iPhone firmware 2.1 is now out… With more fix bugs & genius feature

by Simon Ng on September 13, 2008

Get ready for iPhone firmware 2.1 upgrade! Apple has just released iPhone firmware 2.1. And, this time, unlike v2.0.1 or 2.0.2, Apple details the improvements & enhancements of the firmware, which include:

  • Reduce drop call & call-setup failure (I think this one is much about iPhone 3G)
  • Significantly improve battery life
  • Greatly reduce the time for backup to iTunes
  • Faster installation of 3rd party applications from AppStore
  • Fixed bugs that causes crash and application hangs
  • Performance improvement in SMS
  • Improvement performance for loading Contacts
  • Improved accuracy of the 3G signal strength display
  • Repeat alert up to two additional times for incoming text messages
  • Option to wipe data after ten failed passcode attempts
  • Improved email reliability, especially for fetching email from POP & Exchange
  • New Genius feature as introduced in iTunes 8.0

For user using unlock iPhone, please don’t upgrade to firmware 2.1. The unlock tools (e.g. WinPwn, Pwnage Tool or QuickPwn) are not well-tested on this version of firmware yet. For now, stay for firmware 2.0.x for a while. I’ll keep you update if it’s ready to upgrade.

Update: You can now use QuickPwn 2.1 for Windows and QuickPwn 1.1 for Mac to jailbreak & unlock firmware 2.1. Don’t forget to check them out.

Humayun, did you try to power off the iPhone and start it again? I heard from another reader who experienced the same issue. And a restart did resolve the problem.
