Breaking News: iPhone Dev Team releases QuickPwn & Pwnage Tool to jailbreak firmware 2.1

by Simon Ng on September 14, 2008

A day after Apple’s release of firmware 2.1, iPhone Dev Team manages to release a new version of QuickPwn and Pwnage Tool to jailbreak and unlock this latest version of firmware. For now, both tools are available for Mac only. And, claimed by the iPhone Dev team, the solution also works for iTunes 8.0. I haven’t tested out the tool yet (I prefer to wait for a day or two to ensure the tool is stable). If you can’t wait for the upgrade, you can download both tools at:

Pwnage Tool 2.1

QuickPwn 1.1
http://69.73.148.215/~evasive/downloads/QuickPwn_1.1.dmg

The upgrade procedures should be very similar to my previous post about Pwnage Tool. Anyways, I’ll keep update about the status of firmware 2.1 upgrade and of course, with a step-by-step upgrade guide.

Update: I have posted a complete guide to upgrade iPhone to firmware 2.1 using Pwnage Tool. Check out the complete guide here.

Vyom, though I cannot test the tools on firmware 1.1.4, I believe you can upgrade directly to 2.1.

AJ, WinPwn 3.0 is expected to jailbreak firmware 2.1 on Windows. But you have to wait a little bit. Will keep you and other readers update once the solution is available.

HEY anyone knows whats going on? ON 2.1 firmware, my numbers arent recognized, meaning when I have incoming calls, only the number appears but not the name (meaning I have the number in my contact list) but does not recognize them. Any solutions to this? I already installed callerID fix from installer, and another one from cydia but none of those work.. Its frustrating

Hey how can I downgrade to 2.0? Do I just install the custom firmware I had from pwnage tool of 2.1? I figured, 2.1 has much bugs, including the number that arent recognized, as I mentioned before.

Hi Simon,

I have an unlocked iPhone 3G running 2.0.1 and if I understand correctly, I can update to 2.1 using QuickPwn? Or will it then be locked again?

Chris, I believe your iPhone is a jailbreak one instead of unlock (currently only iPhone sold in HK is unlocked). For jailbreak, it means your iPhone can install 3rd party application via Cydia or Installer. Both Pwnage tool and QuickPwn also support to jailbreak iPhone 3G. You can follow the procedures mentioned in this post. But remember select iPhone 3G (instead of 2G) during upgrade.

Dear simon

Do you provide the service to do the upgrade … from 1.1.4 to 2.1? I have 2 units. I do not have the time to figure out all the upgrade jargon.

Daniel, I don’t offer upgrade service. QuickPwn is quite easy to use. I suggest to give it a shot. Quite a number of readers, who are not geeks, can upgrade the firmware successfully.

Robert, I’m not using T-mobile. You may call up T-mobile support to check the APN settings.
