Upgrade iPhone to 2.0.2 using QuickPwn

by Simon Ng on August 23, 2008

iPhone Dev Team released QuickPwn yesterday to tackle firmware 2.0.2. You can now use QuickPwn to QuickPwn to upgrade iPhone to firmware 2.0.2. QuickPwn is actually a new tool to jailbreak iPhone running firmware 2.0.1/2.0.2 but it’s much easier and convenient for jailbreak iPhone running the latest firmware.

As pointed out by iPhone Dev team, QuickPwn does not require you to create a custom IPSW and perform a complete iTunes restore. It takes less steps to jailbreak your iPhone, compared with that when using WinPwn. And, here is the excerpt from iPhone Dev Team Blog about QuickPwn,

Using QuickPwn does not update the firmware itself, this tool is designed to ‘Pwn’ (the ability to install future custom non-Apple firmwares) , ‘Jailbreak’ and install Installer or Cydia on a given device. If your device is running 2.0.1 and you QuickPwn it, it’ll still be running 2.0.1, although it will now be Pwned and Jailbroken, similarly if your device is running 2.0.2 and you QuickPwn it, it will then be running 2.0.2 but the device will now be Pwned and Jailbroken. It will also activate (not unlock) devices that are being used outside of their intended territories and cannot be activated using iTunes.

If you want to update to 2.0.2 then use the normal iTunes update to get to 2.0.2 and then use QuickPwn to Pwn, Jailbreak and Activate, remember that the 2.0.2 update includes a baseband update for the 3G iPhone, so depending what your long term intentions are for the phone, update wisely, of course in the upcoming PwnageTool application you’ll be able to create a custom ipsw without the baseband update enabled.

You can download QuickPwn here if you want to upgrade to firmware 2.0.2 (or you accidentally upgrade it). For now, however, QuickPwn is available for Windows user only. But you should expect the Mac version will be released soon.

The jailbreak process is very straightforward, compared with the procedures in WinPwn. But please note that the tool assumes you have an iPhone running firmware 2.0.1/2.0.2. That means if you’re going to upgrade to firmware 2.0.2, you should first upgrade the iPhone firmware through iTunes. And then you jailbreak it through QuickPwn.

To jailbreak using QuickPwn,

1. Download QuickPwn and firmware 2.0.2 (2G/3G). Then extract QuickPwn and put the firmware file in the same folder of QuickPwn.

2. Connect your iPhone to the dock/USB and launch “QuickPwnGui120″ and select 2G/3G iPhone.

3. Follow the instruction to locate your firmware (i.e. IPSW file) and select options to install Cydia & Installer. And, kick off the jailbreak process. Wait for the process to complete and your iPhone is jailbreaked.

4. For 2G iPhone, your iPhone may still be locked at the stage. Enable Wifi and launch Cydia. Download and install Bootneuter (under “Utilities” section).

5. (For 2G iPhone) Launch Bootneuter. Make sure “Unlock” and “Neuter” are enabled. Click “Flash” to unlock the iPhone!

Update: You can now use QuickPwn to upgrade & unlock firmware 2.1. Firmware 2.1 for iPhone is much stable than 2.0.x version, check out the complete guide for jailbreak firmware 2.1 here.

What version of iPhone firmware are you using?

Will this work on a 1.1.4 too ?

Reply

2 Simon Ng August 28, 2008 at 12:19 am

Smash, QuickPwn does not support 1.1.4. QuickPwn is different other jailbreak tool like WinPwn & Pwnage Tool. It expects you to upgrade iPhone to 2.0.2 via iTunes. Then you run QuickPwn to directly jailbreak it.

i got this going and just about everything on it works beautfiully. i (finally) upgraded from my old Sidekick 2 to the iphone 2G last week, Winpwn’d it, upgraded to 2.0.1 and have been enjoying it ever since.

only issue i am having is that for some reason i cannot connect to the tmobile data network. i get wifi, i get phone and sms, all that stuff. but i cannot access the tmobile data network that i had with my sidekick 2.

anyone have a quick setup guide or words of advice to get this working?

4 Simon Ng August 29, 2008 at 12:15 am

Eggshen, I guess you need to configure the network setting in iPhone to access the data network (after upgrade, this setting is blank by default). You can find the setting by tapping Settings -> General -> Network -> Cellular Data Network. And you type in the correct “APN” for tmobile. You may call up tmobile support about what APN you should use.

Hi Simon! I have accidentally upgraded my unlocked iphone from 1.1.4 to 2.0.1. Now this phone is totally locked again. I downloaded Quickpwn but I get a message that “The compressed (zipped) folder is invalid or corrupted”. Can you kindly help to unlock my phone?

Vetcha, can you try to download the QuickPwn and extract the zipped file again?

Hi Simon! Thanks. Now I can extract the zipped file. But when I try to run this it says “to run this application, you must install one of the following versions of .net framework v2.0.50727. Contact your application publisher for information about obtaining appropriate version of the .net framework”. Can you kindly let me know where can I get the above .net framework? Thanks in advance.

Simon,

I bought a used iphone 2G 2.0.2 (locked) phone from one of my friend and I used quickpwn to jailbreak and unlock the phone. I followed steps as in link – “http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080827071232AAH2zk7&r=w&show_comments=true&pa=FZB6NWHjDG3N56z6v_2wXDYS2SdQt4cUbsqK4YCr.KJ5g_USv9oC3g–&paid=add_comment#openions”.

However, when I insert my SIM I get a message “Different SIM detected” Please connect to iTunes. I can received SMS/calls from India but cannot make any outgoing calls or send messages. I get a screen only to make emergency calls.

My SIM is from India (Airtel) and I am currently roaming in the US and Airtel has signed up with AT&T as their roaming carrier.

Pls help. What do I do to use my phone in the US and India as well. Does this mean that my phone is now only jailbroken but is not yet unlocked yet?

Thanks and regards,
Giri

I have had the same experience as several other people here where after QuickPwn’ing my upgraded iPhone, installing and executing BootNeuter with Cydia. I get the “Different SIM detected/Please connect to iTunes” message (and of course, iTunes will object to the SIM). Note that the iPhone does detect the carrier and I can call to the iPhone. I can also make calls using the ‘emergency’ slider and dialling the full number, but I just can’t use the home button to get to the buttons without ‘popping’ the SIM. Do you have any suggestions? BTW, I upgraded to 2.1.

I have an Iphone 3G running 2.0.1 and if I understand correctly, I can update to 2.1 using QuickPwn? And if it doesn’t work, is there any way to restore it back to 2.0.1?

Hey Simon,

1) I have fw 2.0 on my iPhone. Can I upgrade to 2.1 using steps mentioned above OR first I need to upgrade to 2.0.2 and then 2.1
2) Link you have mention for downloading quickpawn 2.1 is not working. Please suggest some other source

I’ve found a solution to the “Different SIM detected/Please connect to iTunes” problem that has worked for me. See:

http://www.modmyi.com/forums/unlocking-activation/349741-different-sim-detected-error-after-quickpwn-2-1-unlock-2-0-2-a.html

I just need to fix up some “localisation” things now! :-)

Simon,
Is an At&T sim card required for this process?

Reply

37 Simon Ng October 7, 2008 at 8:49 pm

iclim4, QuickPwn is used to jailbreak and unlock iPhone. So with unlock, you are no longer bind to AT&T, that means you can use SIM card from other carriers. For further information about jailbreak, you can refer to this post.

38 iclim4 October 7, 2008 at 10:10 pm

Simon,
I meant the jailbreaking/unlocking process, not after the unlocking itself.
Cause I plan on unlocking an Iphone but I don’t have an AT&T sim card.
Though I did find the apps you posted very interesting.

39 Simon Ng October 7, 2008 at 11:20 pm

iclim4,

No, you don’t need to have AT&T sim card to use QuickPwn.

Simon,

I’m looking for some clarification regarding updating a jailbreak 1st gen iphone currently on 1.1.2. and wanting to upgrade to 2.2. It’s my understanding that I fully restore the iphone to factory settings (which in my case would be 1.1.1 or thereabouts) and then through itunes upgrade to 2.2, then use quickPwn to jailbreak to 2.2. Can you confirm this?

2.1
2.0.2
2.0.1

And have tried Jailbreaking/unlocking each individually.
Each jailbreak works perfectly, exept my Orange PAYG Sim card gets ‘No Service’

I have tried BootNeuter and that just takes away the ‘No Service’ but I never get a signal and it wont stop ‘Searching’ for a carrier in the settings menu.

Please help me unlock my phone :)
