Upgrade unlocked iPhone from 1.0.2 / 1.1.1 to 1.1.4

by Simon Ng on March 22, 2008

I bought my iPhone (with firmware 1.0.2) last October and since then, I am so happy with all features it comes with, except the pathetic SMS application. Hey, it’s 2007 when iPhone is released to public. How come such a slick & technologically advanced phone does not support SMS to multiple recipients? It’s so a basic feature that every phone should come with. I recalled once I had to send a SMS message to 10 colleagues, at that time, I really missed my old Nokia phone. (Of course, later I know iSMS provides this feature to complement the native SMS application.)

Two months earlier, this simple feature finally arrived with iPhone firmware 1.1.3 release, followed with the latest 1.1.4 release (mainly bug fixes). Macworld’s coverage about this upgrade is very comprehensive and I really love this update. Followed by Apple’s update, ZiPhone has published a jailbreak solution for firmware 1.1.3/1.1.4 just a month ago. The unlock solution has never been so straightforward and fast (just 2-3 minutes), that a novice can handle with no difficulty. Kudo to ZiPhone’s author!

I could not guarantee the upgrade from firmware 1.0.2 / 1.1.1 to 1.1.4 is completely safe using ZiPhone. I, however, have performed upgrade on three iPhones (one with firmware 1.1.1 and two with 1.0.2) without any issues. One more point to note is that ZiPhone also works with those phones unlocked previously using iPhoneSimFree.

iPhone firmware 1.1.4

Okay, here are the procedures I used to upgrade the firmware and unlock it using ZiPhone…

1. Please use iTunes 7.5 or 7.6 and synchronize your iPhone before performing the upgrade.

Update: You may use iTunes 7.7 and ZiPhone 3.0 for the upgrade. Thanks Jay for advising us.

2. Download iPhone firmware 1.1.4

3. Recover your iPhone with firmware 1.1.4

Connect your iPhone and start iTunes. Select your iPhone in iTunes and start to recover by pressing SHIFT and click “Restore” (for Windows) or pressing OPTION and click “Restore” (for Mac) to select the 1.1.4 firmware file. iTunes should start load the firmware to your iPhone. It’ll take around 4-5 minutes and your iPhone will be rebooted when the process completes. Now, your iPhone is firmware 1.1.4 ready (but still locked!). Don’t disconnect your iPhone and keep your iTunes open! You have two more steps to free your iPhone from AT&T.

4. Download ZiPhone 2.6b and extract it.

5. Unlock your iPhone with ZiPhone

This is the final step to unlock your iPhone. Launch ZiPhone 2.6b that you just extracted. Select “Do it all” and click “Start Process”.

ZiPhone 2.6b

Just wait and keep your iPhone connected. You’ll see your iPhone is brought to a black screen with full of log messages. Don’t panic, it’s normal and should be finished in several minutes. After the whole process completes, ZiPhone will reboot your iPhone into normal startup screen. Now, sync back your backup data and enjoy all the new features.

Update #1: Pwnage tool is ready to jailbreak the iPhone firmware 2.0. You can consider to upgrade & jailbreak your unlocked iPhone to 2.0 (for Mac Only).

Update #2: For Windows user, you can now use WinPwn to jailbreak the iPhone firmware 2.0. You can consider to upgrade & jailbreak your unlocked iPhone from 1.1.4 to 2.0.

Thanks

Matt, the “Installer” should already been installed by ZiPhone.

Gravier,I have upgraded five iPhones using the procedures I described in my post and got no problems till now. My iPhone did hang once when receiving SMS but the problem was solved after reset. For Wifi, I also did not encounter any problem. I can connect to the web using Safari, check email, as well as viewing video via YouTube. So I think it’s pretty safe for the upgrade. Good luck and enjoy all the new features come up 1.1.4.

Hi

I was following your method, but holding option (mac) and clicking restore just gave me the option to check for updates and backup – then restore to factory settings and update to the newest version of the iphone software. eg: Restore and update, but through itunes.

There was no option to use the 1.1.4 restore download which you mentioned

Am I still safe to follow the process but choosing update within itunes and downloading 1.1.4 through itunes (i’m in the UK)?

Don’t want to mess up from the start.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

A couple of questions
> is the process of upgrade from already unlocked 1.0.2 to 1.1.4. I am asking this since i have been reading a lot of websites and there is this word “Virginize” used before upgrading the firmware.
> I dont know how i had unlocked my iphone. I have an installer which doesnt open up. It says “Checking sources” –> “Refreshing sources” and just gets back on the home screen.
> once i download the firmware.. where do i save it for itunes to pick it up from.

My 1.0.2 crashed and i’ve been trying to recover it using your instructions in “Recover your unlocked iPhone” page. Sadly it didn’t work, for some odd reason it stops in the middle of everything. Anyhow, I’d like to ask if this procedure here can be done straight to a crashed 1.0.2 or should I recover it from it’s current state?

Upgraded from 1.0.2 to 2.0 (my mistake) then I downgraded from 2.0 to 1.1.4
First used iLiberty+ the phone in the Iphone did not work
Then since have already upgraded to 1.1.4 used ziphone to unlock again the phone (no service)
During the process I let the Tmobile sim card stay in the

Is there anything I can do to recover my phone service?

Popson, yes you can upgrade your iPhone to 2.0.1 using either WinPwn or Pwnage Tool. But before you can upgrade to 2.0.1, you need to upgrade to 1.1.4 first. So, here is what you need to do:

1. Upgrade iPhone from 1.0.2 to 1.1.4
2. Then upgrade iPhone from 1.1.4 to 2.0. You can find the upgrade procedure for Windows here. And if you’re using Mac, you can refer to this post.

Also, if you consider to upgrade to 2.0.1, please also refer to this post.

Ryan, you have to give up those applications. There is no way to keep the application after the upgrade. But think about the new features you’ll have for the newer firmware, it’s worth the upgrade.

Many thanks for this. I have upgraded my unlocked 1.0.2 from September/October last year to 1.1.4 using ZiPhone 3.0 and iTunes 7.7.1 running on Windows Server 2003. As others have said, I kept my non-AT&T in there….. Yes, it was as scary as hell. I’m stunned that a simple restore to 1.1.4 didnt brick the phone, and then ZiPhone finished the job nicely. I had sync’ed/backed it up in iTunes on my MacBook Pro, then followed your simple instructions using a the Windows Server machine I have.

Preeti, I’m not sure why ZiPhone doesn’t work on your iPhone. But as long as your iPhone is still alive, there is a way to recover it. If you don’t mind using firmware 2.0, I suggest to upgrade to this version that will also recover your iPhone. You can refer to Upgrade iPhone to 2.0.2 using QuickPwn for procedures.

Sounds silly but icant select the 1.1.4 firmware. After I press option and restore a search opens but the files in the folder are un-selectable. Sorry for question. cheers.

Robert, you should locate the .ipsw firmware file. Only file with “.ipsw” extension can be selected.

Hisham32, for 1603 error during iTunes restore, you may refer to Apple’s support page about the error.

Hi Simon, if I update my iPhone, can it be downgraded to 1.1.4?

Reply

96 Simon Ng September 12, 2008 at 11:41 pm

Hisham32, do you mean downgrade to v1.0.2? Seems you’re currently using firmware 1.0.2. And, after upgrade to firmware 1.1.4, as I know, there is no way downgrade it back.

Hey there, was wondering if I could use 3.0 and iTunes 7.5 to upgrade my iPhone.
Also, previously I had tried to get my iPhone out of your recovery mode, it didn’t seem to work, though ziphone did the trick.

Ria, I think it’ll work. But to play safe, you better upgrade iTunes to 7.7 and pair with ZiPhone 3.0 for the upgrade.

Simon,
I am like Robert. I cannot select the firmware file. First I extracted the file and it didn’t work. Then I downloaded the file again and remove the .zip from the file name. Now the file ends with .ipsw, but I cannot select it. What is it I am doing wrong? Thanks

Saad, the IPSW is not zipped. Can you please try to download the firmware 1.1.4 file again?

Reply

101 Saad September 23, 2008 at 7:25 pm

Simon, I downloaded the file again. Here is what I got “iphone1,1_1.1.4_4a102_restore.ipsw.zip.download” this is the file when I cancel the decompressing process of the file and I can’t select anything when I try to restore. When I decompress the file this I get a folder with this name “iphone1,1_1″ and the folder has a sub-folder “Firmware” but no file in any of these folders can be selected for the restore process.
I highly appreciate your help.

Saad, that’s strange. The file is not zipped. Can you just rename the file to “iphone1,1_1.1.4_4a102_restore.ipsw” and give it a shot? BTW, what browser are you using?

103 Simon Ng September 25, 2008 at 1:48 am

Saad, I gussed you’re using Safari. You may refer to point 4 of this post for resolution. You need to configure a setting in Safari, so that you can download the IPSW file correctly.

Simon, I didn’t see your last comment until now. But when you asked me what browser I am using, I realized maybe it’s the problem. So I try Firefox and downloaded the file and it worked! I upgraded my iphone to 1.1.4 and then to 2.0 following your steps described in the other post. I have had this phone since 1 year and never upgraded but I must say “SIMON, YOU ROCK!” Thanks very much and keep us updated about how to upgrade from 2.0. BTW now after upgrading the iphone, can I upgrade my itunes to 8.0? I downgraded it to 7.7 but I am getting a lot of error messages and couldn’t even restore the data on my iphone!

Hi Simon,
When i connected my iphone to itunes and did a restore using step 3 an error occured. “the iphone could not be restored. An unknown error occured(20).” Any idea how to deal with this error? HELP please. Thank you very much.

I didn’t experience the error before. But for now, you can find other solutions to recover your iPhone. I suggest you to use later firmware version (say, 2.0 or 2.1) to restore your iPhone. You can find the procedures in this post.

Van, definitely. You can use ZiPhone to fix your problem. Just follow the procedures and make sure you’re using iTunes 7.7 or lower.

Hi Simon,
I have a 1.0.2 phone that I bought unlocked on the trip back in June 2007 and want to upgrade it to 1.1.4. and further to 2.2.1. I am guessing that it was unlocked and jailbroken with Dev Team application. Will ZiPhone upgrade from 1.0.2 to 1.1.4 work in my case? I read that phones that were unlocked earlier had to be virginalized first. Do not know what that actually means.

Also, oo I have to keep SIM card in during the upgrade or take it out, and when do I put it back in?

Thanks

@Valentin,

That’s fine to upgrade from 1.0.2 to firmware 2.2. directly. But I suggest you to follow this jailbreak guide and use QuickPwn for the upgrade. I suggest you to ignore the download of the newest version of firmware and follow the guide to download it manually.
