firmware on my iphone?
What else should I install? Cydia perhaps?

Thank you very much for your attention.

@George,

Now you can upgrade to firmware 2.2 by following this jailbreak guide. Once you’re on firmware 2.2, you can download free and paid apps from Cydia and App Store. It’ll be great.

@kkkk, after jailbreak you can use Clippy to perform cut, copy & paste. But if you’re worried about the risk of jailbreaking, you may wait for the official release of iPhone 3.0, which comes with native support of copy & paste.
