Type Chinese on iPhone using NativeCN

by Simon Ng on March 24, 2008

Apple may still be in talk with China mobile to bring iPhone to China and Hong Kong (People as official carrier?). Developers from Hong Kong are not settled with the schedule and already created their own solution – NativeCN to support Chinese input on iPhone after firmware 1.1.1 released. Initially, I was not able to test out the solution as my iPhone came with firmware 1.0.2. Now after the upgrade, I can report that it’s really great that I can type Chinese in nearly any applications in iPhone. The installation of NativeCN is very straightforward. As long as you own a Jailbreak iPhone with firmware 1.1.1 or above, you can download it via Installer. And, here is a comprehensive procedures that guide you through the installation.

1. Launch “Installer”

2. Add the source “http://www.iphone.org.hk/repository.plist” in Installer

3. You should then find “NativeCN” in the Utility category. Go and install it.

4. Go back to home screen and launcher NativeCN. Select your preferred input method and follow the instruction to reboot the iPhone.

5. After restart, go to “Settings” and click “General” -> “International” -> “Keyboards”. Ensure you have at least two keyboards selected. For me, I chose Japanese keyboard.

Oh, it’s done! Your iPhone will be ready for typing Chinese in Safari, Notes, Emails and SMS.

why we must enable “japanese” in “international keyboard”? Can’t you creat “Chinese” instead? By the way, Chinese is the mother of Japanese, you guys must be clear of that! What we want is type “Chinese” in iphone. Chinese! Chinese!

Hi, I followed the steps here, but why is NativeCN not showing in Utilities after sources refreshed? I even looked for it under “All packages”, but just couldn’t see “NativeCN” in the list. Please advice. Thx.

It should be under “Utilities” category. Did you install it previously (you may check it under “Uninstall”)?

umm…..
with the 2.1 release, international keyboards and languages should be standard…i just changed my iphone language settings to traditional chinese and added the keyboard (which allows you to draw characters…pretty cool).
